Apple Rumors: The iPhone 5, A New MacBook Air, The End Of MacBook Pro, And More

First Posted: 03/19/2012 2:30 pm   Updated: 03/19/2012 2:30 pm

Every week the numerous blogs covering the machinations of the Apple empire float tons of unconfirmed rumors, futuristic speculation and questionably-sourced reports on what the company might be unveiling in the near or distant future. Let's take a look back at what the Mac blogs were excited about during the week of February 5 - 11. Check out our last edition of Apple rumors here, and for all the latest follow me on Twitter right here.

Perhaps you have heard of the myth of Sisyphus? Sisyphus was a King of Corinth who was punished to push an enormous stone up a hill, only to have it roll back down that hill; he would then have to push it up the hill again. He repeated this tedious, back-breaking task into eternity: Push the stone up, watch it fall down, push the stone up, watch it fall down, push the stone up, watch it fall down.

Speaking of which: With the latest iPad having been unveiled, let us now move on to iPhone rumors! Unverified reports about this iPhone have been swirling for a good 13 months now, making them, in some sense, more successful than any relationship I've ever been in. Many still think that this iPhone, possibly to be released in October or thereabouts, will be the slimmer, lighter, 4-inch iPhone that was rumored to come out last October. (It didn't, as you'll recall -- the iPhone 4S has a 3.5-inch display and is not a 4G device, no matter what AT&T tells you).

Now, add another rumor to the pile: Taiwanese publication DigiTimes claims that Apple's next iPhone will be 4G LTE enabled, a safer bet given that the iPad 3 new iPad comes with the option for 4G. 4G is perhaps more important for the iPhone than it is for the iPad, given the range of non-WiFi locations we use it in -- Apple has been battling design constraints and battery problems to get its smartphone 4G-equipped.

Given the prevalence of faster 4G smartphones, and the presence of 4G LTE on the latset iPad, I'd be very surprised if the next iPhone didn't follow the iPad 3 into 4G world.

Speaking of the iPad 3: You're probably sick of reading about it (actually, probably not, if you clicked on this and made it this far), but if you AREN'T, then you will be incredibly pleased to know that...

It is amazing how many people proclaim that their MAC's do not get virus's! Those who are still in denial MUST read the follow, about a brand new MAC VIRUS in the wild!

NEWS FLASH! NEW MAC VIRUS MAKING THE ROUNDS!

NEW MAC VIRUS information here: --->

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/46514784/ns/technology_and_science-security/t/new-flashback-trojan-swipes-mac-passwords/

A new target for the ill-informed of the world, targeted at those who THINK their MAC is safe!

Perhaps you should educate yourself on what a Virus is before posting naive comments for all the world to see. First off, a trojan is NOT a self propogating "virus", as you would probably like anyone dumb enough to believe. Secondly, one has to first forgoe enabling password protection, and then secondly just blindly click on any type of GUI without inspection. Unfortunately, most ex-Windows users are the types to do just such a thing. Those who were careless before switching to OS X, are likely still careless and clueless. I'm guessing you're in that group, or you'd know better than to post such drivel. And if you do actually know better, then you should be ashamed to be spreading fear rather than educating those whom don't know better.

Sorry, fanboy.....but actually I own a computer repair business, and have for over 10 years. I DO know what I am talking about, and I did NOT write the article in question. So if you have another stupid bone to pick with the experts on computers, kindly address it to the authors.

A MAC CAN be infected, just as you said....by stupid users (now including MAC users) doing stupid things.

Before you launch attacks, tell me again...just what makes you so durned sure? You have added NOTHING to the conversation to prove yourself more knowledgeable, so just drop it. Personal attacks are for dogs!

I hope they actually kill the mac book pros. I want to see videos of them being shot and blown up and maybe eaten by goats. I could never afford their computers.

>No word on how the hell I'm supposed to load my old copies of Myst without that optical drive

Uninformed or loss of credibility? The MacBook Air has a slim $99 accessory optical drive as an optional purchase.

4GB max and 1.7 max cpu on the air make it very unattractive for me as a fulltime notebook for what I do.

If Apple wants to take away the Mac Pro for the lite and fluffy air models they best be willing to pump up the available configurations to 8GB memory and i7 CPU's ..

Yeah, I wouldn't care much for this change. Faster I7 processors, dedicated graphics, and more memory would be required. I do like the solid state storage, but would want 512gb. (of course, you can get that with MacBook Pro as well) and SD slot. All this assumes that it would come with 15' in screen. Here is the configuration I would purchase if available:
15' screen
2.4ghz I7 processor
8+ GB ram
512GB solid state drive
AMD 6770M video (or better)
Thunderbolt port to connect to existing RAID external storage. I am sure this won't be an issue because the existing Macbook Air has it
Otherwise, I might be purchasing some more Mac Book Pro's very soon if it looks like I can't get a similar configuration. Oh well :)

I love my Macbook Air more than anything else I have ever had in my life. It is fantastic. All they need to have is an 11 inch Air that has an SD card reader and it would be perfect.

Hopefully a super-sized iPhone will mean a super-sized iPod Touch. That will determine if I replace my aging unit with a Android Walkman or a Galaxy Player.

4G/LTE is a given now that the iPad has made the jump. I have an iPad with ATT and I'm getting great speeds although LTE is limited. I turned it off and got better signal strength on 4G and the difference in speed was only about 4 mbps.

My reactions:

1.  The new iPhone will come out almost exactly one year after the iPhone 4s.  Of course it will offer 4G LTE.  What else will it offer is a much bigger question.  I am guessing it will finally offer a new physical design because it will need a bigger battery and a slight change to the antenna. I am guessing it will go with a slightly larger screen, perhaps 4 inches, because that will be how they will increase the battery size without making the phone much thicker.  The iPhone 3gs will be discontinued with the iPhone 4 becoming the new 'free' phone.

2.  There will be no iPad mini, ever.  Steve Jobs was perhaps willing to change his mind about something (although it was rare) but now nobody at Apple would dare to presume to change Steve Jobs' mind.  Steve said it was dumb.  It will never happen.

3.  Apple TV will be a standard TV with the processor board of the new Apple TV box built in.  Much like the current Apple TV it will make no sense for anybody who is not already completely engaged in the Apple ecosystem.  Those who already are immersed in the Apple Ecosystem and have not purchased the separate Apple TV box wil buy it.

4.  The lines between the Air and Pro lines will disappear.  In keeping with their new push for semantic purity they will just be called The New MacBook.  Arguments about which killed which will be a matter of semantics only.  All with have the thin wedge appearance of the Air but the thickest point of the larger screen versions may be a little thicker than the current Air.   Internal optical drives will disappear in favor of a new line of thunderbolt connected DVD and Blu-Ray drives.  Some of the larger screen Macbooks that will include traditional. hard disks because the cost per gigabyte is still so much lower.  Top end models of the larger screen Macbooks will support both a small flash drive for the OS and a traditional hard disk for the data.
08:54 PM on 03/19/2012
Well the larger screen also increases the battery requirements as well and most likely the biggest battery hog of them all when its on.

Such is the world full of trade-offs.  Still i will stick with my prediction that the iPhone 5 will have a 4 or 4 1/2 inch AMOLED screen.

Add on thunderbolt drives optical or other = cumbersome accessories to carry in a bag. :(

Never said that life was perfect, but most users have a bag anyway and the need to accommodate the big flat disk is the thing that would prevent having the tapered profile that people like with the Air.
