Arizona Bill To Instate Armed Militia On Border Progresses To House

Arizona's state legislature is one step closer to passing bill which would create and fund a volunteer armed militia to patrol the border for undocumented immigrants.

On Wednesday morning, the law advanced through the House Military Affairs and Public Safety Committee on a 6-3 party-line vote, according to AZCentral.com. The bill will be vetted in the Rules Committee, and then go on to be debated on the floor of the House in weeks to come.

The state law, known as SB 1083, if passed, would instate the "Arizona Special Missions Unit" with a yearly price tag of $1.4 million dollars to taxpayers. The bill would need to pass through the Arizona State House and Senate, and be signed by Governor Jan Brewer to become law. According to AZCentral.com, if passed, Arizona would be the only state funding a militia devoted to border enforcement.

Governor of Arizona, Jan Brewer, has not yet publicly commented on the pending legislation, but in July of 2011 she signed into law SB 1495, a different bill in order to "free up the Governor of Arizona to establish the Arizona State Guard", in the words of the Arizona State Defense Force Foundation.

The new bill comes less than two years after the passage of Arizona's controversial SB 1070, which requires police in Arizona to question people about their immigration status if they suspect an individual is in the country illegally.

Both bills are part of movement to crack down on illegal immigration.

Proponents of the measures say the federal government has failed to fulfill it's role, and forcing Arizona to take action at the state level.

Republican Arizona Representative David Gowan told AZCentral.com that there is "overwhelming support from his constituents for the measure."

"I don't know how to do it any other way if the federal government doesn't have the will... I think the state's duty is to go down and secure that border so that our citizens are taken care of," he told AZCentral.com.

But some have their doubts. Isabel Garcia, the head of the Arizona Human Rights Coalition, says the measure may spell trouble for her state.

"The state of Arizona is facing a heavy economic crisis, lacks money in the schools and these people are thinking about giving more than a million dollars for a civilian militia," Garcia said in an interview with Efe.

Perhaps we in California can set up a border militia to keep out the Okies and Texans.

Now you are speaking of the actual purpose of the Commerce Clause, which is for the central government to regulate trade between the states. You could NOT keep them out without prompting federal response!

Your ignorance is showing. California already has a militia. Google California State Military Reserve.

Militia or vigilante? If armed they will create some border incident that will make trouble for us. Big mistake Governor Brewer, and you will be held responsible. Not good for you.

Well, one point is, it's too late to try to close the border. the population of america will grow because of the hispanic population. future population growth will be primarily hispanic. Too bad, the fastest growing segment of the population is also the least educated

Arizona is setting up a "militia"? Under Title 32??

Boy. I hope good, "progressive" blue states like California never do this. If they did do something like this, they would probably call the California militia the "California State Military Reserve" and give it co-equal status in the State Military Department with the Army and Air National Guard.

But, luckily, blue California will never do this...

This latest assault on undocumented workers is because on economics. Wh jobs were plentiful and housing prices were flying thru the roof. No one in any state was really yelling about them. Now that unemployment is the norm for many. They have to find a scapegoat for their anger. Most Americans think we have been a friendly country to immigrants either legal or not. During the 1850 and 60's, it was the Irish and Chinese. Then it became the Eastern European Jews and Italians. During WWII it was the Japanese. Now its the Chinese.people from South America and people from the near east. What ever happen to that creed on the Statue of Liberty:

Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.

Notice is does not say anything about being legal or illegal. The more societies and religions we bring into our country the richer we will be.

"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free."

The U-S-A, has & does, since 2001

USCIS grants "vetted" legal immigrants entry into the U-S-A at the rate of 1 legal immigrant each & every 38 seconds of every hour, of every day, of every week, of every month, of every year since 2001.

10 million legal immigrants in the past consecutive 10 years, on their "pathway" to the rights & benefits of Naturalized U.S. Citizenship

Evidence ~ the U-S-A IS taking your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.

What other of the 192 countries in the world do as much?

There is no such thing as competition in helping the poor and down and out. And you prove my point oh so well. You show the type of racism and xenophobia that consumes this culture now.

A large part of the border area is actually indian land, where it is illegal to have firearms on their land, thus a federal crime.

Sorry to say but most of you commenting on this issue need to get your head out of your a***. While all of you are wasting your time and attention on this issue there are hundreds of thousands from around the world screwing you from behind and it looks like you enjoy it. Yes illegals coming in from south of the border is an issue BUT is much less of an issue now than it was 3 or 4 years ago as the statistics can prove it. You all forget that there are bigger treats and illegals coming in from all over the world and by the time you all wake up Mexico will be the least of your problems.
04:27 PM on 03/17/2012
It will be an issue until every ILLEGAL is sent home.
01:39 AM on 03/18/2012
Yes except ILLEGALS are not all from Mexico ding dong… Good luck with that.

Cartel members are crossing into the US to commit robberies and worse.
Drugs are flooding across our unguarded border
Illegals crossing the border and intimidating and threatening ranchers along the border

It would seem that an armed militia on our border is the VERY LEAST we should be doing.

If you aren't an illegal alien, a drug runner/cartel member, you'll have nothing to worry about....

Hey, I'll contribute! The safety of my children is paramount to me. And we must do something to protect ourselves from these criminals - the illegal aliens are still flooding in, hiding out, stealing peoples ID documents, acosting our youth and daring people to say anything to them. Let anyone who wants open borders or amnesty to come here and look at the filth left by the illegal aliens as they sneak across our border and you will see what is sneaking in here - we need drones and heat sensors and stun-gun equipment to turn them back into their own country.

One of the first obligations of a sovereign nation is to control its borders. Helloooo! The people living in the border areas have the right to safety and security, period.
