Black Clergy Aims To Register One Million Voters On Easter Sunday

The battle over voter I.D. laws -- which critics say disenfranchise the poor, the elderly and citizens of color -- has been fought in state houses, court rooms and op-ed columns. And now that fight is headed for the pews.

Leaders of several prominent black churches have stated an ambitious goal: to register one million new voters on Easter Sunday. The immediate aim of the initiative, called the "Empowerment Movement," is to push back on what these leaders see as an encroachment on hard-won voting rights. But the movement's organizers are also hoping to reorient the black church toward issues of inequality and social justice.

Jamal Bryant, the Baltimore pastor who is the chief organizer of the the registration drive, said that the church’s shift from the kind of social engagement that marked the church in the 1960s was in part a function of black economic and political progress. ā€œI think of it just as a reflection of a people who have felt like we've arrived,ā€ Bryant said.

Bryant said that the idea for the voter intiative took shape in a meeting with clergy members in the city. ā€œWe called together all the denominations in Baltimore for a summit,ā€ Bryant said. They discussed what they could do around mass incarceration, high unemployment and the aforementioned voter I.D. laws, which are now on the books in 30 states.

Bryant said that there were 500,000 black churches in the United States -- the group estimates that there are five million unregistered black voters in the pews -- and their goal was to get as many of them as possible to agree to sign up at least 20 members. Bryant said the initiative had won commitments from the heads of several major denominations, and would be teaming with Rock the Vote, which focuses on registering young people, and Color Of Change, the online activist group, to tally the total. ā€œWithin 24 to 48 hours [after Easter Sunday], we’ll be able to see the numbers,ā€ Bryant said.

What happens if they fall short of the one-million vote mark? ā€œLet's say we get 700,000,ā€ Bryant said. "The first-day approach would be a 21st century approach to [the Southern Christian Leadership Committee]: we’d send people out [to help make up the difference] on the ground.ā€

Bryant said it has been at least two decades since the black church was so mobilized. ā€œThe last time we saw it wholesale was when Rev. Jackson ran in '88,ā€ he said, referring to Jesse Jackson’s unsuccessful White House campaign. ā€œThis initiative is going to formalize that and push us to the next level.ā€

This summer, the Empowerment Movement is planning to convene a think tank to craft a list of demands to send to both the Democratic and Republican nomination conventions.

ā€œThis whole movement reminds me of a neo-[SCLC],ā€ said Stephen Green, a student organizer working on the initiative, referring to the civil rights organization run by Martin Luther King, Jr. ā€œThe church, as a larger movement, has been focused on who has the largest church and having the fastest car. But now we have to put the church back into the community.ā€

ā€œOur vote is going to be very critical in this election,ā€ Bryant added. ā€œBecause we don't have super PACs, we have the people.ā€

Pres. Obama will be re-elected if he can also pull votes from other races also. Black church goers alone will not get him re-elected.

Easter Sunday? Really?!? Seriously?!? The holiest of days for believers in Jesus Christ and this is what you come up with? Shameful. Absolutely SHAMEFUL!

Not really. If you are a US citizen voting is important. Jesus Christ has been dead for many years - people sitting in the church pews are both alive and need to be politically active in one way or another.

Jesus died and arose. He lives. Don't fool yourself - the people in the pews are walking dead if have not put their faith in Christ.

This is all the black church is good for - getting votes out for politicians? I guess this what the 501C3 tax status is for - but not doing anything for the black community like in the past.

How do black church members feel about Santorum's anti-woman position which he bases on his religion? Will black unity get behind Mr. Obama, or will religious conservatism end up making new black voters for the GOP? Be careful what you wish for.

The only thing the current black church is interested in is money and sex. Therefore, if the black church does anything political then somebody in it is going to have to be paid -big time!

Can a Christian answer this question for me, Why on Easter Sunday?
Why would people of God(Pastor's) ask Christians to do this on Easter Sunday?
I Believe churches, Pastors and their followers has disconnected themselves from the Holy Spirit.
Let us fast and pray for the blind leading the blind.

For the Love of Jesus Christ!!!!

See article: Banks Foreclosing on US Churches in Record Numbers. Pastors, ministers, etc. can fool the people, but they can't fool God. You will know them by their fruits. Matt: 3: vs 10 And how also the ax is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth GOOD FRUIT is hewn down and cast into the FIRE. Bye Bye Lying (do nothing for the common people) churches!
08:36 AM on 03/16/2012
A true man/woman of God wouldn't do this on any Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, etc.. We are to pray for our leaders (regardless of whether we voted for them or agree with their policies) not campaign for them. The only campaigning that should be done in ANY Christ-believing church is campaigning for Jesus. Point blank period.

What a great strategy by the black churches to make sure that their voices are clearly heard in this election. If there really are 5M unregistered black voters in this country; than what an opportunity we have to secure a second term for President Obama. I’m sure the Republicans will still try to deploy other tactics to disenfranchise these voters. If we are to win this election; it will most certainly be by the votes of the minorities.

And you will win what? How about the church teach these people how to take care of themselves and stop living on government goodies.

If Black Ministers are going to register one million Black Voters then make sure they get picture IDS also, Our white conservative enemies (yes I said enemies because if you aren't an ally that makes you an enemy) have passed laws to make it hard or impossible for poor black people to vote, We as Black People have to realize we are in a RACIAL COLD WAR with those who oppose our right to exist on American soil for the past 50 years.

The enemy may have a Different political bent than in the past, but they are using the same tactics of voter suppression, may it be voter ID, police intimidation in majority Black Precincts or various other tactics to lower the number of African- American voters. We have to know our Republican enemy in these states where these laws and then overcome them, and that is knowledge also get those people to purchase a picture ID so this will be one less problem come November.

And to those conservatives who are offended I called them the enemy of African- Americans well, you are correct Republicans did help pass Civil Rights laws and ended Slavery, but like cancer every disease evolves, and in the last 50 years the GOP and their associates have been on the wrong side of racial justice and many have joined your crusade which is why the Solid democratic South is now Republican that is undeniable.

Why don't black people want to have a photo I.D. It makes everythink so simple as far as doctor appointments and things like that. When my Mother which was born in 1913 started a bank account she had to have a photo ID and she had never had a drivers license so she got a nondriver photo ID.This is very simple but you have to go to the drivers license office to get one and they don't come to your home .

Oh why do white conservatives want to deny African- Americans their right to vote when a picture wasn't needed in the past?

I want to know where these voting places are that never asked for ID of any kind before. I've always had to show ID, not as proof of who I am but to show that I'm voting in the right district. I have also witnessed an ID alternative (i.e., gas/electric bill, phone bill) option available when someone didn't have a state driver's license or photo ID. We have to consider all pros/cons of this no ID idea. It opens up all elections to voter fraud. If you're not required to show some form of ID, then what would stop someone from going from one polling place to another casting votes?
