Celebrities On Twitter: The 19 Most Popular Stars

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 03/15/2012 10:15 am   Updated: 03/15/2012 10:15 am

Pop singer Lady Gaga recently became the first person in history to amass 20 million Twitter followers.

It should come as little surprise that the Queen of Pop shot to the top: the top seven Twitter users with the most followers are all celebrities. President Barack Obama, with around 12.9 million followers, come in eighth place, just behind Kim Kardashian.

According to TwitterCounter, Lady Gaga gains an average of almost 40,000 followers per day. Unlike many of the most-followed celebs on Twitter, Lady Gaga actually follows a good number of people herself. The pop star has 150 followers for every account she follows, whereas Oprah Winfrey has over 200,000 followers for every person she follows.

For many people, our Twitter follower tally really only influences our egos. But for a celebrity, a big Twitter base can mean the opportunity for big money from sponsored tweets.

According to New York Magazine, celebrities are often approached by companies asking them to promote a product in exchange for thousands of dollars. The article reveals that Kim Kardashian gets paid $10,000 for every tweet in which she plugs subscription-based e-commerce company ShoeDazzle. Snoop Dogg, who has shilled for Toyota and has about 7,000 fewer followers than Kardashian, gets $8,000 per tweet.

Twitter allows these paid tweets as long as they are posted manually, writes CBS News, and paid tweets should end with a hashtag like #ad or #spon (short for sponsored) according to the Federal Trade Commission.

Check out Twitter's top 19 most popular users, according to Twitter tracking website Twitaholic, in the slideshow below. Spoiler: they're not all superstars.

Degeneres, Obama, Gaga, Bieber and Spears have the best follow-back ratios. Eminem the worst. What does this all mean? NADA :))

i love twitter, i recently closed my fb account because i found it to be very fake and extremely narcissistic, but on twitter, when u only have 140 characters to share ur thoughts with the world, u tend to be a lot more honest!

Chris Brown on this list made it lose all interest to me. Having being around women beaters my whole life I know they never change. They may not get caught as often but they don't change. For all you women who write (and there are many of you) that Chris Brown can beat them any day I hope you get your wish.

I love twitter - though I think I may split my accounts, so I have one professional & one private.

It's much more news-sensitive than facebook - I often notice news trends on twitter before anywhere else.

It can be more celebrity-driven, not unlike some high school experiences. But your own twitter experience is dictated by who you follow, and what you post.

I tend to follow comedic writers, professional orgs, a couple of pundits, and a cause or two. My postings pretty much reflect that.

Savvy twitterers can have a lot of impact. There are even African villagers who have foiled local robberies by recruiting citizens via twitter to help the victim. Go ahead, google it.

And we've all heard how the riots in the Middle east used twitter to organize...

Ridicule twitter at the risk of sounding like a Luddite. Peace out.

Kim Kardashian is ahead of Obama? That is unbelievable! We should be following the President of our country to see what's going on, instead more people are following a person who does nothing but want to sell you her crap, amazing!
