Robert Bales Identified As Afghanistan Shooter, U.S. Officials Say

LAKE TAPPS, Wash. — Neighbors of a Washington state man accused of gunning down 16 Afghan women and children in a nighttime rampage describe him as a family man, playing with his two kids outside his home.

Reporters swarmed a neighborhood in a rural, wooded community about 35 miles south of Seattle, as attorney John Henry Browne confirmed the suspect, his client, was Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales from Lake Tapps, Wash.

"I just can't believe Bob's the guy who did this," said Paul Wohlberg, a next-door neighbor who said his family was friends with the Bales. "A good guy got put in the wrong place at the wrong time ... I never thought something like this would happen to him."

Five days after the shooting, a senior U.S. official first confirmed Friday it was Bales, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the investigation into an incident that has roiled relations with Afghanistan. Military officials had said throughout the week that it was policy not to release the name until charges were filed.

Kassie Holland, who lives next door, said she would often see Bales playing with his two kids and the family together at the modern split-level home.

"My reaction is that I'm shocked," she said. "I can't believe it was him. There were no signs. It's really sad. I don't want to believe that he did it."

"He always had a good attitude about being in the service. He was never really angry about it. When I heard him talk, he said, it seemed like, yeah, that's my job. That's what I do. He never expressed a lot of emotion toward it."

Bales has not yet been charged. He was flown Friday from Kuwait and arrived Friday evening at a military detention center at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., the military's only maximum-security prison.

The Army said he was placed in his own cell, not a normal 4-person bay. He will get time out of his cell for hygiene and recreational purposes and religious support, if he desires

An Air Force cargo jet arrived at Kansas City International Airport, about an hour from the military prison, shortly after 9 p.m. Friday. Security was tight, with the terminal completely blocked off, and convoy of unmarked vehicles pulled off the tarmac and out of the airport.

Military officials say the soldier received sniper training and is assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, of the 2nd Infantry Division, which is based at Lewis-McChord and has been dispatched to Iraq three times since 2003.

"I kind of sympathize for him, being gone, being sent over there four times," Beau Britt, who lives across the street. "I can understand he's probably quite wracked mentally, so I just hope that things are justified in court. I hope it goes OK."

Browne said his client was injured twice while deployed to Iraq. He suffered a concussion in a vehicle accident caused by an improvised explosive device, and sustained a battle-related injury requiring surgery that removed part of one foot. Browne said his client was "highly decorated."

Browne said when the 11-year veteran heard he was being sent to Afghanistan late last year, he did not want to go.

"He wasn't thrilled about going on another deployment," Browne said. "He was told he wasn't going back, and then he was told he was going."

Bales and his wife purchased the Lake Tapps home in 2005, according to records. The home was placed on the market Monday, the day after the attack, and was listed at $229,000. Overflowing boxes were piled on the front porch, and a U.S. flag leaned against the siding.

Bales completed 20 hours of anger-management counseling following a 2002 arrest at a Tacoma hotel for investigation of assault. Browne said the case involved a woman other than his wife, whom he married in 2005.

Tacoma Municipal court administrator Yvonne Pettus provided a copy of the court docket, but said clerks could not immediately locate the case file, which is either in archives or destroyed. The docket shows that Bales pleaded not guilty, underwent the 20 hours of anger management treatment, and the case was dismissed.

Records also associated with Bales show that in 2009 he had a hit and run charge dismissed in municipal court in Sumner.

The staff sergeant arrived in Afghanistan in December. On Feb. 1 he was assigned to a base in the Panjwai District, near Kandahar, to work with a village stability force that pairs special operations troops with villagers to help provide neighborhood security.

On March 10, the day before the shooting spree, Browne said the soldier saw his friend's leg blown off. Browne said his client's family provided him with that information, which has not been independently verified.

Officials said Bales was wearing a NATO forces uniform, when he moved through the nearby villages of Alkozai and Balandi, barging into homes and opening fire on those inside, then burning some of the bodies. Nine of those killed were children. Eleven of the dead were from a single family.

A surveillance video captured by a blimp that surveys the area around the base shows that the soldier later approached the south gate of the base with an Afghan shawl covering the weapon in his hands, according to an Afghan official who was shown the footage by his U.S. counterparts.

In the video, the man walks up to the base, lays down the weapon and raises his arms in surrender.

The sergeant's family says they saw no signs of aggression or anger. "They were totally shocked," by accounts of the massacre, Browne said. "He's never said anything antagonistic about Muslims. He's in general very mild-mannered."

The lawyer denied reports that the soldier had marital problems, saying he and his wife have a solid relationship.

Alissa Cinkovich, 45, has lived in the neighborhood for seven years, and said it was scary that he was living nearby.

"I would like to think he just went off his rocker because of the war," Cinkovich said.

In a Cincinnati suburb, police were stationed around the home of someone believed to be a relative of Bales. Reporters were given a statement by police and encouraged not approach homes in the quiet Evendale neighborhood.

One police vehicle was parked on the block, while additional officers patrolled the area.

In a statement, Evendale Police Chief Niel Korte said the department was aware of information that a relative of the soldier may reside in the town. He believed that identifying the resident or address "may present a threat to their physical safety."

The identification of the shooter quickly elicited a variety of reactions throughout Twitter. Some used social media to condemn Bales and called him a terrorist. Others called him a war hero who should not have been deployed to Afghanistan after serving three tours in Iraq. Others offered prayers for him and his family.

It seems to be a long time before one sees the "murderer in the midst" of a healthy community.
The "family man," the honorable, if shaky marriage, is slow to disappear, expecially when the killer has lead a low-keyed life, in the states. His wife, would of course support her husband. What else could she do?--either than be considered a pariah herself? He destroyed himself; out of sight of this community, even though he was a criminal in that sociey himself. He covered himself well, putting forth a "good appearance" where he had to live. Then, lo, it all hits the fan and no one can really believe it. How could they? --they were'nt there! Mr Hyde has hidden himself as long as he and Mr. Browne could. Amazing the U.S.government would put out reparations of $860,000 for the killed, if they did not have credible evidence itself. Still, we have the blind naysayers that "cannot believe it." Poor fools. Wait till the trial, even if a "show trial,"
facts have a way of being unable to be hidden.

30 years ago, almost every American boasted that we lived in the "Greatest Coubtry on Earth!". At the time, it would have been the truth.

Since corporatocracy took away our wealth, freedom and the coubtry's soul, this country turned into a large, highly-weaponized version of Somalia only with Nazi Germany's aggression.

Those wielding power in this country not only terrorize and torment people of foreign lands, - they treat their own population like we're slaves or lab animals.

You can converse with peers from ANY other industrialized country and realize immediately that Americans have far worse than all.

1950-1980 - the New Deal. We need to get back to that.

What this man did is HORRIBLE! only he knows exactly what was on his mind at that time. Two things we need to think about....those soldiers that go to Iraq or Afghanistan are subjected to things that we cannot imagine. When we get a story...do you really think we get a truthful whole story? We can sit here and say "I'd do this or do that" but we really don't have a clue as to what we'd really do. I've heard nighmare stories about the Middle East. From some of the soldiers that were there. I had never ever imagined what they were seeing and how it felt to be on watch and not know who was friend or foe. Over there they do not value life like we do. They wouldn't think twice about putting an IED in the middle of the street where anyone could trigger it even if it's their own people just as long as it kills an American. Not to mention strapping bombs on women and children. I'm not saying for one minute what this guy did is anywhere close to being right. I just don't think we should judge this man on what little we actually know.

"....those soldiers that go to Iraq or Afghanistan are subjected to things that we cannot imagine. .."

And let's just imagine about the people and the villagers who actually have to live there and who are confronted with "joe sixpack" every day.

No wonder they "hate your freedoms".

No idea why the media seems transfixed to focus on one killer when there is evidence more than one individual was involved... What's going on here?

If the US military's record such matters remains consistent, Bales will receive minimal punishment.

Frankly, I'm tired of hearing how we should understand when American soldiers massacre civilians or urinate on corpses of the enemy or collect body parts of unarmed civilians as trophies or come home and murder their wives, girlfriends, children, but we are not called upon to understand how Afghan civilians might be angry at having their families killed and their homes invaded and occupied and how they might want to strike back against what they perceive as a force of foreign invaders. I know some Afghan civilians don't want American troops to leave because they fear what will happen when they're gone, and I know most American soldiers don't behave in these ways, but it's dishonest to justify the deplorable behavior of one side and condemn the deplorable behavior on the other side when we've caused many problems we now experience. Imagine a foreign country occupying the US. Do you think that citizens wouldn't band together and bomb or shoot them or do any of the things that the Afghans are doing? Yet, we would call our side heroes and their side the enemy.

Bales is a criminal, not a hero. It's tragic he has PTSD like many soldiers and this contributed to his violence. But thousands of US soldiers suffer from PTSD and don't murder children. Ultimately, that is still a choice Bales made, and he is a criminal because of the choice he made.

Ah, the Bias Media . 27 people died in a car bomb in Syria, let`s see how long that story goes on in the News ?
Obama and Clinton love to get on our Military .
What happened in Afghanistan is tragic, hopefully the soldier will get help . But for Obama and Clinton to apologize, as if it was America`s fault, B.S. !
Pull out troops out, stop all Visas from this nation .Cut all Aid, except for food and medicine .
Most importantly, rid Washington of Obama, Clinton, Holder and Napolitano .
We will be a safer nation, without these clowns .
10:08 AM on 03/18/2012
Well. It was an American Soldier and to avoid further misunderstanding, it is apt and appropriate to apologize. When will Americans stop being so obstinate. There is nothing wrong in apologizing, the soldier who killed these afghans is after all an American. And I don't think you really expect Syrians apologizing to the Syrians for killing themselves, do you???

"He" seems to be speaking for the American people and making comments that we are a certain way. I did not vote for him and he does not speak for me.Don't you just love it when others "think" they can read your mind? We are there to do a job it's not the whole countries fault that this fellow did what he did. I think an apology from him would be sufficient. I'm just thankful that Clinton isn't sitting in the white house now. It's bad enough the way it is.

This soldier as deluded as he was in his actions should plead "temporay insanity" due to battlefield trauma and stress...eliminating the death penalty. If I were an officer on this military court, I would consider mercy for all they had to endure as they did in Vietnam. 58,000 sacrificed for nothing...Afganistan has the stench of that right now.

Pull out and let them murder themselves as they have done for centuries...harsh but true.

Why was he still in the Army after having surgery that removed half of his foot??? He should have been retired from the Army and had been replaced with someone much healthier. I feel the Army needs to take some responsibility for his mental state by sending him back to Afghanistan
for the 4th time with just half a foot.

Where do you get "half a foot"? His lawyers has stated that he lost *part* of a foot in Iraq, but that could frankly mean he lost his pinky toe - doesn't necessarily mean it was a permanently debilitating injury.

From today's Seattle Times:

"Tim Burgess, who lives in the adjoining half of the duplex, said he got to know Bales when he moved into the house before the couple married. At the time, Bales limped because of a foot injury he suffered in his first deployment in Iraq, and he made routine visits to a rehabilitation center, Burgess said. But Bales spoke eagerly of returning to Iraq.

"He was looking forward to getting his health back and going back after his foot got better," Burgess said. "He wanted to be a soldier. That's what he lived for. He just wanted to go back. That was his goal, to get healthy and go back.""

Bales was very upset on 911 and joined the service as a result. What's missing from this whole discussion is the issue of the mass torture and massacre of US civilians by the Taliban supported Al Qaeda on 911. The Taliban should understand, as well as the Afghanistan population that Americans were, well, upset by this war crime committed against them. I think this whole issue is one sided and that Afghans should be reminded what and who brought this war down upon their heads.

Bales was wrong to kill the Afghan civilians regardless of the circumstance. We should not allow soldiers and ordinary citizens to defend the country as vigilantes. This has serious consequences than their original intent.
09:32 AM on 03/18/2012
You're right. That justifies the murder of 9 children, 4 of whom were little girls under six. It's one-sided to look at just the 16 people this hero murdered after creeping into their homes. And it's one sided to look at the fact that the US has been occupying Afghanistan and killing its civilians for 10 years--killing them and apologizing, abusing them and apologizing. We need to look at the fact that the Taliban protected Osama bin Laden 11 years ago but did not actively participate in 9-11. It's also looking at the issue from one side to observe that six times as many Afghan civilians have died in this conflict than people died in the 9-11 attacks.

For a moment, I just want to close my eyes and try to think if any of the children that were shot in their heads had anything to do with 9/11? Are the victims going to be represented if a trial is held which I doubt will happen. It does not take a group of expert lawyers to convince a judge that the man is incompetent to stand trial.
