Mom Elissa Simonson Gives Birth On Sidewalk Outside Minn. Hospital (VIDEO)

03/14/12 02:48 PM ET  AP

MAPLE GROVE, Minn. -- Elissa Simonson didn't quite make it to a hospital for the birth of her third child. But, she was very close.

Simonson and her husband, Josh, knew the birth of their baby was imminent as they walked up the sidewalk to Maple Grove Hospital, Minn., on Tuesday. But as they neared the entrance, Elissa realized she couldn't make it inside. Josh says his wife got down on her knees next to a bench as he bolted into the hospital to find help.

By the time her husband ran back outside with medical personnel, Elissa had given birth, behind the bench. Mother and baby were rushed inside.

Amazing! Glad to hear everyone is Ok. That would be my nightmare of having a baby outside. I wonder if there will be a discount on the hospital bill. =)

Whew! I was ready for a "no-coverage" story. "Here I am!" is more like it.
I had a baby born in my cab in NYC in the 1970's. Mom pushed, dad caught, and I ran about ten lights until I got a cop. I pointed back, yelled, "BABY!" and floored it. We had an escort after that.
At the ER, one cop went for help, the other took over the back seat.
He got to be Godfather, I got named honorary Uncle. I still get a birthday card from her parents.

Wow, you mean a woman gave birth without doctors, epidurals, stirrups, episiotomy, IV's, monitors, and a "sterile" environment??? How could this be possible? Wait, you mean it CAN be done? Well, someone alert the media! Women can give birth! On their own! Amazing!

My mom was going out when she went into labour with my sister at home. She however manged to hold on until the midwives came. My cousins and I were so excited, we were climbing on crates and boxes to see inside the room, (I was around 5 years old at the time). But just to know that a baby was to be born next to you was exciting, I think this is why I can remember this event so much.

Now I see mothers having babies and their young children are there to see the birth, grandparents, cousins, sisters, brothers and a whole host of family and friends (times have certainly changed).

My aunt gave birth to first and ONLY child on the bedroom floor. She didnt know she was in labor because she just had a mild back ache for a few hours...no other pains. She got up to go to the bathroom and realized the baby's head was out...I ran to the shop for my dad (I was only 5 yrs old) and told him. He ran to the phone and I ran back to my aunt who was picking the baby up from the floor...To this day she swears that my cousin was born at the hospital because she doesn't want people to know she delivered at home...

Why?
09:33 AM on 03/20/2012
If you're asking why she doesn't want people to know she delivered at home its simple...she doesn't want people to think she was too stupid to realize she was in labor and go to the hospital in time for the baby to be born there...
