Divorce Rate: SourceFed Webseries Seeks To Explain Splits (VIDEO)

Posted: 03/21/2012 6:33 pm Updated: 03/21/2012 9:10 pm

It's long been claimed that nearly half of marriages in the U.S. end in divorce. That's no laughing matter, but in a video posted Monday, hosts from the YouTube web series SourceFed try to make sense of the stat -- and manage to get in some laughs while they're at it.

The web channel, deemed the "The Daily Show" for the YouTube Generation by some, is known for its jokey, irreverent takes on nearly everything -- remote-controlled wings, Tim Tebow, the correlation between red-meat consumption and early death.

But in this segment on the divorce rate, hosts Lee Newton and Elliott Morgan have a hard time getting their heads around why some divorcees go on to marry for a second or third time.

"Regardless of the pain of an arduous divorce process, these people can't help but hop back on the train to Regretsville and go back for seconds or thirds," Newton jokes, categorizing these divorcees as marriage addicts, "'maddicts,' if you will."

"With divorce being so calm, passé and easy," Morgan offers, "why wouldn't you just try on a different shoe if the one you're wearing doesn't fit?"

Watch the video above and tell us what you think of SourceFed's take on divorce in the comments.

seems like equality under eyes of law doesn't extend to divorce courts.Marriage is lose lose proposition for a man.So why marry? There are numerous women to date.

Some divorcees were married relatively young the first time and had a short marriage with no kids. Why wouldn't they get married again? I think they probably have a good chance of a marriage that lasts.

I've been a divorce support group facilitator for 15 years. Here's what I've learned about remarriage: Your pain is equal to your ability to love deeply.

Shallow lovers don't hurt much because they never cared that much, so remarriage is not that big a risk. Deep lovers suffer awfully, but will still crave that soul-fulfilling relationship. If they learn from the experience they will make better choices the second time.

Men should not remarry, given the ~70% divorce rate of second marriages and the additional risk of new financial obligations in the event of a divorce.

And women should stop trying to bully their men into a proposal too.
Women ought to know better about marriage as well.

I think it was Samuel Johnson who said that second marriages are the triumph of hope over experience.

The divorce rate for highly educated couples with children is very low. A number I saw in the New York Times earlier this year was a 10 year marriage survival rate of 89%. That is a LOT higher than 50%.

I agree that divorce rates vary. I think that the higher education one has, the more informed and thoughtful couples are before they engage in marriage. Also, education provides a foundation for problem-solving, conflict resolution and seeking our support and resources which couples can use to work through the difficult challenges that any (married or otherwise) bring ro that relationship.

Unfortunately, college educated women initiate their divorces NEARLY 90% of the time. (88%) Considering overall women initiate all divorce over 66% this unsettling trend has continued to rise.

Yeah, but overall, they're not initiating that many divorces.

Presumably they have more financial independence and can divorce more easily.

"the show.. is known for its jokey, irreverent takes on nearly everything --" The show is funny. That is true. But it sure isn't irrelevant. I do advise the readers to watch more videos from SourceFed

Actually, split rates vary much year after year, and geographically, etc... some years and places up to 67% a year.
