Bride Lizzie Griffiths Postpones Wedding So Pet Lizard George Can Get Chemotherapy

Bearded Dragon
File photo of a bearded dragon.

Call her the anti-bridezilla.

A British woman postponed her wedding so she could use the money to treat her cancer-stricken pet lizard.

Forced to choose between her man and her scaly reptile's health, Lizzie Griffiths chose the latter. The 25-year-old schoolteacher from the London area paid approximately $4,700 so George, her bearded dragon, could get chemotherapy for tumors in his face.

"George will always come first." Griffiths told the Sun. "I fell in love with George the minute I saw him and knew I'd do anything to look after him properly."

The chemo was hailed as a success. George is in remission. It was also an unprecedented procedure on a bearded dragon in Great Britain, according to reports in the country's tabloids.

But Griffiths doesn't have the money to tie the knot with her fiance.

Chris Fisher, who's been in a relationship with Griffiths for 10 years, understood the warm affection that Griffiths has for a cold-blooded creature.

"They have a special bond," Fisher told Metro If he sits on me, he will just wriggle about. When he's with Lizzie, he's so calm – it's like he knows she saved him."

Personally I would happily pay more tax for my government to have national pet health insurance. As it is, my only option is private pet insurance and that does not cover cats older than 10 years old. It's good that this woman's lizard is doing well now but the system in the UK has the odds stacked against the pets by being so costly to their owners.

If you are going to insult others, try not to do so in a non-sensical way. Assuming I was "obtuse," intentional or not on my part, you still pointed it out, therefore completely contradicting the last part of your sentence, which, by the way, should start with a capital letter (hold down the Shift key) and end with a period/full-stop. This is not XBox Live you know. People will call you out for the non-sensical statements you make.

it is inhumane to subject an animal to such debilitating treatment unless the treatment has a good success rate, will extend its live significantly, and will leave it with a good quality of life...

unlike a human being, an animal cannot understand that you are inflicting this horror upon it for its own good - all it knows is that its once trusted, loving, owner is repeatedly handing it over to someone who causes it pain...

with this in mind, i even question some treatments if the prognosis is a good one (repeated, painful/scary treatments, that is)
10:06 PM on 03/24/2012
hmmm... something i never thought about quite like that. Some pet owners will not put a pet down because they love him so much, but really it's just selfish (or denial) when the pet is suffering.

The more sense you look for the more senseless you encounter. I would have married the guy, and then looked on the internet for some good lizard recipies. Is there any sane person on the planet, this planet or any other who truly believes there is a vet out there with a lizard chemotherapy regime in his hip pocket? If i was this chicks intended husband, I would drop her like a hot potato. She basically weighed the two choices, can you hear the conversation "lets see, darling, its you or my lizard. I'm afraid the lizard won. Hope you wont be mad." If I were him I would run, fast and far. And on the way out the door I would kick her to the curb. No man would blame him. Most of us would congratulate him.

Well, the burning question that I can't seem to shake loose Lizzie Griffiths Dahling is this: If your GUY'S lizard comes down with a bout of that self-same debilitating cancer, will you be equally as generous and magnanimous with your lettuce in paying for both HIS and IT'S chemotherapy as you have been in your handling of George - the lizard's - condition? Will George acquiesce in order that Chris Fisher the man to whom you are betrothed can live to walk HIS OWN lizard another day? I sure hope that your guy's lizard has very strong union representation indeed. Sigh...What a man will put up with for his woman AND his lizard!
