Activists from Chicago representing working-class families and many unemployed city residents will roll out a "human red carpet" for GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney in Illinois on Tuesday.
Protestors will lie on the ground in front of the entry to the Hilton Hotel at noon, where Romney is hosting a $1,000-per-person fundraising luncheon, according to a release from Stand Up Chicago. A red carpet will be laid over protestors to represent Romney's tax plans that would allow the wealthy to "trample on struggling families."
"We're doing this to send a message to Mitt Romney and his wealthy friends to stop trampling on working Americans," Elizabeth Parisian, policy analyst for Stand Up Chicago, told The Huffington Post. "The fact is, his tax policies are going to be really harmful for everyday Americans. What he's proposing would force poor families to pay 60 percent more in taxes, while giving the country's most wealthy an additional 15 percent tax cut. He's essentially asking the poor to pay much higher taxes so the wealthy can get a tax break."
The demonstration will also feature an oversized puppet characterizing "The One Percent" and wearing a Romney campaign button on his lapel, according to Stand Up Chicago.
UPDATE: The group reports that Romney was not present during the protest and attendees declined to walk down their red carpet, thereby "trampling the middle class," but that participants in Romney's fundraising event took notice of their demonstration.
