March 14 Pi Day At Maryland Science Center And Albert Einstein's Birthday

Albert Einstein

03/13/12 04:55 AM ET  AP

BALTIMORE -- Wednesday is March 14, or 3-14, the first three digits of the number pi. With that in mind, the Maryland Science Center will be celebrating Pi Day with events dedicated to all things related to pi, and even pie.

Pi is the uneven ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter and events include reciting as much of the number as participants can remember. Other events include pie-eating contests and pizza pie tossing.

Wednesday is also Albert Einstein's birthday. The famed physicist would have turned 133 on Wednesday and the celebration will include singing "Happy Birthday" to Einstein as well as experiments related to his work.

Me- Huh ... Huffington Post changed their font to the symbol for pi.
My ladyfriend- that's because it's "pi day".
Me- I see here that it's also Einstein's birthday today.
Please ... no comment needed. I feel bad enough as it is.
My better half suggests that I didn't make the connection because I'm not a geek. What a sweetheart!

Pie are not square, pie are round.  Cake are square and ice are cubed.

If they are going to toss pies, let's not forget Soupy Sales, or The Three Stooges. I'll bet Einstein enjoyed a good laugh now and then too.

In 1897 the Indiana House unanimously passed a bill that changed Pi to a round number. See:

The proper term is "irrational", not "uneven". Pi is not an "odd" ratio either. It is represented as a decimal number with an infinite number of digits because it does not have a repeating group or exact representation in the form of a fraction composed by two integer numbers. In school, 22/7 is taught as an approximation with the value of 3.1428571 to seven significant digits while pi is 3.1415926 to seven significant digits.

so then do we have to wait until march 14 , 2015 (3.14.15?) for the next pi day. I always remembered pi as 3.142857, now I know why i am wrong all the time. thank you for clearing that up for me.

We don't have to wait for 3.14.15 but it'll be a Super PI Day!
