Railways Minister Dinesh Trivedi announced the first railway fare hike in eight years on March 14 but moments later it was shot down by Congress party leader Mamata Banerjee, who said she would not allow any fare hike.

India's railway network is one of the world's largest, with at least 22 million passengers daily and some 40,000 miles of railway track cut through some of the most densely populated cities.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article stated that India's railway network was used by 14 million passengers daily.
