Free Trees In NYC: As Part Of One-Million Tree Effort, City Giving Away Thousands This Spring (VIDEO)

It's sunny, birds are chirping, flowers are blooming, there could be a lot of bees swarming, and if the city has its way, this spring a whole lot of new trees will be growing.

As part of the Bloomberg administration's effort to plant one million trees in the five boroughs by 2017 to offset greenhouse gas emissions, The New York Restoration Project and the Department of Parks and Recreation are giving away some 5,000 "Japanese maple, Eastern redbud, flowering cherry, Carolina silverbell, blackgum and fruit trees — cherries, plums, apples, pears, peach, fig and persimmon," The New York Times reports.

Bloomberg's campaign has already sprouted 500,000 new trees across the city, according to The Times. Now, let's just hope the Parks Department doesn't cut them down to thwart muggers.
