BYU Mathletes Create Rap Music Video For Pi-Day (VIDEO)

The Brigham Young University has a bit of March Madness and not just for their men's basketball team. The school is also showcasing their powerhouse "Mathletes" squad, a group of students who compete together in national collegiate mathematics competitions.

BYU recently made a "Pi Day music video" showing screaming fans and groupies cheering on their Mathletes. In the song, a chorus of women sing "The BYU Mathletes are coming after ya / When they walk by don't do the wave do the parabola."

BYU's Mathletes do have a few things to brag about; they snagged 2006 national high school math champ Sam Dittmer away from MIT and Stanford, and with Dittmer the 2009 team broke into the top 25 national ranking.

Last season when Dittmer went abroad on a mission, the Mathletes still made it to the Sweet 16, which the school notes is the deepest run of any BYU team since 1979. More recently, they placed third in a national competition against a field of 99 teams, finishing ahead of Duke, Yale and Vanderbilt.

BYU math department chair Tyler Jarvis said in a news release the team stepped up and worked hard to make it happen with Dittmer's absence.

"The BYU Math program was always good," Jarvis said, "but now we are really moving up to the next level, with smart students and excellent faculty coaches."

A girl on the BYU team would have been nice -- even encouraging to half the Mormon population.

IT'S BYU
Only mormonity would say that rappers from BYU were not talking as mormons.
And only mormonity would try to avoid that the mormon machine feels God told it to eff around with others' choices

OK, you are laughingly telling me that a BYU student who gets publicity should nto be assumed to be mormon?

BYU, It will take actual acceptance of racial and religious equality for people to think of you or any of your allied 'institutions' as a non-joke. I'd rather work on that angle than some song and dance # intended to distract outsiders. You can take people out of the twilight zone, but you can't take the twilight zone out of those people....

I don't think this video was trying to prove any social or religious points...ITS ABOUT MATHEMATICIANS!!!!

So you are accusing us of racial inequality? Have you seen our football team? Have you been to BYU? We are actually quite diverse. I have had more students from India and Asia in my math classes than you realize.

As long as it is in good fun, nothing wrong with a religious school trying to be cool.

I am not going to watch white, evangelical, nerds rap. Even if it is good, there is something so fundamentally wrong with it I refuse to watch.

signed a white nerd.

Cosine, secant, square-root, sine, we're the class of '89.

The "mathletes" don't actually rap - they are just in the video. Furthermore - they aren't evangelicals. That's an entirely different religion. O yeah, and they aren't all "white" - one of them is actually asian. So maybe you should get your facts straight before you start bashing.

First of all, it was tongue in cheek.

I was wrong in my usage of Evangelical. I could probably shoehorn Mormons and their requirement to go on a mission in there but I will let it slide and be wrong.

I wasn't "Bashing" them. Poking fun maybe. And being a white former mathlete, I have a free pass to do so. Also, I am married to an Asian, so I am covered there, too. I should have know an asian would be on the team, I am surprised there is only one. And the whites can't rap, holds for asians anyway.

I didn't know they didn't rap, like I said, I didn't watch it, blame the Huffington Post yellow journalist headline writers.

You are just like pi, irrational.
