Dropping F-Bombs At Work Helps You Make Friends, Relieves Stress: Study

Anger Office

Common knowledge says spewing out profanity-laden language to let out your frustrations at work isn't the best idea. That may be a misguided assumption, as a study published in the Leadership & Organization Development Journal has found that dropping a couple f-bombs on the job can actually go a long way. (h/t Business Insider)

The use of expletives in the workplace helps enhance group solidarity and serves as a mechanism for stress relief, according to the study conducted by researchers at the University of East Anglia. Researchers said that the interpretation of cuss words is more relevant than the “simplistic literal meaning.” The study acknowledged, however, that not all swearing is beneficial, such as that used to bully peers.

Journalists have become especially well known for taking advantage of these benefits, albeit accidentally. Indeed, an angry reporter or news anchor swearing on camera is nothing new. Just last month, a BBC weatherman swore after tripping during his weather forecast. The incident went viral on YouTube.

Wall Street employees have also been known to tap into the cathartic benefits of letting loose with the language. But after a senior Goldman Sachs executive's email became infamous for referring to a mortgage deal as “sh**ty," Goldman banned all forms of profanity in emails and text messages from company devices. Citigroup and JPMorgan also have swearing policies, according to Forbes Magazine.

Cussing at work is not just limited to the private sector. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, a man said to have quite the potty mouth behind closed doors, delivered a profanity-laden speech to bank regulators about their failure to comply with the Obama administration's propositions to reform the financial regulatory system.

@Romansten10
Hmm... "Now" that "her" might be your opinion, but you lack the proper grammar to make any claim to your post. Shucks.

Are you nuts or what? There is absolutely nothing wrong with my grammar. Cussing only shows that people are uneducated.

For many of us this a social lesson learned in early adolescence as teenagers. The fact that it works as effectively in adulthood groups is surprising. Effing A, I'll give it a try! My bleeping boss is being a bleeping bleep in the bleep bleep...wanna go to lunch?

Stupid article. F*** you !

Now you think it's a good idea ?
02:06 AM on 03/25/2012
Just because it's your preference to NOT cuss and you have a sterling track record for not cussing, it doesn't seem right to be all self-righteous about it. The article did not say we should all cuss unless I had missed the message. It just says it relieves stress and is one way to bond; it didn't say it was the only way or the best way either. The stink of feeling all high and mighty reeks from some of the comments here.

Not sure about making friends, but when a co-worker expresses any kind of anger, especially with curse words, the office stress level definitely rises.

I work at a curse word factory... chances are, if you've ever cussed out a random drunk guy at a bar or muttered something under your breath, it came from our warehouse.

Me and the crew that I work with (great group of guys and gals, cheers to the Cursers Union #225) usually call each other "puppies" or drop words and phrases like "neato mosquito, not nice!, I've seen prettier" and "hey, that ain't keen!"

Like public schools, society is hastening to cater to the lowest common denominator.

There may be some truth to the study, but, regardless, we should always strive to maintain high standards. Good manners are always in style.

Agreed upon vocabulary is all made up. It doesn't attack or smell or denigrate on it's own.

Society, or portions of it, decide to be shocked or appalled by certain language. And the language evolves and changes constantly.

Inflection and intent mean so much more than the words themselves.

What if society didn't have any shocking words?

I am guilty of doing this in the past. But, as a result, I still had the job anyway. I ended up leaving it mainly because I did not want to deal with the egomaniac employees/employers anymore.

Those crack addicts and alcoholics are lined up to shake your hand. The cheap bar awaits! Just remember the first time you use those swear words on your new friends it's a bar brawl for you.
