Lane Madison's Death After Fight At Oklahoma Church Ruled A Homicide

12-Year-Old Boy's Death In Church Fight Ruled A Homicide

A scuffle between two young boys at an Oklahoma church turned tragic earlier this year when one of them hit his head on the basement floor and died.

This week, the state medical examiner ruled 12-year-old Lane Madison's death on Jan. 11 a homicide, according to The Oklahoman.

Madison reportedly got into a fight with a 13-year-old boy at the First Baptist Church in Cordell that day. At some point, he hit his head on the floor -- which had a thin layer of carpet over concrete -- and died of head and neck injuries.

Lane's mom, Shantell Madison, told the paper that her son's best friend witnessed the fight. The friend allegedly told her that the boys were "horsing around" when the fight escalated. The friend also told Lane's mom that Madison was punched in the face, hit a wall and fell to the floor unconscious. Then the 13-year-old boy jumped on top of him and beat him further, according to Shantell Madison's recollection of the friend's story.

The mom told the paper in January that she wants the unidentified assailant to face criminal charges. But at this point, no charges have been filed

Since Madison's death, friends and family have been grieving, sharing pictures and offering their condolences on the "In Memory of Lane Madison" Facebook page.

"We love you Lane and miss you so much!" wrote one user, who referred to Madison as her brother. "I wish Chelsea would have got the chance to meet her uncle Lane but I promise I will tell her all about you. I love you brother, watch out over us and keep us safe."

Madison was an avid wrestler at Cordell Elementary where he went to school. In January, Madison's wrestling rival, Noah Hooks from Deer Creek, gave a winning medal to Madison's parents as a tribute to the boy, KOCO 5 reported in a video.
