Cal vs. South Florida: LIVE UPDATES From NCAA Tournament 'First Four' Play-In Game

Matchups in the NCAA Tournament often pit contrasting styles of play against one another. That will be the case in the final game of the 2012 "First Four."

South Florida (20-13, 12-6 Big East)
vs.
California (24-9, 13-5 Pac-12)
9:10 PM ET
University of Dayton Arena
Dayton, Ohio

Dayton is not Pamplona. And these Bulls have no interest in running. The Bulls of South Florida play a disciplined half court defense, holding opponents to just 56.9 points per game (7th in the nation). Each of those points allowed are precious for USF as they score an average of only 59.2 per contest. In order to advance to face No. 5 Temple on Friday, the Bulls will have to slow down a team accustomed to playing at faster pace.

The Bears average better than 70 points per game and rank in the top 20 in both assists and field goal percentage. Despite putting up impressive offensive numbers, Cal is the team in this matchup that has been sputtering lately, losing three of four. That late-season skid combined with the lackluster reputation of the Pac-12 to land Cal in this play-in game despite tallying 24 wins.

SOUTH FLORIDA WINS!

And, somehow, the margin of victory is only 11 points. That hardly does justice to the dominance of the Bulls. What an impressive, thorough effort from start to (nearly) finish.

Gutierrez To The Line

He gets himself to double digits as Cal is forcing the issue in the final moments. After he gets subbed out, Cal pressures and then fouls. Some booing at the antics.

Stuffing The Statbook

Kamp commits another foul to drag this one out. He's fouled out now. The senior had 19 points, and 7 boards. Also, he led the team in fouls.

Really? Cal Foul? Really?

Putting on some pressure and fouling at 3/4 court with 30 seconds left? Oh, wait, it was Kamp. That's ok, then. He actually played like the game was close throughout. Cal is now pressuring full court. They really want to keep this loss looking good on paper. Current score is 63-49. One more hoop and someone could get the wrong idea.

Collins Pulled

South Florida pulls Collins with less than a minute and Bulls looking happy to dribble it out. 40 seconds..

USF Ally-Oop

Following yet another bucket for Kamp, Rudd lobs it to Robertson for a slam.

Ouch

@ franfraschilla :

This might be most embarrassing NCAA game I've witnessed. Cal looking like it'd be bounced in 1st Round of CIT.

Commercial Time

truTV has ad inventory to burn through despite the fact that both teams, the announcers (and several live bloggers) were done with this game a while ago. We're under two minutes but might be a while.

Sick Ball

@ jcrasnick :

PAC 12 basketball fever. Catch it

12-2 Run

File under "too little, too late" but a Crabbe triple pulls the Bears within 18. There are less than 2 and half minutes to go but, hey, this won't look as bad in the Cal record books or some future almanac.
