Vegetarian Diet Could Make You Happier And Less Stressed, Study Shows

Vegetarian Diet Stress

Omnivores, take note: Embracing a vegetarian diet could make you happier and less stressed, according to new research published in Nutrition Journal.

The reason comes down to fatty acids: Diets that include meat and fish are higher in arachidonic acid (AA), an animal source of omega-6 fatty acids. Much of the meat Americans eat today is quite high in AA: The average omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid profile of modern grain-fed meat is 5 times higher than grass-fed meat, like our ancestors ate. And previous research has shown high levels of AA can cause mood-disturbing brain changes.

High-fish diets also mean higher levels of long-chain, or omega-3 fatty acids, like eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Both EPA and DHA combat the negative effects of AA. High dietary levels of omega-3 fatty acids are linked to better brain health, better mood and a host of other health benefits. Most health experts recommend an omega-6/omega-3 ratio of about 4:1.

In theory, then, frequent fish eaters should have be protected against the damaging effects of AA because of their higher intake of omega-3 acids. But an earlier study found omnivores reported significantly worse moods than vegetarians, despite higher intakes of EPA and DHA.

In this follow-up study, 39 meat-eating participants were assigned to one of three diets. A control group ate meat, fish or poultry daily; a second group ate fish 3-4 times weekly but no meat; and a third group ate strictly vegetarian. After two weeks, mood scores were unchanged for the fish- and meat-eating groups, but vegetarians reported significantly better moods and less stress.

“Restricting meat, fish, and poultry improved … short-term mood state in modern omnivores,” the researchers concluded.

After two weeks on a vegetarian diet, participants had “negligible amounts” of EPA, DHA and AA in their bodies. Fatty acid levels in the control group were unchanged. Participants in the fish eating group showed 95 to 100% higher levels of EPA and DHA fatty acids—but their omega-6 to omega-3 ratios were still heavily skewed toward omega-6′s.

To work plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids (called ALA) into your diet, try chia seeds, hemp seed, cauliflower and purslane.

One of the most interesting aspects of this study (and the other linking trans fat to aggression) is how diet might be affective in treating stress, depression, and anxiety. These findings warrant further study and could be a real improvement in therapeutic measures addressing mental and emotional well-being.

once again my comments regarding all these "SO CALLED" experts & their warnings about "this is bad for you-that is bad for you attitude" has been confirmed,as every week they come up with another warning, only to have them discredited a few years later, what they have to realise is, the more they keep on, the more likely people are to tell them to get stuffed & carry on as they were, whilst information is helpful, people do like to be able to live their lives "THEY" want "NOT" what some pompas expert thinks we should!!

What type of diet did we evolve on? Stick to that and you'll be fine.

If you're gonna go down that line, we evolved on "birds, rodents, lizards, turtles, grubs, animals of all kinds" as well as a variety of gathered plant foods. No cattle, no pork, no chicken.

But the "we" your question is a bit tricky. How far do you go back to get this "we"? The Holocene? The Palaeolithic? Pre-Homo times? And even if you do choose a time period, which geographic area will you be choosing? Because diet has varied so wildly throughout human prehistory there is no One Diet We Evolved On.

You are quite welcome to go lizard & grub hunting. But somehow I doubt you'll be doing that and keep on making snarky comments online cos you're grumpy cos you eat too much meat.

You get more energy from plants than you do from animals, it only makes sense that your physical health affects your mental health
07:47 PM on 03/13/2012
How do you think that plant feels when you kill it????? Plants have feelings too, ya know!
11:25 AM on 03/14/2012
Actually plants don't have pain receptors or a central nervous system (which you need to feel pain).
02:22 PM on 03/14/2012
"...plants have very short life-spans. The grass, for example, is born in the spring and dies within months. Animals live a long time. If you don't kill them, they will live for many years."

All the people I knew that were vegetarians got a LOT of those stomach "viruses" Not sure if there's a connection, but that is one thing I noticed on a personal level.

i think it's good to eat majority vegetables/fruits, with some meat/fish. and organic/GMO-free, pesticide-free. not to mention fair trade. water, herbal teas, fresh fruit smoothies. regular walking/jogging/exercising. breathing, meditation, massage.

yeah, everything in moderation and balance. let's stay positive and loving!

ugh! everything has a purpose! you can't expect to eat just one group of food and it be some type of miracle or fix to your body. every food has a specific purpose - including positive and negative. everything in moderation. really, the only thing i stick to is to have less carbs(this includes wheat!)/sugar than anything else. having PCOS - a diet of mainly meat and veggies has helped me stay healthier and lose weight. i also keep a very close eye on what i drink. water really is just what i drink. of course there are times where a nice cold glass of home made sugar free tea just can't be rejected. i have more energy, my hair doesn't fall out, my finger nails don't break, etc etc. and this was before i started taking any medications. everything is worlds better. some bodies function differently because of illness so it's important to find out what food you need to function properly.

Meat also contains all the fear and anger hormones that are pumped out during slaughter. So, yeah, that would tend to make one stressed.

Agreed. And I could never understand why anyone would eat an animal's liver once they knew (I assume most people know) the function of the liver. I've learned not to try to 'convert' people, but as a vegetarian for over 20 years I know I am better off (physically and mentally) than my animal-eating friends.

Exactly. I was just going to say that myself. When someone eats meat, they are directly feeding on the fear and pain of that animal who was killed. There's no happy energy there, that's for sure.
08:24 PM on 03/13/2012
In nature, animals kill animals and there is much more fear in that process of being hunted and having your throat ripped out than there is in a humanely killed animal for human consumption. I am not suggesting that the meat "industry" is a good palce to source meat, but certainly there are healthy meat sources where the animal is not filled with fear just prior to death. And if you think plants don't react the same way then you need to read a little Cleve Backster.
