Jason Russell, 'Kony 2012' Creator, Suffered From 'Reactive Psychosis,' Family Claims

Posted: 03/21/2012 1:27 pm Updated: 03/22/2012 9:42 am

The family of Jason Russell, the creator of the "Kony 2012" viral video and a co-founder of the advocacy group Invisible Children, said that "brief reactive psychosis" brought on his public meltdown on a San Diego street corner last week.

"The preliminary diagnosis he received is called brief reactive psychosis, an acute state brought on by the extreme exhaustion, stress and dehydration," the statement reads. "Though new to us, the doctors say this is a common experience given the great mental, emotional and physical shock his body has gone through in these last two weeks."

Danica Russell, the wife of 33-year-old Jason Russell, issued the statement -- posted to Invisible Children's blog on Tuesday morning -- on behalf of the family. It says that Russell will remain hospitalized "for a number of weeks" and that "the recovery process could take months before he is fully able to step back into his role with Invisible Children."

From the Associated Press:

The condition is triggered by extreme stress. Symptoms include hallucinations and strange speech and behavior. Antipsychotic drugs and talk therapy can alleviate symptoms and people typically get better within a month.

Called "the most viral video of all time" by ReadWriteWeb, "Kony 2012" received over 100 million views on YouTube and Vimeo in just four weeks.

After an initial wave of support for the campaign that highlighted abuses committed by Joseph Kony and the Lord's Resistance Army, the organization was criticized for its spending practices, funding sources and for oversimplifying a complex issue, among other things.

The video also prompted outrage last week in Uganda when it was shown at a public screening.

The statement from Russell's family also emphasized that the "incident was in no way the result of drugs or alcohol."

TMZ reported on Friday that Russell was "under the influence of some kind of substance," but Lt. Andra Brown, a San Diego Police Department spokeswoman, refuted that claim.

"If we thought he was under the influence, we wouldn’t have taken him to a hospital; we would have taken him to jail," Brown said, according to The New York Times.

"Jason will get better," the statement reads. "He has a long way to go, but we are confident that he will make a full recovery."

I wouldn't be surprized if part of his "psychosis" is due to 'repressed homosexuality.'

So, does "brief reactive psychosis" give you brief symptoms of homosexuality? I saw the video, that guys is FLAMING.

Answer to my first post: "He's aligned himself with people who are supporting the "KillTheGays" bill in Uganda. This isn't one of the "good" guys."

My Answer: Just an educated guess on my part but I take it he's aligning him self with them because they're the only group in Uganda who are willing to work with him to help his cause in Uganda. I align my self with evangelicals who support banning gay marriage & adoptions and we feed the homeless together. Sometimes our "enemies" have a common interest. Dual relationships are possible. You agree on one thing while you disagree on another. Again just a guess on my part because I don't know the man but I seriously doubt he supports a death penalty for homosexuality.

That video was basically trying to make a killer famous, and shaping the world for the better, for that innocent white little baby.

All of it was a joke.

Sharing pictures on Facebook, and "liking" photos isn't going to help catch this guy.

Hell, we have no proof this Kony is real.

Not that my opinion matters much, but I'm not buying the "brief reactive psychosis" explanation for his TMZ-reported behavior. My gut tells me that Mr. Russell may have issues that have yet to be, and may never be, publicized. Hope he gets the treatment he needs and improves. I don't believe all the facts concerning Mr. Russell, his 'Kony 2012' film and the finances of his advocacy group, Invisible Children, have all come to light. Remember, just my opinion.

That's nothing new that people with mentally disabilities have a great ideas. Their unique world of mind creates unique works.

The Russel pathology is activated by the huge international popularity and inability to take the burden of fame on his back.Tons of criticism he recieved after the video also could triggered his reaction.

Simpy, he was not ready to accept all that happened in very short time, but maybe it is better he exploded on such way than he kept that in himself, because such type of supression could lead him in suicide or homocide.

Some of very tragic celebrities are obvious cases of that.

Thanks for explaining all this. As for me, I have seen this naked man now, for days on end. No matter what article I go to, there he is. If we are going to see naked men, I am now more than ready for a new one. Full monty, please! And he better be both goodlooking and sane.

Meanwhile, back in Africa, people must be thinking Kony has the 'baddest juju (witchcraft)' for revenging on a person who exposed him to the virtual world!
06:56 AM on 03/23/2012
lol....though it not funny.....That was my exact thoughts as well...thanks for sayin it!

Wow! Those people in Africa must have the best common sense possible. Can not be said of all people everywhere. And the witchcraft appears to be working on many more than the exhibitionist. Huffpost can not get enough of it!

Plenty of organic and original commonsense still exists on the continent! Irrelevant comparisons sometimes confound issues.

Can't help but think the stress is money related, stemming from the financial situation of the organisation. None the less, if his intentions were good, it's a shame to see another good man fall victim to public ridicule for a cause which will probably, ultimately fail.

I know I'm a cynic but I'm curious about the finances of his organization. Could some of his "stress" be money related?
