'All The Cool Girls Are Lesbians' T-Shirt Sparks Controversy At Massachusetts School (VIDEO) (POLL)

The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: 03/13/2012 4:42 pm

Controversy erupted at a Lynn English High School meeting that was held to discuss an incident where a student was told to cover up -- and never bring back to school -- a shirt that read, "All the cool girls are lesbians," WDHD-TV reports.

Although the student wore the shirt back in January, it wasn't addressed until Mayor Judith Flanagan Kennedy brought it up to the school committee last week.

In the meeting, Kennedy said the girl contacted her to say she had been wronged by the school, a sentiment with which the mayor told the committee she agreed.

"I did some legal research on this and I believe she is right," Kennedy told the Daily Item. "I don't believe the school had the authority to ask her to cover it up."

According to the Item, the girl's letter said Vice Principal Joseph O'Hagan told her to cover up her shirt because it was "political" and "offensive to some people."

If girls were allowed to wear shirts that say "I love boys," the student said, she should be allowed to wear hers.

For a look at the legal argument against the school, check out this article. And be sure to tell us what you think in the poll and the comments below.

No, an equivalent statement would be:
'If girls were allowed to wear shirts that say "All the cool girls are straight," the student said, she should be allowed to wear hers.'

As an administrator I wouldn't mind a shirt that said "I'm gay and here to stay!" or "lesbians rock!" but depending on context this could be construed as bullying.

I highly doubt that was offensive to anyone but a homophobe. Even they probably weren't...because they know lesbians are cool. :P
It's silly how this girl can get in trouble but another law passed about how homophobic people can speak out against a homosexual if their religion gives them precedent.

The shirt was functional. It covered the girl. Any message on it should be protected by the First Amendment.

Where can I get this shirt? I love it.

I still don't get what the issue is about the shirt. If you don't agree, then...don't. This is a ridiculous distraction from education.

I think the shirt is cute (I know...shocked look..). Having said that, if the school follows a strict dress code then the dress code must be for all. They need to be fair to all of the students, not just the ones that they agree with.

All the cool girls are actually Bisexual :9

But aside from that there's nothing wrong with the shirt

I don't know what the problem is. I liked the T-shirt.
02:17 AM on 03/25/2012
What if a guy wore the shirt?
02:15 AM on 04/19/2012
It would probably have said, "all the cool girls are bisexual"

If I refer to these type articles as "Homo Promos" will the Huffington cover them up by deleting them or will they let them be displayed ?

You sound like the type that probably uses bible verses to back up most of your posts.
To refer to the article as a "home Promo" isn't very "christian is it? I don't think huff-post should delete your posts. It lets the world see how hypocritical and Un-Jesus like
people like you can be.

Jesus said His followers should, "live by...every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." Matthew 4:4

If you should ever get to the point of knowledge I am at after listening to the whole Bible many, many times and in doing much subject study of what is taught in the Bible, I would welcome your helping me come to a better understanding on something where I am truly in error.

You can get a free download of an audio King James Bible on the net or a copy on one DVD for $10 from ChristianBook.Com plus postage. There is more to being accurately like Jesus wants His followers to be than most people understand.

Make them wear uniforms.

THE T-SHIRT WOULD'VE BEEN FINE IF IT SAID "ALL THE LESBIAN GIRLS ARE COOL". I'M SURE THERE ARE GIRLS IN THE SCHOOL WHO CONSIDER THEMSELVES "COOL" BUT ARE NOT LESBIANS. SIMPLY REWORD THE T-SHIRT, PROBLEM SOLVED.

If you wanna be gay be gay.But the problem is that some people try to convert confused kids into being gay with them.this shirt for example.I dont have a problem with gay people its the ones who insist that everyone should join them that upsets me.Perez Hilton for example.the ones that insist there is something wrong with you if you disagree .

Lolololololol. Gays are trying to convert? Huh?

Straight people and the society they run are trying to force everyone to be straight. Straight people, stop trying to convert me!

I agree...lol. Can't go anywhere without someone trying to "save me". I have never once recieved a publication that tried to "turn me gay". I have never been stopped and preached to about the "glorious way of the gays". Just because gay citizens want to be treated like every other American and our publicly fighting for that equality, doesn't mean they are "trying to convert you".

This isn't freedom of speech so much as being discriminatory towards a minority. There's definitely a negative connotation in there aimed towards lesbians

Wooooow, all the school kids went home and had a good laugh at that. I have to say she is a brave girl. But, sadly soon to be even more alienated. I hope she is as strong on the inside as she thinks she is.

Most kids probably wouldn't have cared one way or the other, only some kids are bullies and jerks, they're just usually the more likely to be noticed in the media. If a cute girl had worn a shirt like that when I was in HS I would have been more interested in hearing about whether she had slept with any girls and asking for details.

Exactly, who cares what they wear? As long is there are no naked ladies. Cause then the boys won't be able to stand up. The media wastes too much time searching for news. Most is not worth reporting.
