SXSW 2012: Anonymous Documentary 'We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists' Premieres (VIDEO)

Three months after the infamous hacktivist collective "Anonymous" orchestrated a massive attack on the Austin, Texas-based security think tank Strategist Forecasting, the cyber villains have once again invaded the city -- this time, right in front of an audience.

The loosely-knit hacker group is the focus of a new documentary called "We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists," which premiered last night at Austin's South by Southwest Film Festival.

As part of the festival's conference lineup, director Brian Knappenberger participated in a panel about the film where he was joined by Gregg Housh, a former member of the group who has now gone public, and two masked members who appeared in person and via video stream, KUT News reports.

The panel discussed the documentary before moving onto to a larger discussion regarding the objectives and future of hactivism.

"We fight for the users," the member appearing via video stream told the panel.

Any person can claim to be anonymous and post a YouTube video. That doesn't mean anonymous supports what's in the video. Anonymous is committed to free speech - and therefore will not Hirt users just because they are stupid enough to use Facebook.

This past week several members were arrested in England and elsewhere, they are a real threat, just like Julian Assange, because they expose and embarrass not only our government, but the wrongdoings of banks and other major players of the 1%. I think maybe we need them more than we know. They exposed the fact that the drug cartels were stashing their ill-begotten loot in American banks. The fact that their main guy flipped on them, is understandable. Let's face it, if the DOJ comes after you, and you don't wish to be "disappeared" you are going to co-operate. Guess they didn't have to water-board Juno or whatever his name is.
