Gabrielle Union Revisits Rape, Reveals Her 'Aha! Moment' To O, The Oprah Magazine

First Posted: 03/14/2012 12:31 pm Updated: 03/14/2012 2:31 pm

Despite the trauma she endured at the hands of a rapist at the age of 19, Gabrielle Union calls the experience her "Aha! moment" in the April 2012 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine.

"It wasn't long before I became uncomfortable with feeling like a victim," Union says, describing how the attack taught her to discern who was in her life for positive reasons and who were simply "so-called friends," many of whom she says visited after the incident only to gawk and gather a first-hand account of what she looked like.

Union has been vocal about her attack in the past, appearing on an Oprah radio show and testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2009 about being raped. Union was also tapped last year to sit on the National Advisory Committee on Violence Against Women.

In her sit-down with The Oprah Magazine, which she tweeted might be "one of my favorite interviews I've ever done," Union says therapy helped her determine who was in her life to encourage "survivorhood" and who was there to promote "victimhood."

Being selective in who she keeps close is a practice Union says she uses in deciding which roles to take as well. "In my career, there have been roles I haven't taken because someone involved with the project gave me a bad vibe," she says, recalling a line from the 1997 film "Love Jones," -- "All we have...is all these years."

For Union, those years are better spent surrounded by positive people. "You don't get any points when you get to heaven for putting up with bullshit," she told O.

Union headed to Capitol Hill last month to host a briefing on preventing teen dating violence, tweeting before the event "Good mornin good ppl! Nat'l Advisory Committee meetings on Violence Against Women (& children) 2 day...tryin 2 make a difference."

This is about the ongoing degradation of core values within our community. Do not be silenced! We MUST talk about rape and sexually oriented agression to and by African-Americans over and over again until it STOPS.

I want to like her, I really do but everytime I hear interviews and such she always come off as snobby, and just has this "I'm too good for this" attitude. Love Wade though, he's awesome.

Somehting like 1 in 4 Black women 15-40 years of age will be raped in her lifetime. This sad statistic prowls our consciousness like a panther, ready to strike somebody we know and love: a mother? A daughter? An aunt? We men have a heavy debt in bad karma to lug around because we haven't done enough to prevent women and girls from being harmed. Speaking up for women is a good start; taking their side in these endless debates about their right to contraception; advocating that cities and towns provide better services to rape victims; educating youth about rape and how to avoid situations (like drinking too much) which put them in danger. Kicking bad law enforcement officials and officers out of the business if they won't pursue sexual violence cases - like Arizona Sheriff Arpao, who ignores violence in the Hispanic community. There are no easy answers, but doing nothing while our female friends, co-workers (and even strangers) are attacked is collusion in the problem. Real men don't rape women, nor let it happen if they can stop it.

Aliberalkidd: By going over this rape, again with O / Oprah, Union ignored her own advice, and feed into Oprah insatiable lust for all the intimate details of sex related aggression, especially among African Americans. Sometimes Oprah seems like that judge busted for getting off behind his bench, over graphic sexual assault testimony.

Oprah prefers to talk about past sexual assaults rather than ongoing acts or racial hostility and aggression in America and the difficulty for African American actors, writers, directors, and Union to get quality work in Hollywood.

ALiberalKidd -

Apples and oranges. Yes, racial hostility/aggression and difficulties facting black artists in America are important. These topics deserve A LOT of attention.

But, sexual violence against women, children, and (yes!) men is very important as well. This is not discussed in the black community nearly as much as it warrants. As long as it's still happening, I want victims to tell their stories in order to get their power back and also to let other who share the same experiences to know they are not alone. Period.

Oprah can't be all things to all people. She is probably so connected to this topic because of her own past experience.

I hope that you are using YOUR voice to get the word out on topics that are close to your heart. No, you don't have the visibility of Oprah. But, it seems more productive than complaining that she isn't doing enough.

Moonbaby, I hear you, but in no way am I the only one tired of Oprah and Tyler Perry’s Drama Queen episodes! Do realize that the absolute racial truth, is not tolerated in America? So Oprah could not have made it to the top of anywhere had see attempted to deal with America’s greatest unresolved issue! And if she can not be all things to all people then should Reverend Sharpton, Jessie Jackson, Harry Belafonte, etc…spend their entire lives fighting in the streets, while Oprah is being praised!

When I was a child of six or seven one of my older sisters would use my body like a limp sex doll on the nights she was in a way, forcing my hand where she need it to be. I was too young to object, assist, profit, or understand what was happening back then, and now I am too old, wise, and sophisticated to care. But I could have shame my family and sister by going public, in exchange for a book deal, TV show, profit, or advancement. However, those few incidents were trivial and petty compared to the life of racism I face in America. And Americans would prefer to hear Oprah expose and spill on African American family incidents, rather than Anglo American atrocities!

Moonbaby1980, thanks for your input... feels as though I know you!

I think she would play a real good Whitney, a few people look at her in a negative way, I think she has a good head on her shoulders, on top of that she's beautiful, being raped may sound like a sob story to some but i think if you never had to endure it you really shouldn't speak on it except to perhaps offer sincerity to the victim.

OKAY. She was one of the one's who decided to party at Clive's while Whitney's dead body was still in the building, only a few floors above them. She is also the one that dated a married man while he was still married to his wife.

I have noticed that she trots this story out everytime a bad one comes out about her. How many times can she use the "I was once raped" story to cover up her bad habits and bad press?

Truth be told, Gabrielle Union, cannot take a bad picture and she's beautiful from the inside out. I'm happy to know that she knows the importance of keeping her surroundings in the positive.
