CAIRO, March 18 (Reuters) - Christians gathered on Sunday to pay final respects to Pope Shenouda III, who sought to soothe sectarian tension in his four decades atop Egypt's Orthodox Church but saw increasing flareups in the majority Muslim nation in the last months of his life.

Friction has worsened since President Hosni Mubarak, who suppressed Islamists, was ousted last year. Since then Shenouda, who died on Saturday aged 88, often called for harmony and regularly met Muslim and other leaders.

Christians, who comprise about a tenth of Egypt's 80 million people, have long complained of discrimination and in the past year stepped up protests, which included calls for new rules that would make it as easy to build a church as a mosque.

Shenouda had served as the 117th Pope of Alexandria since November 1971, leading the Orthodox community who make up most of Egypt's Christians. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, Egyptian state media reported.

U.S. President Barack Obama offered his condolences and Pope Benedict, leader of the world's Roman Catholics, offered prayers after being informed of his death.

Thousands of Christians queued in Cairo's Abbasiya district overnight and on Sunday morning at the cathedral where Shenouda's body was initially laid in a coffin and later seated on a ceremonial throne wearing gold and red embroidered religious vestments, a golden mitre on his head and holding a gold-topped staff.

He was popular among many of Egypt's Christians even outside the Orthodox Church, as well as among many Muslims. However, some Christian activists said Shenouda should have pushed the state harder to secure more rights for Christians.

In one phrase Shenouda often repeated and which was also cited in newspapers on Sunday, he would say: "Egypt is not a nation we live in, rather it is a nation that lives in us."

The burial is expected to take place at the Wadi el Natrun monastery in the desert northwest of Cairo, where the late pope had requested he be buried.

Shenouda was banished to Wadi el Natrun monastery in 1981 by then-President Anwar Sadat after he criticised the government's handling of an Islamic insurgency in the 1970s and Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel.

Under Mubarak's rule, relations between the government and the Coptic church were generally smooth, with the pope portrayed in state media as a symbol of religious harmony, despite occasional outbreaks of sectarian violence.

RELIGIOUS DIALOGUE

"We will remember Pope Shenouda III as a man of deep faith, a leader of a great faith, and an advocate for unity and reconciliation," the U.S. president said in a statement issued by the White House.

Obama said Shenouda had been committed to national unity and was "a beloved leader of Egypt's Coptic Christians and an advocate for tolerance and religious dialogue."

Shenouda publicly supported Mubarak during his last days and before Mubarak's ouster by a popular uprising on Feb. 2011, a move that drew some criticism from some members of his church who joined the protests that ousted the president.

Some Muslim leaders also backed Mubarak in his last days.

Christians have long complained about rules that put more restrictions on building a church than a mosque and also say they have been discriminated against in the workplace.

Christians have accused hardline Islamists of attacking churches and said the authorities have failed to step in to protect them, although experts say some recent incidents have been fuelled by local grudges as well as sectarian tensions.

Such violence has for years been sparked by disputes ranging from rows over church building to inter-faith romances.

The head of Egypt's ruling military council, Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, granted Christians working in state institutions three days mourning, state media reported.

Bishop Bakhomious, head of the church of Bahaira, a district in the Nile Delta north of Cairo, will temporally hold the post of pope for two months until a new leader is elected.

Egyptian media described the procedure for choosing a new pope as one based on a system of voting by board members of the church's city councils. The councils vote on three preferred candidates, and the final choice is made when a name is picked out of a box by a young child, the media said. (Editing by Edmund Blair and Mark Heinrich)

I thought it was a good thing when a christian dies. isn't that what they ultimately want, to be with God. What better thing could happen for them. leave the evil world and live with the perfect creator in perfect health. they should all rejoice if they truly believe it is wonderful to be with god.

This world is so lost in it's spiritual journey. And our stewardship of this one time paradise - cannot only be stated without the word "POOR" before the word stewardship.

God's point -- I am sure it was stated in Eden to our original parents also: "Man is not fit to guide even his own footsteps.".....And don't we see the truth of those words captured in scripture everyday 24/7 across the 4 corners of the world? In fact, I do not think we as a people can do anything right -- sad but true! For everything has a high poisoning dosage of greed in the ingredients in all of man's recipes for life on earth.

Thank God for his gift of mercy - the shed blood of our Savior to undeserving man! For in him Jesus the Messiah, and Mankind's Savior -- man has the opportunity for everlasting life, on a restored earth, under God Almighty Yahweh's (aka Jehovah, Allah) eternal reign!

The worship of images and relics, the invocation of saints, and the exaltation of the pope are devices of Satan to attract the minds of people from God and from His Son.
To accomplish their ruin, he endeavers to turn their attention from Him who alone they can find salvation.
He will direct them from any object that can be substituted for the One who has said, " Come unto Me, all ye that labor, and I will give you rest" Mt. 11;28

Requieset in Pacem,Peace be upon him.Peace to all devout MUSLIMS ,practicing JEWS and struggling CHRISTIANS.I do not believe in eulogies except for the SAINTED but surely from my personal experience, this "POPE"meets to a T the definition of a CHRISTIAN,We join the POPE of ROME and all mankind of every religion in mourning the death of ONE WHO taught us to love one another.MUSLIMS, JEWS and CHRISTIANS ,can live, and must live together in the HOLY OBSERVANCE of God`s LAWS.Although it does matter somewhat we call HIM (Almighty GOD)what is important is that we call on HIM to HIM and with HIM,as His Beatitude the POPE SHENOUDA has taught all of us..Allah be willing DEUS VULT!This is a personal observation but I hope and pray the sentiment to be someday universal with our MESSIAH and the achieved HOLY KINGDOM or Caliphate of the devout------.Ordained Alexandrian.

I find this sort of manic rambling very common in devout religious posters. It's very difficult to read, there is a lack of spacing, comma usage, and much unneeded capitalization.

No, really, I see it all the time!

For those people commenting on the fine garments, and the bejeweled hat - just a little background for you. This man was a scholar who decided to leave the world and become a monk. He left the monastery and went to live in the desert , in a cave, as a hermit for 6 years, to devote his life fully to God. He was summoned by the last Coptic Pope Kyrillos VI to leave the desert and serve his people. Please keep that in mind as you imply that he was in any way materialistic or cared more for the trappings of his position as the spiritual leader of the oldest Christian religion in the world. Alas, Respect and open-mindedness doesn't feel as good as cynicism and mockery

Dear God, there's more than one Pope? Hide the children.

WHY AREN'T THEY PARTYING? Catholics and christians worship death and believe this life is just rehearsal for something better, perfect, fantastically decorated. How selfish of them.

So many men sitting on thrones dressed in fine garments ruling over others. Just how Jesus would have wanted it?
04:30 PM on 03/23/2012
Yeah, actually. That's how he set up his kingdom.

The position that he held could only have been held by a man of deep faith, great wisdom, and greater courage. The world should mourn the loss of any man such as this. Even not knowing much about this fine man I can only admire his constancy and hope another such man can be found to fill his role. We need such men irregardless of their specific religions, because only such giants can overcome the limits of their religions.

There were once 12 patriarchs in Christianity. Each could be called a Pope, as they were equals. Titles differed depending on the sect.

Correct! Pope = papa = Pater Patris or Father of Fathers. A pope is the "first among equals" when gathered with other patriarchs or bishops in synod. The Coptic pope is head of the See of St. Mark as the Catholic pope heads the See of St. Peter.
