Adorable Puma Cubs Escape Danger

Posted: 03/14/2012 2:42 pm

In Managua, Nicaragua, a group of baby pumas were rescued from traps set by local farmers, and are now being raised in captivity until they're strong enough to go back into the wild.

Pumas are venturing out to farm areas to look for food because their natural habitats are being destroyed by urban developments.

Watch the video above, and see more adorable photos of baby animals below!

A newborn Africa elephant lifted his trunk in search of his mother at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The male calf was born at 5:45 a.m. on Monday to Umngani (oom-gah-nee). In this rare moment, the calf stood alone after he had wandered off a few steps, but shortly thereafter his mother, 5-year-old sister Khosi (koh-see), and 2-year-old brother Ingadze (in-Gahd-zee) rushed over to tend to the unnamed calf. Throughout the day the family watched over their newest member, letting him only stray a few feet. The Safari Park is now home to 18 elephants8 adults and 10 youngsters. The adults were rescued in 2003 from the Kingdom of Swaziland, where they faced being culled. The average gestation period for African elephants is 649 days or 22 months. A newborn calf averages 200 to 300 pounds. Calves can be weaned at 2 to 3 years old.

wait.

Without a mom to train them to hunt, especially w/hunting admittedly now more difficult because of urban sprawl, they will likely starve. The well-intended vet may not be doing them any great favor setting them "free" in the wild. Perhaps hee should look for a GOOD children's zoo w/plenty of space for the animals to get plenty of exercise.

It depends on how it's done and how they're raised.

I think these are jaguarundis, the closest relative to the puma or cougar or mountain lion (which are all the same thing.)

This has to be a translation error.

Yeah, I think you're right.

I looked at pictures of both and I think you are right also. Puma cubs are spotted and have the M mark on their faces. Jaguarundi cubs looks more like the ones in the video.

I love stories like this, but hate them at the same time. It's great that those cubs were rescued, but horrible how man's insatiable appetite for money and power continue to destroy Mother Earth, her natural beauty, and sacred forms of life.

Well said.

The story did not mention what happened to the mother of these cubs... which would illustrate another facetof this story. . Good people take care of the orphans that ignorance and greed create.

Please stop reproducing so much, people. You're killing the planet, literally.

It isn't human reproduction that is the problem. It's our need to have skyscrapers and concrete around us to feel at home. Kind of sad, really.

I hope those farmers get caught in a trap one day. That would be sweet.
