Amish Buggy Drag Racing, Drinking: Youth Charged After Crash Into Police Car

March 12 (Reuters) - Four Amish youths were charged with underage drinking after they crashed their horse-drawn buggy into a police cruiser in upstate New York, authorities said on Monday.

Police were dispatched to the town of Sherman on Sunday night in response to complaints about Amish youths drinking and drag racing their horse and carriages on the road, said Chautauqua County Sheriff Joseph Gerace.

"These Amish kids in buggies were racing up and down the street," he said.

"When police came, there were two buggies on the road and each was taking a lane of traffic up. One of the buggies tried to shift out of the way when a patrol car came and ended up crashing into it," Gerace said.

The police report from the crash said the buggy flipped over and the horse broke free, running off to a nearby barn.

Four youths, aged 18 to 20, were charged with underage possession of alcohol.

Sherman is a town in western New York about 90 miles (145 km) south of Buffalo. The area is home to a large Amish community. (Reporting by Aman Ali; Editing By Barbara Goldberg and Doina Chiacu)

Do you need a state drivers license to drive a horse 'n' buggy?

Hey if these kids "knew" GOD things would have be different.
BUT they had religion.....poor kids.

Religion does nothing for anyone. Why do you think they got drunk....religion!!!

it is not a matter of religion, it is a matter of the parents teaching their what's right and whats wrong. you see the parents are to scared that their kids will leave the Amish and as most Amish people say become 'English'. they are alright with this as long as they stay Amish. and being Amish is not as religion it is a way of life and there are MANY fine people in the Amish community a lot of good Christians, it's this evil corrupt world that has taken over some and then they usually become bishops or deacons in the Amish church.

I agree. There are "many and more" good Amish people and Amish communities. I think it was just a little rumspringa going on there.

Kids being kids! At least this was less dangerous than automobiles other children have to race in when they get loaded the first time.

Ah, cologne to cover up the stench of 2000+ years of fraud, murder, rape, pestilence and pedophilia that is and was rampant in the catholic church.

(Y'all didnt think I was gonna let this one go?)

Rampant? You friend are in dire need of an education. There are over a billion Catholics on the planet right now. And if I want to see fraud, murder, rape, pestilence and pedophilia - then I'm not going to a Catholic church to find it. I'm much more likely to find it at an Occupy rally.

Me? I hardly think so. You can't open up HP without seeing the NEXT article about a Pedo priest abusing god's children.
Let also talk about the Crusades, Spanish Inquisition, catholic heritics, catholic assassins and mass murderers in the name of your god, etc, etc. Need I go on?
Go find some more fans before you decide to preach the virtues of a "catholic education".

Maybe you should tell the catholic church to stop turning away from God's commands in the bible then.

This just kills me how this is all over the Net. This happened about 6 miles from my house. Actually Amish teens drinking and racing buggies is pretty common in these parts.

I hope the horse is all right! Their putting the horses at risk is not good. Other than that, I found it funny. They're kids, being kids.

No, their not kids being kids, it's Rumspringa. It's when the Amish just release their teenagers into the real world and just let them do whatever they want. The tradition is actually pretty disturbing. Those who don't come back from Rumspringa to live in the Amish world are banished by their families.

That depends on the branch of Amish. Some are not, so long as they have not been baptized, because they were never members of the church and there is always the hope they will return. If someone is baptized and then leaves, they are shunned. On the other hand, some branches are so strict that they shun the kids if they leave, baptized or not. Interestingly, some 80+ percent choose baptism and church membership after rumspringa.
