New iPad Overheating? Apple Responds To Allegations As Consumer Reports Investigates

Posted: 03/20/2012 3:34 pm Updated: 03/21/2012 10:06 am

New Ipad Overheating

Apple probably wanted its newest iPad to be thought of as a hot item, but not like this.

Over the weekend, reports began to circulate that the newest iPad, just released on Friday, was becoming physically hot to the touch during use, specifically in the lower lefthand corner. Now, Apple has responded to these reports, issuing a statement to The Huffington Post, as well as AllThingD and The Verge. Here's what Apple had to say about its hot new iPad:

The new iPad delivers a stunning Retina display, A5X chip, support for 4G LTE plus 10 hours of battery life, all while operating well within our thermal specifications. If customers have any concerns they should contact AppleCare.

(Translation: Chill out!).

Not everyone was satisfied by this explanation, apparently, as product review publication Consumer Reports launched an investigation into the new iPad's supposed heat problems. CR, which famously could not recommend the iPhone 4 based on a faulty antenna, published its recent findings in a blog post Tuesday afternoon, stating that the new iPad does indeed get up to 13 degrees hotter than the iPad 2, according to thermal images, when playing the graphics-heavy Infinity Blade II game. This corroborated an earlier report from Dutch blog Tweakers.net, which similarly found that the new iPad was running up to 10 degrees warmer than the iPad 2 in its own tests.

Throwing cold water all of the excitement, however, Consumer Reports writer Donna Tapellini says that though the new iPad hit 116 degrees Fahrenheit, this warmth is no cause for concern:

"During our tests, I held the new iPad in my hands," Tapellini writes on the Consumer Reports blog. "When it was at its hottest, it felt very warm but not especially uncomfortable if held for a brief period."

The tangible heat on the new iPad has been attributed to its larger battery and graphics chip. The iPad's new Retina display has four times as many pixels as the screen on the iPad 2 and reportedly necessitated a bigger battery in order to maintain the high battery life that the iPad 2 enjoys; that bigger, bulkier battery has apparently been enough to warm up the back casing of the new iPad, sending many new iPad owners to the Apple Discussion Forums to complain.

Of course, there are many more new iPad owners than there ever have been before, as these initial reports of iPad hotness have not cooled down demand. Apple recently announced that it had sold over 3 million iPads in its first weekend of availability.

Take a look through the slideshow (below) to see a few of the other minor problems critics pointed out while testing the new iPad. (Note, however, that critical responses to the new device were overwhelmingly positive. Click here to see what reviewers liked most about the tablet.)

  • No FaceTime Over 4G

The Verge's Dieter Bohn found a small but "vexing" problem <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/14/2873026/new-ipad-facetime-lte" target="_hplink">while attempting to use FaceTime over the new iPad's 4G network.</a> "[A]ttempting to initiate a FaceTime call over LTE fails out with a message exhorting you to connect to a Wi-Fi network," he wrote. While it has always been true that FaceTime only worked on Wi-Fi and not over cellular networks, Bohn points out that this is especially annoying when you can turn your Verizon iPad into an LTE hotspot, which would allow you to FaceTime on other devices <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/14/2873026/new-ipad-facetime-lte" target="_hplink">but not on the iPad acting as the hotspot.</a> <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2012/03/14/the-new-ipad-review/" target="_hplink">TechCrunch's MG Siegler echoes Bohn's complaint</a> about FaceTime being available only via Wi-Fi, "despite the fact that the LTE networks are so much faster (faster than my WiFi even), Apple says that FaceTime will still be WiFi-only for now."

  • HD Content Wows On The Retina Display, Non-HD Doesn't

Reviewers found that enhanced apps and high-definition movies look amazing on the iPad's mind-blowing Retina display, but they noted with disappointment that non-HD content doesn't quite shine. According to Macworld, <a href="http://www.macworld.com/article/1165849/review_the_third_generation_ipad.html" target="_hplink">un-enhanced apps look super pixelated on the Retina screen</a>: "Non-Retina apps look more or less like they did on previous iPads -- but on the new iPad's Retina display those pixels really stand out." While <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/15/technology/personaltech/the-new-ipad-is-much-the-same-only-better.html?_r=2&pagewanted=1&ref=technology" target="_hplink">the New York Time's David Pogue</a> calls the iPad "the world's first tablet that can actually show you hi-def movies in full 1080p high definition,</a>" he also notes that Netflix doesn't currently offer movies in high-def for the iPad, so many average consumers won't be able to enjoy all the new iPad's display has to offer.

  • Comparatively Weak Front-Facing Camera

While The Verge's Joshua Topolsky praised the video and photo capabilities of the rear camera <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/14/2870533/ipad-review" target="_hplink">he was less enthused about the front-facing module, writing:</a> <blockquote>Around front, you can expect the same basic quality of the last generation iPad -- which means it's nothing to write home about. It would have been nice to see at least a 720p shooter on the flip side of the tablet considering how hard Apple's been trying to push FaceTime, but you're stuck with VGA here.</blockquote>

  • No Siri

Many were surprised that Apple's voice-activated assistant Siri wasn't one of the iPad's upgrades. A new dictation feature allows users to get around some of the problems that the device's virtual keyboard presents, but as Pogue writes for the Times, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/15/technology/personaltech/the-new-ipad-is-much-the-same-only-better.html?pagewanted=2&_r=2&ref=technology" target="_hplink">that's as close to Siri that the new tablet users will get</a>. Users will have to pour one out for the rest of Siri's features, including "the ability to set alarms, send text messages, look up calendar appointments and snag facts from the Web just by asking out loud," Pogue lists. SlashGear also laments the absence of Siri, <a href="http://www.slashgear.com/new-ipad-review-3rd-gen-14218465/" target="_hplink">citing it as the biggest omission in the new iPad. </a>

  • Warm Corner

It's a good indication of how much the reviewers are loving the iPad <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2012/03/14/the-new-ipad-review/" target="_hplink">when one of the main complaints in TechCrunch's review is about a corner of the iPad that heats up after prolonged use.</a> After praising the screen and the speed, MG Siegler seems almost embarrassed complaining about one corner heating up: <blockquote>One other slight downside which I have to assume is related to either the battery or the LTE functionality is that unlike previous iPad models, the new iPad does get noticeably warm in the lower left corner after prolonged use. It's never hot, just warm. But again, I never noticed this on other models.</blockquote>

  • Nice Stuff Takes Up Space

<a href="http://www.macworld.com/article/1165849/review_the_third_generation_ipad.html" target="_hplink">According to tests conducted by Macworld, </a>the enhanced apps consume up to three times as of the iPad's storage space as un-enhanced apps. MG Siegler worried in his review that the enhanced apps and high-definition movies, which "you'll obviously want" <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2012/03/14/the-new-ipad-review/" target="_hplink">will take up precious iPad storage space.</a> "On the iPad I'm testing out, I have three pages of apps, a few hundred photos, one HD movie, and one music album. It's really not that much stuff, but it takes up over 20 GB of storage. The apps alone are over 10 GB of that," he says.

I was very happy when I got my hands on the new iPad. I didn't notice this at first, but when I took the tablet into my backyard, and my iPhone was able to pick up my router signal without a hassle; the iPad didn't pick up the network at all. This became a nightmare for me. I have spent a lot of time on google, looking for a solution to this. Right when I lost all hope, I came across WIRED magazine and found a review of Pong Research cases. After seeing the great feedback on their products, I bought one and it finally put an end to the problem. And that's not all, one of the features I like the most is their Origami Cover which folds in 5 different positions while still maintaining the sleep/wake function.

The new Ipad gets very warm under extreme use, like brightness up all the way and running graphic programs. The general public does not understand how electronics work and the heat they put out under high use. The new Ipad does not get HOT!!!! Consumer Reports could only get the temperature up to 117 degrees. I have been using mine for a week now and I am getting use to the warm fuzzy feel of the device. This tablet computer is light years ahead of the competition. I do a lot of reading and now I find I can turn the size of the letters down because things are so sharp. The new screen is worth the switch from the IPad 2, but the other improved features make it a no brainer. The problem of getting warmer than what your use to is not a deal breaker. The public must understand that this tablet has a large 4 core graphics processor and a large powerful battery. The energy is converted to heat and the device has no fan or open air to cool it down. Believe me, 117 degrees is not going to hurt it and that temperature is still NOT HOT!!!!!!!

"The general public does not understand how electronics work..."

well duh, otherwise no one would be buying Apple products

117degrees.. I assume that is on the surface of the device. I wonder how hot it is at the source and whether that heat will prematurely damage/wear the internal components of the new iPad. I guess we'll see after a few months how many of the new iPads start having problems. Steve (assuming he was still with us) would probably not have allowed the device to be released w/o some sort of better heat dissipation structure installed being the perfectionist he is. You're quite right that the problem of getting warmer is not a deal breaker, many electronics do get warm with use.. The deal breaker would probably be that as a result of the heat 'problem' the new iPad has a much shorter lifetime than its 2 predecessors. And the damage would not be directly financial, it would be damage to Apple's brand. Maybe Apple could use the quote by Lao Tzu, "The flame that burns Twice as bright burns half as long.", for their next stockholder's meeting.

Won't matter if it only lasts 2 months until the "NEW" iPad comes out in 2 months with some unbelievable feature or addon...something all the Androids have had that Apple will have claimed to invented in 1977.

It only has to make it until the "next generation" release date....then it should self destruct!

I have no problems with this Ipad -- or any Ipad. Maybe I would, IF I bought one first. You think?

I have been working and playing with the new Ipad for a week now and I must say that this warm to hot issue is overblown. The general public has no understanding of how electronics work and they are blowing everything out of proportion. The new Ipad has technology on a mobile device that no one has had before. The huge A5X chip and the huge battery are converting energy into heat. I have had the display as bright as it can be and ran graphics intensive program for one hour. The Ipad got very warm, but not hot. I am convinced the Ipad will never get truely hot to the touch. Consumer Reports could only get it up to 117 degrees F and that is not enough to be considered hot. Apple did a lot of tests before putting it on the market. The public cannot understand why it is very warm while running the display at full brightness and working the processor hard. I have been teaching science for over 40 years and know that the general public is illiterate, when it comes to electronics or science. This says something about our country. People are spending too much time on reading the myths of the Bible, when they should be learning technology and science, that can help them in the future.

You are absolutely correct..the heat issue is not that much of a deal were you cant even hold it..ppl are just blowing it out off perportion. Its does get very warm while gaming but with a case on the back i barely let that get to me..these ppl really dont appreciate what apple has done here..I mean a godamn retina display on a screen this big the A5X duale core chipset and many more enhancements....and yes science is practicaly our future it has shaped our world it has enhanced our minds and has made us smarter than ever and yet ppl still has the nerve to fall back on beliefs and bs..what a sad generation of ppl of those that will never understand the magic we have created with science as our flagship Tool...as humans our biigest downfall will be our emotional shortcomings wich have dictated the path you see now with so many uneducated ppl in several fields..how far will the science take us? Who knows for how far can we keep inventing and creating off of it until its all over? Not to long..mainly because of the huge number of ppl that are agiants intelligence or dont understand it..im glad I got this much out..thanxx for your post there are some who do understand and see the vision..have a great day.

Ya think maybe people are just warming up to asking for a price rebate? I mean afterall you can't have something "defective" without getting a little something in return. It sort of reminds me of the mindset sweeping our country. If it's free we've got to have it. Never mind if we need it, just got to have it.

Hey! There's our solution! An insulating foam iPad cover to keep the heat stored in the metal case from burning our fingers! What a great product!

Business and school things hardly make use of the full GPU and CPU power.

116 degrees? I guess if you're a dude just don't put it in your lap. My tablet doesn't feel warm ever. Comparatively speaking hairdryers cut off temperature is 140 degrees because any higher has potential to burn skin.
