Crystal, Endangered African Black-Footed Cat, Born in New Orleans (VIDEO)

African Black Footed Kitten

In a breakthrough for the assisted reproduction of endangered species, Crystal, an African black-footed cat, was born early last month at the Audubon Center for Research of Endangered Species in New Orleans, the Times-Picayune reports.

According to the paper, a domestic cat was the surrogate mother for the vitro fertilization which, according to acting director of the center Earle Pope, proves embryos of the endangered species can be successfully implanted into domestic cats.

"Being able to use domestic cats adds another extra dimension to that, being able to produce more," Pope told the Times-Picayune.

The African black-footed cat population is declining due to loss of habitat as well as a decline in population of the prey they hunt, according to the Associated Press.

With only about 10,000 of them left in the wild, the African black-footed cat -- which gets its name from its "distinctive black foot pads" -- is listed as vulnerable to extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.

Boogie, our adopted feral cat turned milkaholic, has black pads... and black lips!

Is he worth anything?

I'm asking because, well, he eats a lot... and the milk consumption is astronomical.

We could use a few extra bucks. Remember, black footed and black lipped as a bonus.

That kitten has that "I do not want to have my picture taken" look. Congratulations to the Audobon Center on their success and I hope that this technique is expanded and used for preserving other critically endangered species.

What an adorable little kitty! I hope this new way of birthing them works out and they can save the species.

Very sweet, very nice, but what's going to happen when their territory and prey are all gone? There will be no room for animals in the future, except domestic animals. Sickening.

How far away are we from.. "do you want a son or daughter? Blue eyes or brown eyes? gay or straight?" The tool used for saving lives and endangered species will be the same tool to eradicate gay people. I don't have an opinion on this... just thinking out loud (so to speak).

that's a pretty stupid comment, considering the article has nothing at all about gene selection.
