'An Afternoon At The Playground': A Child's Perspective (VIDEO)

First Posted: 03/12/2012 6:22 pm Updated: 03/13/2012 11:08 am

One 31-year-old mom in Sunnyside, Queens figured out how to walk in her child's shoes. She strapped her iPod touch to her 5-year-old, set her kid free on the Thomas P. Noonan Playground and then posted the video online on MyBlockNYC, Gothamist reports.

The result is an exciting adventure chasing a blue ball, a meeting with a seemingly massive play structure and a thrilling ride on the swing. It's a reminder of just how fun the playground (and life) can be when you're under four feet tall.

The best part? The kid has a brief fall with a crying interlude, but gets right back up. So just remember: In life, they'll fall, but they'll be just fine.

I got dizzy watching the video. It's amazing how much simple joy a child can find in a ball or a swing. My 8 month old son loves peek-a-boo. My 17 yr old son would think I were insane if I were to try and play peek-a-boo with him.

Yep....just how I envisioned it. Not that interesting.

HATED IT. That's a camera's view, been done before. Plus, a good parent knows what any place looks to a child because they are there with them.

Know what I liked most? Her ability to have fun with simple equipment, and a blue ball. No need for structured, managed, engineered play. No "coaches" or carefully constructed politically correct teams. Just a kid being a kid! I watched this video immmediately after reading a blog about kids' expensive birthday parties. This video puts childrens' lives back into perspective.

The total joy I had while watching this was phenomenal!!! We spend so much time trying to grow up as children that we forget how brief a time it is. If only we had realized that we'll have the rest of our lives to be grown-ups.

I think the counter would be to strap the same iPod to the mom as she goes through her day... whadya think?

tell them tell them... in fact you... You only will be this age once...you will never revisit it again. It comes with it's own specail funs, things that only a person of this age can do... 7 year olds can play with cars in the dirt... and no one will say a word...they are doing great... 20 year olds are in school and taking summer jobs... having fun dating girls... 30 year olds start families...ect... each year is like unwrapping a specail gift that will last only one year each...enjoy them to the fullest...

For a comment on how really stimulating playgrounds can be, it is worth looking at Interaction with Nature During the Middle Years: Its Importance to Children's Development & Nature's Future
By Randy White. While playgrounds may often look like fun, they are usually designed by adults with little child input; they represent a sort of caged environment (much like a zoo as in this one) in which children and their parents are corralled to play on relatively sterile play equipment anchored on asphalt; and they apparentgly contribute little to childrens' levels of physical or cognitive development. Some have gone so far as to say that the number of such playgrounds in a city represents the degree to which we have failed children by excluding them from the remainder of city life.

This is great. You can hear the joy of play in her voice!
