George Zimmerman, the 28-year-old neighborhood watch captain who fatally shot unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin in Florida on Feb. 26, is originally from Northern Virginia. Zimmerman moved from Manassas to Florida with his parents about a decade ago, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
The Sentinel contacted several of Zimmerman's former neighbors in Manassas. The neighbors told the paper that "they remembered the family but didn't know George Zimmerman well."
"He seemed to be a good-enough kid," recalled Ron Whitis, who lived next door to the Zimmermans in Manassas, about 30 miles from Washington. "I really don't know a lot about him."
Whitis described the suburban Prince William County neighborhood as a place where people mostly keep to themselves. Another neighbor said about the same: She knew of Zimmerman but didn't know him personally.
The Sentinel has also uncovered more of Zimmerman's criminal history: In 2005, a domestic violence petition was filed against him, a month after he was arrested after a "short struggle" with police in a bar. In 2007, a credit card company pursued Zimmerman for unpaid debts.
Zimmerman has not yet been arrested for killing Martin. The state attorney in Seminole County, Fla. said that a grand jury will be convened to investigate Martin's death. Almost 800,000 people have signed an online petition asking that Zimmerman be prosecuted for killing Martin.
