Vision-Impaired Student Allegedly Taped To Chair By Teacher

A teacher at the Friendship Public Charter School in Washington D.C., was fired after she allegedly taped Christian Washington, a 9-year-old vision-impaired student, to his classroom chair, WUSA TV reports.

Christian's mother, Terik Washington, told the station that she was outraged when she learned of the teacher's actions.

"His rights were violated. It's against the law," Washington told WUSA. "It should never, never, ever come to the point where someone is taped to anything, ever. If you're not a police officer, you have no right to restrain anyone, ever."

According to FOX News, the teacher wrapped tape around Christian's chest and legs multiples times after he continued leaving his seat.

"She was laughing," the student said, according to Fox News. "Everybody in the class was laughing at me.

Last week, school officials terminated the teacher after putting her on administrative leave -- a move for which Terik said she is grateful.

"I don't think this should happen to anyone's child, ever," Washington told WUSA.

Last year, a paraprofessional at Whitehead Road Elementary School in Athens, Ga., was put on leave after allegedly taping a girl's mouth shut.

The Athens Banner-Herald reported that the school placed the teacher under investigation, saying that the teacher's alleged actions violated school policy and that the district "will not tolerate it."
