Bear Bites Terri Gurley's Butt While She Walked Dog In Longwood, Florida

Posted: 03/19/2012 1:27 pm Updated: 03/19/2012 1:29 pm

A 300-pound black bear bit a woman in the butt Friday morning while she was walking her dog.

Luckily, Terri Gurley of Florida lived to grin and bare it.

Gurley, 57, was walking her dog in Longwood -- while also taking out the trash -- when she noticed the beast near a trash bin, according to WKMG. Her dog confronted the bear.

"The dog was trying to go at her and I'm pulling her back, trying to get away," Gurley told the station. "I was walking backwards and I tripped and I fell, hitting my head."

She was trying to scramble back to her feet when the bear came right up behind her, shadowed by its cub.

"All I can think of is how terrifying it is to look and it's right there," she said. "Not knowing what she's gonna do."

That's when the bear chomped on her behind.

Luckily, Gurley's "screaming" may have scared the goliath away, according to WESH-TV. She was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries and released a short time later.

Gurley has several theories as to why the bear tried to attack her. First, she thought it may have been spooked by her dog, MSNBC reported. But she later realized that the bear may have just been defending its cub, or interested in the trash she was carrying.

Gurley's home is close to the Wekiva River and a state forest. Forest officials told the station that they've set up bear traps in the area and that the bear who bit Gurley will be euthanized if it is caught.

Ok so the mother bear does what mother bears (and almost all other mothers) do....defending her baby....and they want to euthanize her for it?

This is a messed up planet.

Too darn bad some people can't learn from mommy bears instinctive nature to protect her cubs..........it's sad these days how we infringe on habitats ........just last week I stopped and took pics of a Nutria......he was white as snow, absolutely beautiful, sitting on the grass by the side walk nibbling........ and his habitat, a mere few cubic square feet completely sorrounded by a concrete jungle located by the mall........I sure hope this little guy who was just a foot and a half from the tip of his cute little nose, to the tip of his tail survives........the week prior a young beaver was eating along this very same sidewalk......

About a block away just past an exit further down the road........ is the other half of this particular habitat that yet another Nutria, white as snow lives in........I video taped him swimming across the marsh there........I sure hope he survives too........it would be sad as hell to see if he ever got hurt.........

I sure do hope these people simply just leave the bear alone.......

they should not kill this bear for normal bear behavior, even the woman who was bit acknowledges that it wasn't personal, just a momma defending her cub. it's ridiculous to try to hunt the bear down if it didn't hunt or kill a person.

Can you blame a bear that was hungry and probably horny at the same time?

Leave the bear alone that's his territory.......we infringe on their habit......why should the bear be euthanized?

Apparently, once a bear attacks a human, he/she will continue to do so. I thought bears that attack people were first removed farther away from humans, and then, if they returned, they were killed. Either way, it is a tragedy. We are ruining this earth for all of us, human and animal.

Just what I was thinking, Denisehh3. The mother bear was probably defending
her cub. Why should the mother bear who has a cub be euthanized ? The female
shouldn't have bitten the woman, but the bite was a minor injury. Why kill a mother
bear just because she was defending her cub and looking for food in a dumpster
because as you said, people infringe on their habitat.

"Exposed garbage " in the dumpsters and outside of your home will attract the bears. If we want to help wildlife from being euthanized, we have to be responsible for proper disposal of our garbage. It is very difficult to relocate bears as they often find their way back. I hope they at least can find a refuge center for this bear and possible cubs.

Sorry Evecaren, I posted this in the wrong spot. I saw your great post and responded under your name by mistake.

They let guys who kill teenagers go free in that same county, while this poor creature that's following it's instincts gets the death sentance.

That's actually a really good point. I commend you.

Since they plan of killing the bear if they catch her I hope they never catch her.
