2012 NCAA Tournament: Eight Potential Cinderella Teams

First Posted: 03/13/2012 11:26 am   Updated: 03/13/2012 11:39 am

The beauty of the NCAA Tournament is David vs. Goliath; even the most remote of schools have a chance to play with the big boys. Remember when little-known 15-seed Hampton beat Iowa State in 2001? Or how about when Bucknell beat Kansas? And who could forget when Weber State beat mighty North Carolina in 1999? These are the moments we live for, and these are the eight teams with the best chance to become our new giant-killers.

That the Gaels were the last team in the field of 68 doesn't matter anymore. Led by senior point guard Scott Machado -- the nation's leader in assists at 10 per game -- Iona is a fast-paced blur that thrives in transition with forward Mike Glover, a fluid athlete who averages 19 points and 9 rebounds. Employing an up-tempo style reminiscent of the Phoenix Suns' famed "seven seconds or less" system, Iona is college basketball's top-scoring team (83 per game). Unfortunately, opponents are usually able to fill it up as well, as the Gaels surrender better than 50 percent field goal shooting.
