Sweet 16: UNC, Kentucky, Michigan State Among 14 Teams From Major Conferences Remaining

By EDDIE PELLS 03/18/12 11:46 PM ET AP

Sweet 16 Teams Kentucky
LOUISVILLE, KY - MARCH 17: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist #14 of the Kentucky Wildcats reacts in the first half against the Iowa State Cyclones.

So much for the little guys.

Instead of parlaying an historic day of upsets into a second weekend filled with small schools, the NCAA tournament now looks like a who's-who of major college programs.

All but two of the 16 teams in the regional semifinals will be from power conferences. The lone exceptions are Xavier, which is hardly a stranger to this kind of run, and Ohio University, a big school with a small, but no longer unknown, basketball program.

According to STATS, this will be the first time since 2003 that 14 teams from the six major conferences have made the Sweet 16.

Among next week's matchups:

_No. 1 Kentucky vs. No. 4 Indiana and No. 3 Baylor vs. No. 10 Xavier in the South; No. 1 Syracuse vs. No. 4 Wisconsin in the East; No. 1 North Carolina vs. No. 13 Ohio and No. 2 Kansas vs. No. 11 North Carolina State in the Midwest; and No. 1 Michigan State vs. No. 4 Louisville and No. 3 Marquette vs. No. 7 Florida out West.

Take the two mid-majors out of that mix and you're talking a combined 87 Final Four appearances and 31 national titles.

While two No. 2 seeds, Duke and Missouri, fell to 15s Lehigh and Norfolk State on a history-making second round Friday, all four No. 1s got through the first week safely – the first time that's happened since 2009. A year before that, all four top-seeded teams made it to the Final Four for the only time.

Could happen again this year, though Carolina will have to overcome an injury to a key player to get there.

The Tar Heels defeated Creighton 87-73, but point guard Kendall Marshall broke his right (non-shooting) wrist.

"You can ask any question you want, but I just told you all we know," Tar Heels coach Roy Williams said when announcing the injury. "We do not know anything else."

Despite the dearth of small programs – such as the Butlers and VCUs and George Masons that have crashed the Final Four over the last decade – there will be a fair share of double-digit seeds and underdogs.

That list starts with No. 11 seed North Carolina State, the program that pretty much set the standard for March Madness upsets and gave us one of the most memorable moments in college sports: Coach Jim Valvano running around the floor at The Pit, looking for someone to hug after Lorenzo Charles grabbed Dereck Whittenburg's air ball and put it in at the buzzer for an upset over powerhouse Houston.

That was in 1983. In 2012, the Wolfpack snuck in as one of the last teams on the bubble. On Sunday, they upset No. 3 Georgetown 66-63 to make it to the Midwest Regional, where they'll play Kansas.

"We always talk about we have such great history at NC State, but it's also time to build some new history," coach Mark Gottfried said.

No. 10 Xavier comes from the Atlantic-10, the closest thing to a power conference without actually being one. This is the fourth Sweet 16 appearance in the last five years for the Musketeers, who made their biggest news this season with an ugly brawl against crosstown rival Cincinnati that led to suspensions and knocked the team out of whack.

"The only guys that know what we went through were the guys who were in the locker room," coach Chris Mack said. "Some would say it's self-inflicted, but I know we have great kids. And I'm really proud of them today."

Then, of course, there's Ohio – enrollment 17,000 but with a basketball program that has, well, basically nothing in common with that better-known behemoth about 75 miles away, Ohio State.

The Buckeyes are also still alive in the tournament, with a game against either Florida State or Cincinnati up next. But right now, the talk of the tournament – the biggest underdogs left – are the Bobcats.

"I do think our guys have a chip on their shoulder," Ohio coach John Groce said. "I think our guys look forward to playing on the big stage against quality competition."

So much pressure on UK to win it all, I hope this doesn't get those "kids." Every year, around this time, I hear the wonderful slanders and misguided-misinformed accusations about Coach Cal. Yeah, I'm sure he knew that Derrick Rose cheated and Marcus Camby was getting paid to play or whatever trivial accusations they've made against him. What, you mean Coach Cal doesn't follow his players around 24hrs a day, 7 days a week, and doesn't have their taxes audited and doesn't proof-read all their homework...woah, he's TOTALLY to blame for the actions of a young kid. Just like Jim Tressel right? GO CATS!

Kendall Marshall did not break his right wrist; Coach McDermott, who should be removed from NCAA coaching, sent his players onto the floor with a program of deliberate injury to UNC players. So Marshall's wrist was broken by the player who fouled him. They hacked at Henson's injured wrist for the entire game. The foul on Marshall had no attempt on the ball; it was already released when the Creighton player deliberately shoved Marshall in the upper lest chest and sent him not just falling, but spinning to the floor. I have to wonder what kind of bounty the coach offered his players. I have seldom seen such a dirty game played by any team in the NCAA. This was a truly disgusting spectacle offered by Creighton.  Shame on them, players and coach alike.

UK fan here,,.but I agree, there should be some sanction. I recall John Cheney's goon squads at Temple doing something similar to chris webber and the more talented Michigan team in the tournament

I recall the same about the Temple MIchigan mashup. Not every physical dominance is played wrongly though. I remember an Arkansas UNC matchup in the tournament - I think J.R. Reid was on that UNC team - where the Hogs just manhandled the Heels, but with fair play and no effort to do physical harm. It was simply men against boys. Harm is done to the game itself when headhunting becomes the object. Your guys have looked terrific all year long.  Calipari is one of the three or four best coaches of the past 20 years. The in season wins against Indiana and UNC were telling. I favor KY to win it all now. Best wishes to you and the team.

You should watch the 1996 Championship game where Kentucky was basically allowed to mug John Wallace into submission. Had the game been called fairly, Syracuse would have at least been closer at the end if not Champs.

Saw the game and completely agree. That one is on the referee(s), and we see plenty of referee bias, though it is literally impossible to prove. What bothers me is when evidence indicates that coaches have initiated an actual program of physical attacks intending injury to opposing players, as the Saints have done and been caught at. In the case of this year's Creighton team, I would submit that the game tapes show such a program in effect. It is maddening to fans when sports are corrupted by unfair or illegal practices. These are games, after all. But when the money god enters the arena all prior bets and rules are in the wind. Thanks for the reply. I spent years in the music business and I wish you the best. Fanned for solidarity.

You have to really cheer for Kentucky because it's like having a bunch of seniors on the team who are looking for their last chance at a championship before leaving the college-level.

NBA-practice squad. This one year requirement is such a joke. If it didn't exist, Calipari wouldn't have any success. Here's hoping THESE wins don't get taken away from the school.

Samson doesn't hold a candle to the "Teflon Don" Calipari.
05:42 PM on 03/19/2012
Amen to that. I'm not even sure Calipari even really coaches. He just gives a bunch of guys who could play in the NBA out of high school a place to play for a year, and lets them do what they want. They're practically Bic razors — Rose (at Memphis), Wall, Davis, etc. But eventually that kind of talent yields to experience, evidence being, Calipari, for all his recruiting acumen, has yet to win a national championship and has had to vacate two Final Four runs.

Which is why in only a couple years, we've already made it to the elite 8 and final four? So he was supposed to win a championship already in like 4yrs, that's totally realistic right? How are you blaming him for the one-n-doners, when David Stern was the individual who initiated that rule. So he gets the best talent, every year, and that's his fault? Why you mad bro?

Kansas just got lucky at the end. Purdue should have been in there too.

Kansas didn't get lucky--they just started actually playing in the last five minutes. They had that skill all along, they were just asleep for most of the game.

Are you suggesting new rules about "winning"? Like the team who led the game until the last minute and then lost, should be the winner? That was unlucky for Purdue, who played extraordinarily well. But it was Kansas who played well enough
to keep afloat.
