One Direction 'Up All Night' Makes History: Album Tops US Album Charts

Posted: Updated:

One Direction has made Billboard history. The British boy band topped the Billboard 200 chart with their debut album "Up All Night," making them the first UK group to debut at No. 1 with their debut album. The album topped both Bruce Springsteen's "Wrecking Ball" and Adele's "21."

"Up All Night" debuted on the charts with 176,000 units sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. One Direction bested the previous record set by pop group the Spice Girls in 1997 when their debut album "Spice" entered the charts at No. 6. One Direction's single "What Makes You Beautiful" entered the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart at No. 28, which also marked the highest debut for a UK group since the Spice Girls' "Wannabe" debuted at No. 11 in 1997.

In case you haven't heard, One Direction -- comprised of Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan -- is currently taking over stateside with teen girls across the U.S. falling for their British charms. The boy band was formed on the seventh series of the British singing competition "The X Factor," after guest judge Nicole Scherzinger made a recommendation to Simon Cowell to put the five solo hopefuls together to compete in the competition as a group act.

Despite not winning "The X Factor," One Direction quickly surged to the top of the charts in the UK. The band released their debut album Up All Night in November 2011, and it debuted at No. 2 on the UK charts, selling 138,600 in its first week. Up All Night went on to reach the top 10 in 15 other countries as well.

One Direction will be hitting the road for their first headlining North American tour in support of their album "Up All Night." The tour will kick off in Fairfax, Va., on May 24 and includes stops in New York City, Los Angeles, Toronto, Dallas and more.

To add to their stateside success, One Direction just landed their own Nickelodeon show.
