Tavis Smiley Aims To Put Poverty On 2012 Election Agenda

Tavis

First Posted: 03/15/2012 8:05 am Updated: 03/15/2012 4:11 pm

"Two decades ago we were celebrating what was the Year Of The Woman in '92, and now we're dealing with a war on women in 2012," Tavis Smiley said on a recent afternoon.

Smiley rattles off some numbers.

"Women are much more likely to be poor than men, and more than a million children have fallen into poverty, and more than 500,000 have fallen into extreme povertyā€ -- that is, living on less than $2 a day -- ā€œsince 2010.ā€

Recent census data shows that the number of children who live in extreme poverty has doubled from 1996 to 2011, from 1.4 million to 2.8 million.

To draw attention to this problem, Smiley is moderating a televised symposium Sunday called "Made Visible: Women, Children and Poverty In America" at New York University. Smiley said that he consciously assembled a panel that would feature women from diverse backgrounds since he felt that so much of the recent conversation around women’s issues in America -- he specifically referred to the recent fight in Congress over insuring female contraception -- included few women's voices.

"When it became an issue, all the talking heads who were talking about it were men," he said. "If you're talking about a panel on women in poverty, [then] who best to make the case? I recognize that what I can do is use the platform that I've been blessed to have."

The panelists will include Labor Secretary Hilda Solis; Randi Weingarten, the powerful head of the American Federation of Teachers; the television executive Nely Calan; Suze Orman, the personal finance expert; Faye Wattleton, the former head of Planned Parenthood; Sheryl WuDunn, the Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter; the health advocate Cecelia FireThunder; and the economist Julianne Malveaux. (You can register to attend the event, which is free and will air on C-SPAN, here.)

"These issues at first glance might seem disparate," Smiley said of the panel. "What does contraception have to do with poverty? What does a woman's right to choose have to do with poverty? What do [Rush] Limbaugh's comments [about Sandra Fluke] have to do with poverty? All these dots need to be connected."

Smiley said that he is pushing to make poverty part of the conversation during the election cycle, and he said the Obama administration, of which he's been a fierce critic, has pointedly avoided discussing it. "Last year, President Obama became the first president since 1948 to not mention 'poor' or 'poverty' in the State of the Union address."

Solis has said to push U.S. leaders on poverty, noting that cutting rates in poverty in half was almost achieved following President Lyndon Johnson's launch of the "War on Poverty" nearly half a century ago.

ā€œYou think big, and you challenge America’s leaders to do big things,ā€ Solis said in October 2011. ā€œCutting the poverty rate in half in ten years is something that I too believe we can do.ā€

Smiley was asked whether the omission of poverty -- and the reluctance of elected officials and candidates in general to discuss poverty -- was because poor people don't vote in large enough numbers to make them a bloc worth courting.

"Politicians can speak to the concerns of the middle class, but they never speak to the ranks of the 'perpetually poor,'" he said in response. "That won't happen this year, because the new poor are the former middle class."

The numbers back him up. Last year, the Census reported that half of all Americans now qualify as low income.

Smiley's fierce criticism of Obama, particularly on issues surrounding poverty and black unemployment, have made him persona non grata in many black circles.

But Smiley said that his criticism of Obama from the left is part of the black prophetic tradition -- the practice of preachers and thinkers speaking truth to power and pushing for social justice.

"There's no Abraham Lincoln without Frederick Douglass, there's no F.D.R. without A. Philip Randolph, there's no L.B.J. without M.L.K.," Smiley said. "What makes him a better president is being pushed."

"I do not subscribe to the philosophy [that] a rising tide lifts all boats," Smiley said of President Obama's stated approach to dealing with staggering black unemployment. "On that, I don't think the president is misguided. I think he's wrong. The tide is up on Wall Street, but it's down on Harlem. People think a rising tide lifts, but it also drowns some people."

He said that he is agitating for the Obama administration to make serious inroads on poverty alleviation because the current White House will be the most amenable to the concerns of people of color. The Obama administration was not immediately available for comment on its record in dealing with poverty and black unemployment.

"This moment represents our last, best chance to turn this around," Smiley said.

"There is nobody on the right who presents a better alternative than Barack Obama," he said. "He's the best of the options we have. [But] historians are going to ask: how is it that a moment a black man was president, the bottom was falling out of black America?"

Mr. Smiley, in response your " Get in the Way!" admonition, I asked you
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/lawgrace/get-in-the-way_b_1822623_179987482.html if you will undergird and /or assist citizens (like me) who are already out here ā€˜getting in the way’, doing our best to do something about poverty and troubling social conditions? We need help from people like you because we don’t have the resources that you do, but still, we are NOT talking about the problem, we ARE DOING SOMETHING --AND WE HAVE BEEN doing so for a long time!

Are YOU willing to assist those of us who jeopardize our safety and livelihoods, for the higher good? On the other hand, I cannot speak for others, but I that I have been on the battle field a long time.

May I respectfully state that some people's comments in response to your 'call to action' seems well-founded if all you will do is point out what needs to be done. Even an ā€œaims to put poverty on 2012 election agendaā€ is a nice gesture, but other people will be the ones to implement whatever changes are made.

What I am saying goes back to my original question: Will you help people like me who are DOING things that address poverty conditions you TALK & WRITE about? I can be contacted here: www.lawgrace.org/about/

Wake up people! Poverty is the cancer eating up society. All the ills facing our country can be linked to poverty. Tavis Smiley and Dr Cornel West have trumpeted this horn long before Barak Obama came onto the scene. When Dr King decided to change his tactics from trying to obtain equal right and refocusing on poverty which impact all races that's when they decided that he needed to be terminated. So please give the brother a break.
At this point the poor have no representation in government and need someone to fight the good fight on their behalf. I'm willing to bet that the majority of people posting opinions are just a pay day or two from being at or below the poverty level. Congress is intent on creating "Helter Skelter" their new budget is an example of their vision of the new world order.

Tavis, Tavis, Tavis, you are a die hard snake. Still slithering around trying to push that knife in the President's back. You are a weathly man who makes millions on books, talk show and appearances. We don't need another snake oil salesman telling us there are too many poor people in our community. There is personal anger involved with your constant criticism of our president, and you try to mask it with issues that will take much more that two terms to fix. Yes we the middle class has and is taking major hits, but much of the actions of former President Clinton and George Bush were major players in setting up this scenario. More does need to be done and with a second term more will be done but everything will no be fixed. Our habits have to change along with budgeting for things needed. Many jobs went away and have been phased out completely, they will never come back because of technology and other advances in our world today, every country is dealing with these conditions. Then tag on institutionalized racism. Drugs and violence in our community, we must deal with ourselves, and that is crucial to our survival as well. No one can have a thriving business and safe family life in a neighborhood where killings are taking place all the time. So Tavis how about running for office, getting out there in the trenches and off the podium, you might be taken a lot more seriously.

"...historians are going to ask: how is it that a moment a black man was president, the bottom was falling out of black America?"
THIS JUST IN: The bottom has fallen out of 97% of America, and it appears Mr. Smiley just can't stop taking gratuitous swipes at the president.

I'm gladdened to see that Dr. West's philosophy is starting to rub off on Tavis Smiley. This is a good thing. While I've had my fill of Smiley since he began marginalizing President Obama over some perceived slight in the first few months of the president's term (can you say Petty with a capital P?), I back him 100% on this issue and on his efforts here.

This is a good place for Tavis Smiley to put his energy.

Tavis is a book seller. A virtual one man Barnes and Noble. That is what he does; sell books, useless, valueless, sheets of paper between a thicker paper cover. PERIOD! If I was in as much trouble he says "po black folk" are in, the last thing I would spend my money on is paper. I'd spend it on something to eat.
If he wants to help, run for an office and try to change things, or is he too lazy for that job. That's Heavy Lifting. It takes more to do that than to stand on the side lines and "agitate" or "push the president because that will make him better". I would surmise that if a Man of President Obama brain power can make it to the White House, there is very little he would ever need from Tavis-West that would make hinm "better". I guess this is a good production for Tavis latest poverty road show, just keep it in it's lane and leave POTUS alone, unlike you he has real issues to handle, and not some made up ego driven MLK Jr./Fredrick Douglas wannabe fantasy, of which you seem to be suffering from that you can't seem to shake..

Funny and biting! Ouch! :-) Fanned.
As I made clear, I have little respect left for Mr. Smiley. Let's just hope that his "summit" will somehow generate something worthwhile.

There is apparently a talking point going around that Mr. Smiley's assertions are not legitimate because he hasn't started a poverty relief program, or something.

One could ask the same thing of the commenters repeating this same idea again and again: what have YOU done about the problem?
07:22 PM on 03/18/2012
You guys missed the while point of what i was saying he knows the struggles that were going through at least make sure the bills that we really need get passed not that I'm saying the poor deserve special treatment but equal and what will help the pour prosper that's all I'm saying

People need to wake up. Every government in the world is trying to create jobs for its citizens. There simply not enough high paying jobs to go around. 300 million Americans need to realize that they are not that special that is competing against 7 billion other people on the planet.
Most people in the US have had easy lives when compared most other people on the planet. In essence they are children. All waiting for someone else to solve their problems.

People in the US need to come together to create a new social contract: but I won't hold my breath for that too happen. The US is far too divided. Diveristy does not equal strength.

Back in the day I use to really respect, and look to Tavis as a prime example of leadership. In my opinion he turns out to be a fraud; nothing but a lot of talk with no solutions
08:20 PM on 03/17/2012
Tavis is a joke...he has no measurable outcomes that link his efforts to any improvements (in any area) for poor and minorities. I would like to know if someone could list the 20 programs he has created, their outcomes/success rates...anyone can talk a good game...but where is the accountability, where is the proof....

alot of children are living in poverty not because of the goverment or society, but because of choices their parents have made in life which caused the parents to become "selve povertized" or "victoms of themselves" and now their children suffer because their parents are in selve made poverty from drugs, crime etc.
