Chris Christie: No Regret For Calling Former Navy SEAL An 'Idiot'

Chris Christie Idiot

ANGELA DELLI SANTI   03/12/12 05:32 PM ET  AP

BORDENTOWN TOWNSHIP, N.J. — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said he has no regrets about calling a former Navy SEAL an "idiot" during a shouting match at a recent public event, as a Democratic leader urged him to apologize and put an end to "schoolyard taunts."

Christie's comment capped off two minutes of increasingly heated back-and-forth with 34-year-old William Brown at a town hall-style event in Burlington County on Thursday.

"He acted like an idiot. He's an idiot. I don't have any regret about it at all," Christie said Monday during a news conference after touring a regional high school and meeting with students in a financial literacy class.

Brown, an Iraq war veteran and former Democratic candidate for state Assembly, challenged the Republican governor's plan to merge two public universities, Rutgers and Rowan. He is a law student at the Rutgers-Camden campus who opposes the merger.

Thursday's exchange ended with Christie berating the Mount Laurel man, who had interrupted the governor several times before being escorted from the event. The governor said: "Let me tell you something, after you graduate from law school, you conduct yourself like that in a courtroom, your rear end's going to be thrown in jail, idiot."

"I allowed him to talk for two, two-and-a-half minutes to lay out his position. I sat there and tried to answer. Every time I tried to answer, he yelled and started to interrupt. He did it four different times," Christie said Monday. "If you want to get into with me, I'm happy to get into it with you. But if you give it, you're going to get it back."

Christie said he's willing to entertain divergent viewpoints but insists on respect. He said Brown went to the town hall with a political agenda "to try to make me look bad."

Brown said Monday the governor is mistaken.

"I didn't make the governor look bad, the governor made the governor look bad," he said. "I never called the governor an idiot. He called me an idiot."

Brown said he went to the town hall to represent the viewpoint of 10,000 people who have signed an online petition opposing the merger, and that he meant no disrespect.

"I didn't mean to be disrespectful to the governor and if it came across that way, I apologize," he said. "The governor has a history of humiliating citizens who disagree with him."

Assembly Democratic Leader Lou Greenwald said Christie should apologize.

"Unless Gov. Christie is using his town hall meetings to audition for a spot on the Real Housewives of New Jersey, he should apologize immediately for his immature and nasty remarks," Greenwald said in a statement. "Legitimate policy disagreements should never devolve into schoolyard taunts."

Christie said he honors Brown's military service, but that "doesn't give him the right to be a jerk."

This is not the first time the tough-talking Republican governor has been criticized for using blunt language.

He infamously suggested that the media "take the bat out" on a then-76-year-old Democratic state senator who criticized him in 2011, and referred to another woman Democrat in the Legislature as "a jerk" after she criticized him for taking a state police helicopter to his son's baseball game.

“follow the bouncing ball here closely, I know you can 'cause you posses that superior "intellect" of the Left. Because the man served our country honorably, how does that give him the right to be belligerent? I know this was hard for you to comment on initially but I truly understand.”
___________________________

Well bruce,

Who determined the man in question was belligerent other than the so-called professional who had him removed, the planted audience there to support their political party in a mock meeting that was actually a press conference, and of course you and all your friends online?

You see, the Right may claim to have at least equal intelligence to the Left—except all those on the Right who make racist bumper stickers about the president, and those who laugh about it, and those who buy those racist bumper stickers…

Okay, you got me there; very few people on the Right can claim to have equal intelligence to the Left, so they have to use references to bouncing balls (and if that’s a homophobic remark, shame on you) and find roundabout ways to denigrate servicemen and women who are Democrats, or worse yet, Liberal, instead of accepting one simple fact:

[conclusion]

Amongst our innate liberties protected by the Constitution of the United Sates of America is the right to get emotional without—and I know this part will confuse you—baring arms or mentioning the Second Amendment.

You see bruce, Liberals are about including everyone in America in the decision-making process while Conservatives, well, aren’t.

So is it a surprise that Christie got upset when his press conference turned into an actual town meeting? Or that someone whose life was being directly affected by the governor’s unilateral decision got upset? Or that Christie couldn’t handle the situation with at least an attempt at the maturity and civility he himself berated the man in question for?

For that fact, how about we call Christie “the man in question” from now on, since it’s his behavior that made the situation controversial?

Bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce…

Maybe Christie needs to lose some weight, but he sure was spot-on with that loudmouth. Thanks Governor.

Most people manage not to be rude even when someone else is being less than civil. Its called manners - which no class Christie does not have. Even worse, he persists to excuse his boorish behavior rather than make any obvious effort to clean up his act. Governors are supposed to be able to handle a little heckling and roudiness without stooping to the low level vulgarity he should stride well above.

heh. new polls just in today.
Christis approval ratings just rose again.

For a Republican Gov to have good and rising approval ratings in a largely Democratic state is a pretty neat trick for someone who has boorish behaviour.

Hmm Maybe we here in NJ know something about whats going on with these obvious plants then the rest of the country.

He cannot. To show any kind of fallibility is seen as weakness for the sheep that follow. They don't have room in their minds for self reflection or nuance. The world is black and white where they are never wrong and opponents are never right.

Yes the governor should apologise for Brown disrespecting him.

That makes sense.
Being a vetean soldier does not give you the excuse, nor the right to do what Brown did.
Brown has all my respect for the his service to his country. And all my contempt for the way he acted in the meeting. He got exactly what he deserved

Since when is a town hall meeting a bad place to ask questions? It is not ruddiness to ask a question or offer an opposite view. Chris Christie is a bully who believes he can just push people around with his lack of respect and consideration for others. He's been on TV for a year now doing just that.

The navy seal is the employer, Christie is the employee, if Cristie had a problem with how the soldier was reacting he should have just said "please sir, could you give me a minute to respond to your questions?' that is what a mature person who is not a arrogant so and so and who wants to keep his job would have done!

Christie is the jerk. He uses the police to silence citizens that disagree with him. Also if ANYONE should get their say it's veterans. I rate veterans above politicians. I found it very disturbing that the Gov. couldn't strike a more adult tone.

Why would he take a state helicopter to his son's baseball game?? Now that's an issue. Does this kind of name calling surprise anyone? It happens all the time in our culture...no wonder young students are struggling with it. Look at the adults...
04:26 PM on 03/13/2012
I think the "reason" he gave for the helicopter ride was because he was running late. My guess is he didn't have the ability to walk from car to baseball field.
04:29 PM on 03/13/2012
Why would the Obama's take two planes to the same vacation spot? Now THAT'S an issue.

When someone resorts to this type of aggressive defensive confrontational style it's due to a lack of confidence. Probably explains the over-eating as well.
