The "Dogs Against Romney" mini-movement will not heel. On Sunday, the group launched a petition calling for legislation to prevent dog owners from doing to their pets what Mitt Romney did to his dog in 1983.
"Mitt Romney has admitted he transported his dog on the roof of his car, and he still indicates he doesn't think there is anything wrong with it," the group said in a release distributed by Americans United for Change. "We CANNOT let Mitt Romney set this this dangerous example for America. Help us convince lawmakers to Ban Animals on Roofs of Cars (B.A.R.C.)."
As of Sunday afternoon, the petition has nearly 1,300 signatures.
In 1983, the Romney family didn't have room in their station wagon for their Irish Setter, Seamus, so Romney attached the dog's kennel to the roof of the vehicle for a 12-hour drive to Canada. Alabama resident Scott Crider launched "Dogs Against Romney" after the Boston Globe reported the incident in 2007.
Fox News Host Chris Wallace recently reported that transporting a dog on top of a car is already illegal in Massachusetts, where Romney served as governor, but New York Times columnist Gail Collins wrote last week that the law "is actually kind of vague."
