Eve Carson: Photograph of Slain UNC Student Displayed On Indian Billboard

Eve Carson

Along National Highway 49 in southern India, images of UNC student Eve Carson adorn billboards advertising Jubeerich Consultancy.

Carson, former student body president and Morehead-Cain scholar, was abducted and shot to death in 2008.

According to the News & Observer, New Zealand-based company Jubeerich Consultancy has used Carson's headshot on at least two billboards without permission. The company promotes itself as a "leading and reputed firm in the world offering overseas study opportunities and placement services," and Carson's image is one of the many young, blond faces that appear as part of Jubeerich's advertising campaign.

“I’m surprised and disappointed that somebody is using Eve’s image in this way,” Chuck Lovelace, executive director of the Morehead-Cain Scholars Program, told the News & Observer. “It certainly does not honor Eve or her family, and they would not want it to be used in this way.”

Staff members at Jubeerich's corporate office in India allegedly denied knowledge of any such billboard, according to New Zealand's 3 News. How many images of Carson are currently in use and how, exactly, the company acquired the photograph remains unclear.

Beyond ethical concerns, the use of Carson's photograph raises legal issues: the image in question is her official student body president portrait, meaning UNC owns the copyright. Noting this infringement, UNC law professor Deborah Gerhardt told the News & Observer that ideally, people in India will recognize the offensive nature of this advertising campaign for U.S. citizens and appeal to the company for its removal.

“You just have to hope that people will respect the dignity of her family and her memory and understand that for people who see this in the United States, this really evokes a horrible tragedy,” Gerhardt said.

Originally from Athens, Ga., Eve Carson was a senior at UNC-Chapel Hill when she was robbed and killed. Carson held a scholarship through the Morehead-Cain program, the "oldest and most prestigious merit program in the United States," and the student-leader's death came as a great loss to UNC-Chapel Hill. An active member of student government, she was well-known on campus, and the Daily Tar Heel even endorsed her campaign. On March 5, the fourth anniversary of her death, the Tar Heel commemorated her legacy with various opinion pieces from the UNC community.

Since 2008, Laurence Lovette Jr. and Demario Atwater have been convicted of her murder and are now serving life sentences.

The trial was mentioned in recent news when Robert Carden, the police lieutenant responsable for Carson's murder investigation, filed a complaint of age discrimination after he was transferred to a different division at the Chapel Hill Police Department.

Indian's buy 14 or 20 megapixels cameras but they don't even try to make an advertisement with genuine concepts and original models. instead they simply search in Google and take pics of smiling foreign ladies. this incident is a shame for Indian people and this should not happen again.

Even if the Indian public comes to know about this, i don't think there would be much of a reaction. Everyday we wake up to hearing about rapes and murders in the news. l think it was last month in West Bengal, a girl was gang-raped. The Chief Minister of the state not only went on news saying that it was all a conspiracy but also fired the police officials who actually caught the culprits.

This case is different. This is a beautiful American girl with All-American looks that is raising an outcry in America. India will notice and take action, wait and see. This is not the same as what you are saying, even it is true. The picture is changing soon!

Folks, how do you expect some people to respect the dead? They don't respect the living, the dead, the sacred, the sublime, or themselves. But put a price on it... that they respect.

If I meant Indians, I would have said Indians. Please do not put words in my mouth, or assume that I implied anything other than what I said... "Some people."

It's painful to the family, why do this? There's many young fresh faces that they could have used. Let this poor girl rest in peace and stop desecrating her image.

THINK THINK...U guys really think people in India follow all the happenings in USA. I can assure you that of the 1.2 billion people in India 1.19999 billion will not recognize the picture of Natalee Holloway. The company used the image without knowing, and has issued an apology and taken down the billboards. So save ur outrage.

I JUST HEARD A SIMILAR STORY ABOUT A SLAIN SOLDIER. HIS PHOTO WAS BEING USED WITHOUT THE FAMILY'S PERMISSION. THE INT'L COMPANIES HAVE NO CLUE ABOUT WHERE THESE PICS SHOW UP WHEN THEY ARE PRESENTED. I THINK THEY NEED TO DO SOME RESEARCH PRIOR TO POSTING THESE PICS. IT IS A SAD STORY AND IT IS UNFORTUNATE FOR THE FAMILY TO HAVE TO UNDERGO FURTHER STRESSES WITH LOSING A LOVED ONE. I THINK THERE SHOULD BE SOME ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THIS PICTURE GETTING TO THESE COMPANIES.

If we could suppress all the men of the world or send them all to their own planet, women wouldn't be violated against. Until Then, All women should walk in pairs and always let someone know where you are because there will always be a man somewhere close with thoughts of harming you. At my ripe old age i see it everywhere even when I'm outloud by holding my mace in my hand Men don't care! They will still approach you.

You're not a woman so you'll NEVER understand how male sexuality is so pervasive all over the world! There is no escape from being bombarded by images- film, videos, magazines, bill boards, etc of males' sex-lust! Add to the mix males making crude jokes, comments,...IT'S OPPRESSIVE cos there's no escaping males' sex-obsession...

ARGGG! look, those skinny women DO have everything to do with what MALES expect from women--to be sexually attractive for males! If you've never heard women put down by males for being fat, or 'ugly'....you know, not fukkable--and it's all around--movies, music, rap, videos(youtube), especially stand up...(sigh...)...are you totally oblivious?!

ALSO, I DO have back-up for my claims--it's called "the news"---sure you've heard of it?....like I said if you can't/don't/won't see my point of view, it's because you DON'T HAVE TO!...SO, I know keeping this thread going with you is like spitting in the wind, but, here goes: AGAIN, going back to the ORIGINAL post, Women do have to be vigilant- there are TOO MANY instances of what can happen--women ignore men to their own peril! WHY? If YOU heard MY footsteps behind you at night, would you give it a moments thought? Not unless you wanted to...would you feel uneasy? DOUBT IT...you'd know it was a woman and you wouldn't feel threatened....NOW, reverse that situation....AND, if you still don't "get" it, you probably never will...
Oh yeah, we all know how "facebook" is the real world, and the public streets leading to the st.'s capitols are not as important or convey REAL CARE, like "facebook".....

It's not going to happen in this Country (Thank God) the NRA is too big, too strong, and has way too many members. Besides, guns don't kill people, people kill people. It's a fact that law abiding citizens who are armed don't kill other people, it's also a fact, that the criminals that are let out of prison early, parolees, or repeat offenders that will ALWAYS keep the prisons full.

What I remember about this case was what REALLY is bothering many people in America today but are afraid to say out loud.
She was one of those people who had something to contribute to society. We were all robbed by her murder.
The two young men who took her life were NEVER were going to be anything other than what they showed themselves to be.
This scene plays out thousands of times a year and unless it happens in YOUR town, you dont hear much about it.The longer people remain silent, the worse it gets.
When you are enabling people to have children they cant afford(like THEIR mom did) by giving them welfare, you are dooming ALL of society. These people have no idea about parenting or teaching. Why not do everything possible to discourage them from repeating the cycle?

It's called.............CARRY!

You are very misguided. You should not sterotype individuals on welfare or their children. Just because a person's parents may not be productive citizens or be able or willing to stand on their own two feet doesn't mean that their children are the same way. Not all children born to welfare recipients will grow up to pillage and murder, some will become very productive members of society. Please don't be so closed minded about people, they are not all the same nor are their situations.
