George Zimmerman Neighbors Complained About Aggressive Tactics Before Trayvon Martin Killing

Trayvon Martin

First Posted: 03/12/2012 9:13 pm Updated: 03/13/2012 8:02 am

A volunteer community watch captain who shot an unarmed Florida teenager to death last month had been the subject of complaints by neighbors in his gated community for aggressive tactics, a homeowner said.

George Zimmerman has not been charged in the Feb. 26 shooting of Trayvon Martin, 17, who was walking home from a convenience store in Sanford, Fla., near Orlando. Zimmerman, who patrolled the Retreat at Twin Lakes development in his own car, had been called aggressive in earlier complaints to the local police and the homeowner's association, according to a homeowner who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

At an emergency homeowner’s association meeting on March 1, ā€œone man was escorted out because he openly expressed his frustration because he had previously contacted the Sanford Police Department about Zimmerman approaching him and even coming to his home,ā€ the resident wrote in an email to HuffPost. ā€œIt was also made known that there had been several complaints about George Zimmerman and his tactics" in his neighborhood watch captain role.

The meeting was attended by Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee, the detective assigned to the investigation and an unnamed member of the city council, according to the homeowner’s association newsletter. The chief couldn't immediately be reached for comment about the complaints. A member of the homeowner’s association board, who asked not to be quoted by name, said she ā€œhadn’t heard about any complaintsā€ about Zimmerman. Zimmerman's phone number is disconnected and efforts to reach him have been unsuccessful.

Talk of prior complaints against Zimmerman comes as pressure mounts on law enforcement. Protesters have gathered outside Sanford police headquarters. The Martin's family and attorneys have held press conferences calling the killing an outrage and pleading for Zimmerman’s arrest. High school classmates and citizens are granting interviews to reporters asking why no one has been charged. And as the story continues to gain national media attention, civil rights leaders, including members of the NAACP and the Rev. Al Sharpton, said they are preparing to join the family of Martin, who was black. Zimmerman is white.

ā€œThis case is disturbing to say the least,ā€ Sharpton told Huffpost. ā€œThis is appalling, to think that this guy admitted to initiating the conversation and that there was no crime other than the killing of this young man. Yet, [Zimmerman] is walking around with no threat of an arrest.ā€

Sharpton said he will travel to Florida this week.

Zimmerman called police the evening of the shooting to report Martin as a suspicious person, police have said. A dispatcher told Zimmerman to stand down and an officer was on the way. Zimmerman confronted the youth anyway and Martin was shot in the chest with Zimmerman's 9 mm pistol, police said. Police questioned Zimmerman, then released him.

According to Martin’s family, police initially told them that Zimmerman said he acted in self-defense and that his record was ā€œsqueaky-clean.ā€ Public records show he was arrested in Orange County in 2005 on charges of resisting arrest with violence and battery on a law enforcement officer. Those charges were later dropped.

Benjamin Crump, the Martin family’s attorney, filed a public records lawsuit last week seeking the 911 recordings for the night of the shooting. Crump said people with access to the tapes told him Zimmerman made a comment about Martin’s race during the call and said he had no intention of letting the youth get away because, ā€œthey always get away.ā€

ā€œI don’t think they have any intention on arresting this white man for killing this black boy,ā€ Crump said on Sharpton’s radio show Monday.

Chief Lee said during a Monday afternoon news conference that his department’s investigation should be concluded by Tuesday and delivered to the Seminole County State Attorney’s Office. Lynne Bumpus-Hooper, a spokeswoman for the State Attorney’s Office, said once the case is handed over ā€œit will be thoroughly digested and we will make decisions.ā€

Protestors jeered Lee during the news conference when he said he does not believe his investigators have enough evidence to charge Zimmerman in the killing, according to local news accounts. Lee said that he believes that ā€œwe can get through all the ugly thoughts and all the disagreements and all the ill will and hard feelings and truly come together as a community.ā€

ā€œIt is with that thought that we want to make sure that we due a fair and complete and thorough investigation so that we can reach some form of justice with this event,ā€ Lee said. He added ā€œthat there is the right for someone that has a concealed weapons permit to carry that weaponā€ and that police support the neighborhood watch program.

ā€œIn this case Mr. Zimmerman has made the statement of self defense," Lee said. "Until we can establish probable cause to dispute that, we don’t have the grounds to arrest him.ā€

One person shouted, "The black community sees your department protecting the shooter," and "a little black boy is dead."

Martin, a high school junior, who had hoped to go to college and become an aviation mechanic, his family said. He lived with is mother in Miami and was visiting his father and his father’s fiancĆ©e in Sanford the weekend he was killed. During the NBA All-Star Game, he walked to a nearby store to get candy for his little brother.

Arriving police found Martin’s 140-pound body face-down in a patch of grass less than 100 feet from his family’s home. The young man was unarmed, with a few dollars and a pack of Skittles in one pocket and a canned iced tea in the other.

ā€œHe was a typical teenager, he loved life,ā€ Tracy Martin, the teen’s father, said. ā€œBut now, all the family wants is justice.ā€

I read a Tea Party article that said if George Zimmerman was at Sandy Hook those children would still be alive. I responded with a posted comment that if Trayvon Martin was still alive he might have saved the children of Sandy Hook, with Skittles, Iced Tea and a smile if he met the attacker. My point is you don't need a gun to save people. Sometimes a smile, compassion and understanding goes along way compared to a scowl, hatred and deception. Of course Zimmerman the gun slinger of Flordia meeting the automatic rifle of the beast of Sandy Hook is some twisted extremist concept that guns solve problems. Where I stand they seem to be causing a lot of trouble. Zimmerman said he forgot he was carrying a gun and only realized in his allegation that Trayvon was reaching for his gun. Since Trayvon is dead so Mr Zimmerman thinks we should believe his story over the resultant dead teen. Maybe guns do solve problems. You don't like something just shoot it (sounds a bit of the self-righteous rhetoric of the Tea Party doesn't it?)

Sorry but if you read the facts and look at the evidence there is no way he will be convicted!

Kevin, I agree with you 100%. Dunderheaded creeps like this AMJ character are too inept to know that they're displaying their ignorance for the world to see. The facts are not on Zimmerman's side. Anyone who thinks otherwise is extremely inept or racially biased and prehaps both.

If you don't think Trayvon didn't look like that you are only kidding yourself. That picture was taken in 2011. Show proof that he didn't. Are we to believe that is you in that picture above your comment....maybe... maybe not. If Zimmerman was justified in what he done. He would have walked a long time ago. GZ lied to Detectives...he lied about what happened that night. Forensics can't even match up with GZ's lies. As far as "let Zimmerman walk"...He should have walked in the opposite direction that night when the dispatcher told him "he didn't need to follow TM".

Men who beat women and then eventually kill them build up to the killing. George showed a prpopensity to be violent and harass people. What part of that don't you get?
07:37 AM on 04/06/2013
I'd flag you as abusive and insensitive but we must even look at the ugliness that each other creates.

(from continued)

Does anyone see a pattern in GZ's behavior? While the FBI found no evidence of a hate crime, they did evaluate GZ and determine he had what they refer to as a "little hero" complex. GZ either got in over his head, or was so desperate to be recognized as a hero he was willing to kill to do so, but either way, he was negligent and accountable for the death of a young man whose only proven offense was "standing his ground."

At one time in his life, GZ wanted to be a police officer, but couldn't pass exams. Not being one to give up so easily on his dream, he became a security guard, but was later fired for inappropriate conduct. Despite these setbacks, he was still determined to find a way to fulfill his dream of being a hero, so he made himself captain of a an unofficial neighborhood watch. And just so he looks and feels the part of super cop, he starts carrying around a gun, even though real neighborhood watch policy is against that for patrols. Then one night, he sees his chance to show, once and for all, that he was born to "protect and serve." So here goes this kid dressed in a hoodie, which everone knows is a sure sign of a criminal, and GZ stalks him. He calls dispatch and reports TM as he stalks him, and dispatch tells him they don't need him to stalk the suspect, but GZ does it anyway. Before GZ regains his senses, TM confronts GZ for ghosting him, and "stands his ground." But poor TM doesn't realize GZ has been preparing for this moment for years, and that while GZ didn't necessarily know specifically who the criminal he was going to shoot would be, he had prepared himself to shoot someone who perhaps was unwilling to go along peacefully. It almost seems premeditated.

no almost about it. the premeditation may have lasted only a few minutes, but that's long enough for someone bent on proving he can cut it as a law ENFORCEment officer.

I really think he was planning on killing someone for a long time. He was immediately prepared to launch a website. He expected to be treated as a hero and make a lot of money. Way too many people want to kill another, they want it to be justified, but they want to kill another.
08:02 AM on 04/06/2013
I agree. In Zimmerman's statement he said he forgot he was carrying a gun. I don't know about you but if I was carrying lethal force at my beck and call you'd be sure I'd remember I had a gun on me especially since he had a license for carrying a concealed weapon. Kind of careless to place yourself in a situation that can escalate into the use of force. GZ was an aggressor to a frightened teen. GZ also wasn't familiar with the streets (so he says) in his own neighborhood that he as the unofficial Neighborhood Watch captain. The next day he was having trouble describing the clothes that Trayvon was wearing to the investigators. Another love story of a man and his gun. It's the same old story for love and for glory.

If George Zimmerman was the watch capitan of the neighborhood watch then I shiver to think about what the oher recruits are like..... I tell you it's funny that people want to give fancy names to security guards.....

What is equally as outrageous as the killing of Trayvon is that the posters on here who have taken the names of all the friends of families and friends of Trayvon and mixed it to make various accounts and have been making a mockery of Trayvon's death... Shame on these people and shame on the ones who show any kind of malice towards Trayvon and his family.

People can defend George Zimmerman all they want, we Team Trayvon don't care but back off
on the insulting, there is no merits to your stories,, show how low your mentality is.
