Teen Texting: New Report Shows They Send 60 Texts A Day

Teens And Texting

Teens might appear addicted to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr or Skype, but according to a new report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, texting ranks as the number one mode of communication among them. Kids between the ages of 12 and 17 text a median of 60 times a day -- up from 50 in 2009.

To conduct the study, researchers surveyed almost 800 teenagers between April and July 2011 and conducted a series of focus groups.

According to the report, girls take the lead as most frequent texters (a median of 100 a day, compared to 50 for boys), but boys were responsible for a greater increase from 2009 -- they jumped from 30 texts daily.

About 77% of teens own a cellphone with one in four owning a smartphone. And most are texting. 75% said they actively text; 63% said they text everyday. Their voices aren't as active as their thumbs, however, only 39% make calls daily. Those who texted the most were more likely to talk on the phone as well.

Only 29% send messages through social networking sites -- surprising considering 80% of teens use them. HuffPost Teen blogger April H., recently wrote that "social media is like a drug" to many kids.

Less than half of those surveyed, 35%, say they socialize face-to-face with friends outside of school.

The study is on par with a Nielsen survey conducted in December which found that teens send an average of 3,417 texts a month, 7 times an hour. Girls were the most verbose in their findings too -- they send 3,952 messages per month compared to 2,815 by the boys.

As for parents, mom and pediatrician Dr. Claire McCarthy, articulated both the concerns and benefits of kids using cellphones.

There are dangers and downsides. We've learned to manage most of those with safety and usage rules (no texting while walking on the street and phone off at bedtime, for example.) We talk about bullying and other ways phone usage can go bad.

But we've also found that there are real upsides. The convenience and safety stuff is huge, but the ability to connect is really wonderful too.

It is nothing but an addiction plain and simple . If you tried to stop teenagers from texting they would probably have a nervous breakdown ..Actually I find it rather sad .

and you wonder why kids grow up without social skills or manners?

Still another reason that cell phone providers should raise the rates to $3 a minute and stop all of this foolishness.

60? My Daughter, who will be 16 next month, sent 18,000+ Texts last month. 60 is a very low estimate. My Daughter also carries a 3.82 GPA, so I guess I don't mind.

As a male teenager, these numbers are a tad off, I'm in college, and I see alot of guys texting alot. I usually send about 30 an hour in about a 9 hour period. Before anyone says my test scores are bad or whatever, I carry a 3.5 GPA. Always.

You and your friends have way too much time on your hands. You are in college to actually learn something. If you spent as much time studying as you did texting YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS would be better off.

this is how kids comminicate these days. It's the new age. We used get to together and talk about issues or make a call. They do not. they text non stop. It's just how it is. the only down side I see is that social skills can go out the window...Oh and probably phone etiquette needs to be learnt..No texting at table, while talking to someone etc. My kids stay in constant contact witheit peers that way. One a senior and one a sophomore. One's GPA is 3.2 and the other is 4.4. It bugs me a little but it is the new way of communicating.

I guess spelling is not your strong suit A LOT is two words and you should have learned that in third grade. I know you have spell check.
The only 3.5 GPA you carry is for texting

They will all lack communication skills. Actually they will be texting each other. English teachers fail kids who turn in papers with text speak. And, so they should.

No talking. Glorified smoke signals.
