Ferriday Drug Bust: Some Residents Of Louisiana Town Angered By Arrests (VIDEO)

Posted: 03/13/2012 4:08 pm

In most cities, residents would be happy if 30 people were arrested for selling crack, cocaine, marijuana and firearms in their neighborhood.

But not in Ferriday, La.

Instead, some residents in the neighborhood are livid, saying the arrests are making it harder for them to sell their own drugs.

"You have to realize, we don't have no jobs around here or nothing," Derrick Brown told KALB.com. "Every time we try to make a little something to get on our feet or try to feed our family they come kicking the doors in and knocking us back down again."

All 30 arrests came Friday in Ferriday -- a town of 3,723 people most famous for being the birthplace of rocker Jerry Lee Lewis -- after a yearlong joint investigation called Delta Blues involving federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

The investigation, which targeted a local gang called the Sixth Street Boys, led to the seizure of 8 oz. of crack cocaine, a half kilo of powdered cocaine, 20 lbs. of marijuana, as well as firearms, currency and three vehicles, according to the Natchez Democrat.

Concordia Parish Sheriff Randy Maxwell told the Natchez Democrat that the operation was a huge success and that he was glad to see longtime dealers off the streets.

“It was a great success and the reason was because of the great cooperation with all of the agencies,” Maxwell said. “We got a lot of the big time players and longtime dealers in the parish.”

KALB.com reporter Brooke Buford said on air that she was surprised by Brown's reaction to the bust, but former narcotics cop Neill Franklin, the executive director of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition said this is old news to anyone familiar with the drug war.

"[Brown] made so much sense," Franklin told the Huffington Post. "This is an economic issue. In communities like these, there is no opportunity for employment or education. These people have to make money to buy food and pay bills. If there are no jobs, what do you expect they'll do?" The LEAP organization works to advocate for effective drug policies.

Ferriday Mayor Glen McGlothin told The Huffington Post that Buford's piece didn't tell the full story, but adds, "I would like to think that's because she is young."

"There are lots of people who are happy about the drug bust, but they are people who believe in law and order and were scared because of all the drugs."

He said that the people who are complaining that the only jobs available involve selling drugs don't see that they are part of the problem. "I assume people would rather start businesses in areas where drugs aren't being sold," he said.

Robert Housman, who was assistant director for strategic planning in the White House drug czar's office during the Clinton Administration, said the notion that selling drugs is the only option for Ferriday residents is "nonsense."

"There have been studies on the economics of drug-buying," Housman told The Huffington Post. "When you consider things like the risk and the costs of the drugs, you don't make a lot of money. Most people who sell are not eking out a living, they're merely supporting their own drug habit."

Franklin said he believes that providing economic and education opportunities to people in poor neighborhoods is the key to reducing the drug trade, but Housman said drug-buying habits are the reasons there are fewer opportunities.

"People don't want to open up businesses in neighborhoods like this," he said. "But many of these people selling drugs do have good business minds and could succeed if they applied themselves."

"some residents in the neighborhood are livid, saying the arrests are making it harder for them to sell their own drugs." I used to find it hard to beleive that a person or group of people could be so stupid. I guess that was becasue I was in Europe for about 10 years.

"You have to realize, we don't have no jobs around here or nothing," I'm curious to know what jobs are there supposed to be "around here"? CEO of a major bank perhaps? Hospital Administrator? Jet Pilot? Nuclear Suibmarine Commander?

"they come kicking the doors in and knocking us back down again." Wow! he sees dope peddleing as sign of rising above something. Someone should take him aside and calmly explain the fallacy of that logic. And, if it seems that he's not getting it, commence to beating his ass to a pulp.

"[Brown] made so much sense," Franklin told the Huffington Post. "This is an economic issue." Now that beast all. People like Franklin are as much the problem as the junkies themselves. How on earth can it be an economic issue? In the richest country in the world where people come in the thousands daily to make a life for themselves, and they continioulsy succeed at doing just that. We have natural born citizen too twisted, misguided with an such an exagerated sense of pride it makes them functionally useless.

I wonder if privitization of social reform for the perpetualy dysfunctional would...

Well said !!! Thats why this country is so messed up the lazy want the money but not the work. But the government makes it to easy to collect free money. If your hungry enough you can find a job no matter what kind of job. Selling drugs means your way lazy by sitting their all day waiting to make a sale.

gosh wonder if ollie north could find it in his heart to help these downtrodden purveyors tl they get back on their feet. he moved tons of base/crack caine around and used cash to support illegalcontra war. It started the crack epidemic as tons hit the major cities and Ragunz and spouse declared just say no. Ollie got off on a technicality and a pardon. Probably still has lots of loot in offshore banks

what the what? "You have to realize, we don't have no jobs around here or nothing," Derrick Brown told KALB.com. "Every time we try to make a little something to get on our feet or try to feed our family they come kicking the doors in and knocking us back down again."
When you feed your family by selling a drug that robs other families of their addicted relatives lives, and ultimately your taking food off of another persons table because your feeding their addiction with poison. You deserve more than a boot. Dumb Ass!

I am not surprised at the mentality of these ingrates. Living off the hard-earned taxes of real Americans is their way of life. It is inbred from the beginning, and won't stop until the State begins to audit each individual. Massive Welfare and Medicaid fraud should have been the focus, not illegal drugs. Take away the Fed and State Check and the money for the Drugs starts to have a real effect. BTW, where are the Pastors, Leaders of the Community?

Great point !! I had my first job at 13yrs of age doing a paper route and also doing chores around the house like cutting the grass. I have been paying taxes since 17yrs of age and 30yrs later when left ill by 9/11. I go to SSI for help which is hard to do when your a real working person and they want to tell me you look fine. I don't see why you would need assistance even before reading my illness. I pointed out the proud parents of their teenage daughter who gave birth to a baby at age 16yrs. They were so happy to give this teen money she can't work she has to raise a baby. Plus she needs her own place so she get a rent free apt which she will subrent to someone else. If they gave me a check that is one less teen getting a free ride. Maybe I should go sell drugs that is much wiser of me and less stress on SSI.

When writing these articles, no one ever asks where they are getting their stash from. Did they grow it? Did they manufacture their own cocaine? They had to get the stuff from somewhere! Often times the source is the same people who control the law enforcement for the area. This racket has been going on for decades!!!! Time to wake up guys.
11:27 PM on 04/28/2012
95% of the drugs came from Texas via Mexico, via Colombia, Peru and El Salvador. you get the picture. Local law enforcement know the level of drug activity in the community, but they consider it job security, just like the prison guards and doctors.

Hate to admit it, but you're right. In a recent documentary on Drugs, Inc. one of the informants\drug mules said that when they bring drugs in over the border. The police are paid in advance. He said, they will have 3 trucks with drugs. One will be a decoy and the gurds will confiscate it while allowing the other 2 with the big loads pass on through. He said you never see a bust of tractor trailers of drugs unless someone didn't pay. Just consider how easy it is to buy the stuff, that alone should convince us that there is some involvement in high places.

The headline to this "story" is inaccurate. There is no proof that Ferriday residents are angry at the drug bust. The video shows one person who is not happy about it, the other two people describing the events in their own unique way, and all of a sudden ignorance spreads like wildfire! HA!
