Trayvon Martin March: Organizers To Hold Million Hoodie March To Show Solidarity With Slain Teen's Family

Trayvon Martin

Organizers from several groups have organized the Million Hoodies for Trayvon March in New York, to show solidarity with the family of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed Florida teen killed by a neighborhood volunteer patrolling the area.

Martin was wearing a hoodie Feb. 26 when he was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, according to audio from the 911 calls the night of the shooting.

Organizer Daniel Maree, of New York, said that he saw parallels between the circumstances surrounding Martin's death and his own experiences.

"I lived in Florida for two years in Gainesville," he told Huffington Post BlackVoices. "I would be driving alone at night and would get stopped by the police for no other reason than being an African-American man in a predominantly white, gated community."

The event, he noted, coincides with the United Nations International Day To End Racial Discrimination. At press time, around 4,000 people said they would attend the Union Square event.

Martin, 17, was returning to his father's house after walking to a nearby store to get candy when he was pursued by Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch member. Zimmerman called 911 and told police dispatchers that Martin "looked suspicious." Zimmerman and Martin had a confrontation, and Martin was shot in the chest. Zimmerman, who police said told them he shot Martin in self-defense, has not been arrested or charged in the incident.

Martin's parents, who started an online petition pushing for Zimmerman's prosecution, are scheduled to attend the event in New York's Union Square.

Pastor Terry Jones responds:

Trayvon Martin, a tragic event, but also an event that reveals to us the condition of America.
A couple of days ago, I was at the doctor’s office. In the office, there were primarily black people and the story came on the television about the shooting of, Trayvon Martin. Immediately, all of the black people condemned the man that shot, Trayvon. Automatically that man was guilty. Why? What conclusion can we draw, must we draw, from this type of reaction? Number one, we have a problem with racism, that black people are just as racist if not more, than white people. They condemned this man without a trial and without evidence. He was automatically guilty because he was white. Number two, they came to that conclusion because of racism and the news media. The news media has not done its job for a long time. The news media is biased. The news media has presented story, after story, after story, twisting and turning, until they have convinced the American people that, George Zimmerman, is guilty. That is a great travesty. It violates everything that America stands for and violates our Constitution. It violates the fact that everyone has the right, black or white, everyone has the right, a Constitutional right to be presumed innocent until found guilty by our court system and our rule of law. Until then, George Zimmerman, is innocent according to our Constitution. America is being corrupted, controlled, and manipulated. Americans, wake up.

I am Trayvon Martin

I walk with trepidation along the dark street

And tonight with drizzling rain, there is haste in my feet
My friend is on the phone and she calms me

Then I hear footsteps behind following. Who could that be?
Run! Get away, I thought but I was always told
A Black boy running on the street is suspicious and to watch what I hold
You must be poised at all times with your hands in sight
Vigilant and more careful on the streets at night
Obama is president now so why is this still so
No one should assume the worse from my skin color where I go

My follower catches up on me and usurps misplaced authority
And with a threatening tone asked where should I be
Remember the fear I spoke of, it’s not for another man’s flaw
The fear comes from my country and the “Stand your ground” law
I see people killed by criminals who get off scot-free
No, it is not the fear of another man but the fear of an unsafe society

Unless this march is followed up by your vote; it is all for naught. Jeb Bush signed the Castle Doctrine into Florida Law lobbied by National Rifle Assoc (NRA). The NRA helped get his brother George elected President. He owed them. Check you state and vote against politicians supporting "Stand you Ground." They have enabled George Zimmerman to elude prosecution and stay out of jail.

I apologize for my anger expressed yesterday concerning George Zimmerman. I let the teachings of my LORD and Savior go out my head. Vengeance is mine saith The LORD. I will repay. I'm here to tesify ain't no body can repay like The LORD. If we come together as one in HIS name. Y'all ain't seen nothin' like it. Waiting on man? For what? Man is he one who murdered Brotha Trayvon. GOD is our solution. HE can't be bought. HE is no respecter of person. HE is just. Faih is all we need. Sure let us show our solidarity. But show our solidarity in the name of The LORD. HE parted the Red Sea and they went across on dry ground. Not wet, not mud. But dry. Think HE can't handle the George Zimmerman's of the world? Then maybe you should think again. Let us come together in HIS name and in FAITH. Remember the Red Sea? It's the same GOD. We have victory in HIM, through HIM. Please,my Brothas and Sistas. You'll be surprised what a little Faith will accomplish. A lot of Faith? Oh my LORD. Y'all ain't seen nothing like it. Believe HIM and Believe in HIM. Life.

If God had deflected the bullet we wouldn't need to be asking for his help right now. Let God deal with the spirit and the soul. The rest of us will deal with Zimmerman the murderer.

Hello Unknown Soldier: And how might "the rest of us will deal with Zimmerman the mrderer?" Get him out of jail and do bad things to him? Oops, he isn't even in jail. One can lower themselves to the level of those they abhor; or one can choose to rise above. The call is that of the individual. Killing Zimmerman will not bring back Brotha Trayvon. It was an ugly and heinous thing to do to him. But man has had centuries of practice in perfecting ugly and heinous. I trust in The LORD. Vengeance is mine. This is what HE said. Ain't no body can repay like The LORD. You can believe that. Or not. Thank you for your comment. Life.

Hello Unknown Soldier; One oher thing. If man hadn't created guns and bullets in his quest to destroy his fellow man there would have been no bullets needing deflection. Leave it to man to destroy life. And usually for the dumbest things. Like differing of opinions, color, religious beliefs, money...the list is endless. Life.

I wish I could be there family. I'm in Southern ol' Alabama and you know we got it bad here. I'm making a song to show my support for Trayvon and his family and the minority community. I'm black, but I'm not naive enough to say that Trayvon could not have been any other kid with dark skin, so that covers a lot of ethnicities. This is an atrocity to the American dream, where I have to have a talk with my son (I still haven't figured out what to say yet) about how to survive in this country as he is 8 now and relatively tall and coming into the age of being a possible threat to some. Do not let this die until all wrongs have been righted, our children, all of America's children, deserve a future where this type of sh*t is actually a thing of the past and their society is actually post-racial. I believe we'll get there, but we are FAR away in 2012.

My Brothas and Sistas there is strength in numbers. Let us come together in unity, believing in The LORD. PRAISE HIM. There is nothing HE can't do. Nothing. "JESUS CHRIST the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever" Hebrews13:8. Ain't no body can do what the power of The LORD can. Remember this. Faith, Faith, Faith. Where is yours. Let us show what Faith does. To HIM be the GLORY. Life.

"What shall we then say to these things? If GOD be for us, who can be against us?" Romans 8:31. "For we walk by faith, not by sight" ll Corinthians 5:7. Let us come together as one and show the world the things that GOD does through faith in our LORD JESUS CHRIST. CHRIST cannot fail. My Brothas and Sistas of all colors let us come together as one. "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" John 8:32. Faith the size of a mustard seed? Multiply that by thousands? GOD will show everyone just who HE is. Life.

"And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand" Mark 3:25. Let us, Brothas and Sistas stand together as one in the name of The LORD JESUS CHRIST. "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in GOD, believe also in ME" John 14:1. "These things I have spoken unto you, that in ME ye have might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulations: be of good cheer; I have overcome the world" John 16:33. Now is our opportunity to show the world the power of The LORD. We must do so, Brothas and Sistas. I pray that we take heed. "We ought to obey GOD rather than men" Acts 5:29. Life.

Yesterday I expressed rage over the senseless and brutal murder of Brotha Trayvon. I ask GOD's forgiveness. How awesome would it be if everyone marching to show solidarity for Brotha Trayvon marched in the name of The LORD and with a Bible? "Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath; for it is written, vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith The LORD" Romans 12:19.
GOD does not lie. Man has shown where his heart is. "For where two or three are gathered together in MY name, there am I in the midst of them" Matthew 19:20. Can you imagine what a million gathering together in the name of The LORD would do? Some can't. But I know what the power of GOD does. Think about it my Brothas and Sistas. "Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man" Psalms 60:11. Life.

My boyfriend was an older model car fanatic, white/southern/ age 23, drove an older model "boat" size Cadillac that he loved. When he drove out to the country to meet my parents for the first time in Georgia he was also stopped by the local police. They told him they assumed he was some kid joy riding in his Dad's car and didn't like the looks of it. It goes both ways! No matter what race kids need to be aware of the realities of the world around them.

This wasn't a police stop, it wasn't even a neighborhood watch stop, it was just some drugged up or drunk guy in a car with a loaded gun deciding he wanted to shoot someone. Your boyfriend is still alive Trayvon isn't.

This is a brilliant idea and should be done in cities and towns and villages all over the country. This guy's idea of why the kid had to be followed was that he was wearing a hoodie and was black. Hoodies are worn all over the country by everyone. They are sold on HSN and QVC to middle aged white housewives. Hollywood stars wear them. ARE WE SAYING THAT THE ONLY PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY WHO CAN'T WEAR THESE PRACTICAL FASHIONS ARE BLACK TEENS AND YOUNG MEN? Its going to be hot today, but I have a purple hoodie, velour with silver pin striping. I think I will wear it.

The Media, NAACP, and Sharpton can easily "cash in" on Trayvon; While last weekend in Chicago Joel Sanroman, Arian Cruz, Vincent Fitts, Jeremy Anthony, Bert Linsey, Equilla Scot, Ceorge Marreo, and 6 year old Allyah Shell (shot on front porch) were SHOT DEAD. None were reportedly shot by Neighborhood Watchman. The black community is a virtual Killing Field, Whether justified or not, Police shootings and/or Neighborhood watch shooting are less than 1% of the total shootings. What do they do about the chicago shootings, NOTHING

In all of the shootings you mentioned, how many of them had a person how confessed to the shooting and was released by the police, before an investigation was done............... ummm yeah I thought so....... next red herring please
01:18 PM on 03/22/2012
Why the killers confess? They were cowards, killing their own kind. Whether you like it or not Zimmerman did admit to the killing. Why? Do you really know? Justice will prevail for Martin but you way of rationalizing sounds very discriminatory.
06:58 PM on 03/22/2012
The next red herring is the point you helped me make, that their lives were not important. neither are any other black lives, unless they are killed by another race (1%) And while I am at it, more black murders are unsolved than any other, wanna know why, stop snitchin !! thats why. Trayvon would have been a statistic in two years anyway, and no one would have cared. Charge it to the game, Is that red enough for you !!!!

Yes, cash in, yes cash, yes cash, yes cash in, yes cash in, yes cash in, Because these innocent Black Children need justice in America. How can you think about issues when you have to worry about getting killed in America. Racial, prejudice started all this foolishness Jim Crows, lack of jobs, hatred over generations. This did not start today this has been going on for four hundred years.

Thank you NAACP, Thank you Jessie Jackson, Thank You Al Sharpton, Thank You all other citizens who are trying to help save my life. You all not cowards.

The killers are the NAACP, Jackson, Sharpon because they enjoy the attention of the media, the money, the power, the right to skew the truth and make foolish persons like you believe praise them without questioning their true intention. The color of money, power doesn't discriminate against the color of the person skin. Wake up fool.

The excuse that Zimmerman used to follow and shoot this kid was that he looked like he was up to something.   You see he was black and wearing a hoodie.  It was a brilliant idea and should be happening all over the country.

It's not "a brilliant idea". It sounds awful, will look awful, and stereotypes Trayvon and black youth.

In addition, if it was the hoodie that got him killed, why would you want to encourage more kids to wear hoodies?

What's the logic in that?
07:15 PM on 03/22/2012
The racist media always protrays young black men as thugs, violent, dope dealers, OOPS, I shouldn't talk about BET like that.
01:54 AM on 03/22/2012
Zimmerman was clearly over the line and should be held accountable. And I'm in no way blaming the victim, but this hoodie thing should be addressed. Like it or not, the image of a young black man walking along in a hoodie is regarded by a lot of the non-black culture to be threatening. It's a stereotype reinforced in all kinds of media. When Trayvon put his hood up, it probably reinforced Zimmerman's idea that he was up to no good.

It was raining when he was shot. I put my hoodie up when it rains, or if the wind is blowing hard. I also live near a high school, both white and black students where hoodies, mostly with their hoods up.

Fanned and fave  Good grief people sound as if the real lesson here is that black kids shouldn't wear this popular fashion accessory that is sold on HSN and QVC and worn by middle aged whie housewives.   Everyone in the country should be able to wear these things but black kids because it make them 'look suspicious.

And that is why the absurdity of this has to be shown by having everyone wear them.
