Conservative leader Morton Blackwell, a veteran of the 1976 convention and a member of the Republican National Committee’s rule-making body, told TheDC there’s no real way to predict what would happen if a nominee were not chosen on the first ballot.

“Understand that the most important factor in deciding how people vote on the second ballot is their personal preferences,” he told TheDC. “People are going to vote for whom they think is best. Some of them could be influenced by a senator, a governor, a member of Congress, a state party leader.”

“I’m sure a lot of people are going to try to exercise influence,” he added, “but people get there, they went through the arduous process of becoming delegates. They pay big money to make the trip, and for some people that is a major expense. They’re going to want the guy they think is the right one, and they probably won’t be as malleable as people might suggest.”

If you think that the republican primary process has been a circus so far, you haven't seen nothing yet. The republican convention coming up in Tampa this summer will be the roman circus to end all circuses, complete with gladiators fighting to the death, Sarah Palin strutting her stuff, and wild-eyed radicals from every state trying to out-shout down any and all calls for reason.
The torn and tattered remains of the contestants will be paraded around the multiple circus rings while conservative commentators spin tales of glory in anticipation of the coming battle with the dark knight and his evil liberal army whose ranks have been swollen by all of the women that the republicans have attacked in their preparation for defeat.

Listening to the cannibalistic attacks made upon one another by the dubious crop of Republican presidential aspirants, it would be hard to conclude that any of them are sufficiently capable or qualified to hold the highest office in the land. So, assuming that the nomination isn’t brokered out to some other non-Romney at the GOP convention, I’ll be interested to hear how the losing candidates transform their scathing attacks into whole-hearted support for the chosen one. Given how fast and loose they’ve been playing with the truth throughout the campaign, I’m guessing they’ll opt for the classic John Kyl strategy, explaining that their remarks were not intended to be factual statements.
