Santorum Calling For Gingrich To Quit?

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/13/2012 9:36 pm Updated: 03/13/2012 10:17 pm

CNN reporter Jim Acosta tweeted Tuesday night that Rick Santorum spokeswoman Alice Stewart told him that Santorum was "now calling for [Newt] Gingrich to get out of the race."

I called Hogan Gidley, Santorum's communications director, and he said that Stewart had said no such thing.

"We would never call on him to get out. That's absolutely ridiculous," Gidley said. "If she said it, she misspoke." He added: "She was saying 'absolutely' to the premise of the question."

So I went back and looked at the tape of Stewart's interview with Acosta on CNN.

"It seems to me what you guys might say is, 'Newt Gingrich it's time to go,'" Acosta said.

"Absolutely," Stewart responded. "Being a son of the South, he should be doing much better than this. But these numbers just indicate that Rick Santorum is the conservative in this race."

A few moments later, Acosta asked Stewart about Santorum's comment on the Glenn Beck radio show Tuesday that "it would be great if he would get out of this race."

Stewart responded: "I think all of them should get out of the race. They should both step aside, because Rick is the conservative candidate that can take on Barack Obama."

"After tonight this is going to be a two-man race. It's going to be Rick and Mitt, and we're going to clear the field and Rick's got a good shot down the road," Stewart said.

So a number of nods to the idea of Gingrich jumping out, and an assertion that he will, and a one-word answer of "absolutely" to a question of whether the Santorum campaign thinks Gingrich should leave the race. But no explicit call to do so.

Santorum should be the one to quit. He has 16 years experience reading and writing legislation and voting yes or no. He does not have the experience and ability to lead our country. What heroic act did Senator Santorum do where he considers he deserves over $11,000 per month ($132,000 per year) more than soldiers wounded defending our freedom? I am a veteran and feel I have the right to write this letter. I am not receiving veterans disability. Senator Santorum served in the Congress for sixteen years. He was a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, the group who decides military pay and pensions. As a senator, Rick Santorum twice voted to raise his pay. Senator Santorum gave himself over $14,000 per month while deciding to compensate veterans wounded and disabled in defense of this nation less than $3,000 per month. Raising the pay for men and women disabled defending our nation would not have cost Senator Santorum anything. Someone who cared; someone grateful, would have given them more.

I doesn't matter whether his camp said it or not. Newt is finished. He's like the walking dead. And I Santorum really believes that he is the true conservative then he needs to campaigne like he is and not worry about Newt one way or the other.

But the reality is that even if Santorum somehow ends up with more delegates than Romney, he won't be the nominee, either.

It's much ado about nothing.

Newt doesn't seem to be fighting Ricky's words.
What's going on here? Are they forming an alliance? If this comes down to a brokered convention, will Newt give his delegates to Rick to gang up on Mitt?

Santorum doesn't want Newt out of the race. It takes both of them to deny Romney the nomination.

Get President Obama to appoint Gingrich as Secretary of Energy so he can get right on that $2.50 gallon of gas thing.

BUT only as a part time position...His other part time position would be head of NASA so we can get that moon colony project done...

As long as Newt compliments Ricky....Ricky can't decide what to do?

What would EITHER of them do when faced with a REAL crisis?

why can't they just run on the issues...The price of Gas is too high...we need to abolish the housing specialists and save the property owning taxpayer... Remember its the Landlords that paid these housing specialist salaries...Not the NON paying tennants...

They can't win on the issues; Gas is high, today. But it has been high before. The stock market topped 13,000 (almost double what is was when Bush left office). Unemployment has gone down and job creation has gone up for four straight months.
And I am a landlord, I don't pay those "specialists", my tenants do since I am include the property taxes and insurance costs into the rent. Any property-owning taxpayer who needs saving just needs a better CPA or tax attorney, they work wonders. Just ask Mitt.

I think Newtpoleon is so embarrassed that a woowoo wacko like Santo is beating him that he can't bare to admit it and drop out. Those nice little 5 million checks from Shelly Addelson are supposed to keep Newt in the race to hurt Santo. Addelson is actually supporting Mitts, not Newt but his money talks and its telling Newt to stay in.

Santorum can't afford to have Newt get out of the race. It's the only way they can deny the nomination to Romney.

Santorum asking Newt to get out of the race is like asking Santorum to practice family planning and quit preaching religion on week days!

You're absolutely right. Mr. Gingrich hasn't had this much attention for years and attention, for him, is oxygen.
