Vatican Makes Money Laundering List Of U.S. State Department

Vatican Money Laundering

VATICAN CITY, March 8 (Reuters) - The Vatican has for the first time appeared on the U.S. State Department's list of money-laundering centres but the tiny city-state is not rated as a high-risk country.

The 2012 International Narcotics Control Strategy Report was made public on Wednesday and Washington's list of 190 countries classifies them in three categories: of primary concern, of concern and monitored.

The Vatican is in the second category, grouped with 67 other nations including Poland, Egypt, Ireland, Hungary and Chile.

It was added to the list because it was considered vulnerable to money-laundering and had recently established programmes to prevent it, a State Department official said.

"To be considered a jurisdiction of concern merely indicates that there is a vulnerability to a financial system by money launderers. With the large volumes of international currency that goes through the Holy See, it is a system that makes it vulnerable as a potential money-laundering center," Susan Pittman of the State Department's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, told Reuters.

Last year, the Vatican adapted internal laws to comply with international standards on financial crime.

The Vatican is seeking inclusion on the European Commission's so-called "white list" of states who comply with international standards against tax fraud and money-laundering. A decision on its inclusion is expected in June.

"Our aim is to make the 'white list' and we are happy that we have been put in the State Department's less vulnerable category," a Vatican official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The category of most vulnerable centres includes all members of the Group of Eight countries, including the United States, Germany, Italy and Russia, because the size of their economies and banking systems can facilitate money-laundering. It also includes small centres such as Britain's Channel Islands.

The State Department's methodology is different from that of the Financial Action Task Force's International Cooperation Review Group (ICRG), which concentrates on a nation's compliance with international law and money-laundering regulations.

VATICAN BANK HAS SCANDALOUS PAST

The Vatican Bank, founded in 1942 by Pope Pius XII, has been in the spotlight since September 2010 when Italian investigators froze 23 million euros ($33 million) in funds in Italian banks after opening an investigation into possible money-laundering.

The bank said it did nothing wrong and was just transferring funds between its own accounts. The money was released in June 2011 but the investigation is continuing.

The Vatican's new financial transparency laws set up internal regulations to make sure its bank and all other departments adhere to international regulations and standards, and cooperate with foreign authorities.

Two months ago, Italian newspapers published leaked internal letters which appeared to show a conflict among top Vatican officials about just how transparent the bank should be about dealings that took place before it enacted its new laws.

The Vatican Bank was formally known as the Institute for Works of Religion (IOR) and was entangled in the collapse 30 years ago of Banco Ambrosiano, with its lurid allegations about money-laundering, freemasons, mafiosi and the mysterious death of Ambrosiano chairman Roberto Calvi - "God's banker". The teenee weenee Vatican is not so teenee.
The Vatican has over 100 ambasadors to the U.N.

They also control the worlds biggest banks, including the bank that is destroying America. The Federal Reserve. President G. W. Bush said to the pope, " we need to bring his teachings ( the popes) here to America, and implement them here. There goes seperation of church and state.

Now we know what we have to look forward to.
The vatican controls a lot of buying and selling. Rev.13;17 That no one could buy or sell, except he that has the mark of the beast. ( a beast in bible prophecy is a government or kingdom Dan 7; 17, 23 ) Is this one of the big deceptions that Rev. 12;9 warns the world about ?

If the whole world is deceived, then are we then safe to follow the majority ?
Stay tuned. This is the end of the worlds history.

Considering that the US and other developed countries are listed as most vulnerable, your headline and the emphasis on the Vatican bank smacks of religious bigotry.

Consider that the CC receives millions in donations and other scams and does not have to report; that leaves the door wide open for money laundering and fiscal malfeasance.

It seems easy for all to call the Churches and Synagogues, watchable and accountable for wrong doings. It seems the ones doing the watching are worse than the ones being watched.
It's only the people in charge at the time that make the decisions....
God has a way of cleaning house, with time.both the Churches and Governments were based on "Good for all". For hard work and achievements, we reward ourselves and others. The freedom to choose what, when, where, and why. What do we have now. Machine Guns to Mexico and questions of Solar & Green Energy Fraud loans. Investor paid back before the Government.
Who should be on a watch list as well?.

Friday's New York Times had a full page blab ,"An Open Letter " to Catholic( women,) although the Times says they do not publish,"Open Letters'. It urged Catholics to," exit en mass" and come to them, the writers for, " A more welcoming home for you". It suggested the Catholic church alone was holding up the health care bill with objections to forcing institutions which they run to supply BC, abortion and sterilization as a violation of church/ state seperation and it is against their faith. Catholics are not the only Christians, opposed to these issues nor are Christians alone. The blab suggested the Catholic church was to blame for every illl in the world. Many of you posting here to wish to express similar views about the church although this is supposed to be a story about the Vatican Bank being as vulnerable to money laundering as many other banks in the world. What religious group paid for such a blab? Bet you guessed. The group called itself," Freedom From Religion" (NOT JUST CATHOLIC) and was made up of Aethists etc. I can just imagine the response these folks would have received from Muslims had they blamed Muslims for all the ills in the world and telling Muslim( women) to leave their faith. I truly wonder if the Times would have published it. If you would call yourself Christian, remember the words of Jesus, "Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone."

it's definitely a bottomless pit.

Read somewhere that an amount equal to that donated in response to the good work of "Mother Theresa" had been used to hide, cover up, and pay off claims of sexual abuse--at that time over a billion dollars.

Good and evil is not subjective to each individual. Is euthenasia good or evil ? Stem cell research good or evil ? Death penalty good or evil ? . "Good people" would have different views and all those views cant all be correct. There is a reason there is a church. One reason, interpret truth. (not saying behavior of all in church is good)
