Going into the contest, the outcome of the race remained difficult to predict, according to the latest polls.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was hoping to score a win in the Magnolia State, as well as in the Alabama primary, in his effort to give new life to his presidential campaign. Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum were also hoping to make a splash with their respective performances in the presidential battleground.
Ron Paul is also on the ballot in Mississippi.
Voters in Hawaii also hit the polls on Tuesday to cast ballots in the state's caucus.
