Michael Bush, Chicago Bears Agree To Contract

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Michael Bush is joining the Chicago Bears, perhaps to team with Matt Forte and give the team two hard and effective runners who can alternate punishing defense.

Or maybe in a more visible role should Forte hold out after he earlier was slapped with the franchise tag.

Bush played four seasons for the Oakland Raiders, gaining 2,642 yards (4.2 yards per carry) and scoring 21 touchdowns. The powerful 245-pound back had his most productive season in 2011, setting career highs in rushes (256), yards (977), touchdowns (7), receptions (37) and yards receiving (418). He mostly was a backup to Darren McFadden but had nine starts last season when McFadden was injured.

"I was told that the rotation will be very good," Bush said in a conference call after signing a four-year deal the Chicago Tribune reported was worth $14 million, with $7 million guaranteed. "I think there are enough carries to go around."

Forte, who sprained his knee in early December and missed the final month of the season but went to the Pro Bowl, has not been able to get a long-term deal from the Bears. He was given the franchise tag, meaning he will make $7.742 million next season if there is no new contract reached.

Forte went to Twitter to express his opinion of the signing of Bush, saying he had been "disrespected."

"There's only so many times a man that has done everything he's been asked to do can be disrespected! Guess the GOOD GUYS do finish last," his post read.

Forte finished 2011 with 1,487 yards from scrimmage and 997 rushing in his fourth season. He averaged 4.9 yards per carry. He was the first Chicago running back to make it to the Pro Bowl since Neal Anderson following the 1991 season.

Bush said he can relate to how Forte feels.

"It's just one of those things where you want to be rewarded for your success. I understand, but that has nothing to do with me," he said. "My job is to come here and play ball. If he wants to hold out, I know what he's going through. I'm just going to be there doing what I'm supposed to do."

Bush said he also visited the Bengals and was planning to go to Seattle before agreeing with the Bears. Re-signing with the Raiders wasn't much of an option because there not much communication.

"I haven't heard too much from them ..." he said, adding he understands the business side of football. "I'm not upset with them."

Under new general manager Phil Emery, the Bears have been busy. They traded with the Dolphins for talented but troubled wide receiver Brandon Marshall and they signed backup quarterback Jason Campbell along with special-teams contributors Blake Costanzo and Eric Weems.

They also re-signed defensive end Israel Idonije, defensive back Tim Jennings, tight end Kellen Davis, backup quarterback Josh McCown and safety Craig Steltz.

Hell yes. The Bears are notoriously cheap, they are loathe to pay their offensive stars going back to Willie Gault in the 80's.

No wonder the Raiders can't win!! Every time they get a good player they either release them or won't pick up their franchise!! Come on Al Davis is gone , time to change the front office!!!!!!!!!

Any player up for contract and mulling the decision to "show character" or hold out now has their clear and defining answer:
The NFL is an OWNERS league. "Character" is worth zip, zilch, nada. Get that cash while you have the leverage because if you get hurt while you are demonstrating "character", the owner is going to laugh all the way to the bank while saying "Sorry about your luck".

The dude is making $7.7 Million next year and he feels "disrespected"? What a cry baby. He gets no sympathy from me, and I doubt from many of his Twitter followers. This is one reason Tebow has such a huge following...he handles EVERYTHING with class and dignity. And what the Broncos did to him was more disrepect that what the Bears showed Forte.

Sadly, you just don't get it.... And you never will if you don't get out of your head.

His life is not as small as yours. In HIS life he is not earning a competitive wage for his skill-set. Would you work for less wages than less-skilled counterparts?

It doesn't matter what the amount is, it is the PRINCIPAL of the matter. He is being underpaid continuously relative to other less-skilled employees performing the same (world class level) tasks.

It doesn't matter that the amount is big or small. He has earned the right to be paid commensurate with his skill. His employer is treating him rather impersonally and as nothing more than a usable/disposable (albeit very valuable) asset. Which is cool.
But shouldn't he be able as a usable/disposable asset try his best to maximize his very short earning potential?
Or should just he be satisfied being underpaid, but knowing he can point and laugh at the 99% like yourself?

Your last sentence is just the point. He can laugh all the way to the bank. I don't think most fans would be as upset with Forte if he would have kept his fight with management private and not gone on twitter immediately stewing with emotion. I wonder if he regrets his temper and going public?

He's got a right to be upset for the reasons you state. HOWEVER, taking that to the public via Twitter shows a lack of class. Yes, I do feel underpaid compared to my work peers, too. But I take it up with my boss in private. I don't do it publicly via Twitter. Because, most Twitter folks aren't going to feel sorry for a super-rich millionare being a cry baby in public.

Matt was 40% of the offense last year for the Bears, but with Brandon Marshall and Bush he might only be 15% of the Offense this year. They pay you for performance going forward, not what you have done in the past. Matt should have taken the offer in 2011, but he turned it down. The offseason shows that the running back position, especially for free agents have not been as lucrative as in the past. The Patriots, the 49ers, Packers and Giants have shown that the passing game and defense are what's highly valued today. Matt- Check your ego at the door. Take the $7.74 million this year or fall back on your college degree or ask to be traded. Personally, with Bush and Bell and all of the good running backs that will be available in the mid rounds of this year's draft. The Bears will be fine without him. If he keeps complaing, trade him for a starting lineman.

Good deal on Bush..... A great upgrade over Butterfingers Barber for short yardage and goal line plus he has shown he can be a starter if needed..

Forte needs to be the bigger man and be thankful he has a guy like Bush on his team.. Forte alone cannot win a Super Bowl.

Barber only had one fumble the whole season. yes, it was a crucial fumble that cost the Bears the game, but one can hardly label him a "butterfingers."

I know I was trying to find a good word that would encompass his fumble with his bad decisions in that last game but couldn't come up with one.. I mainly dislike him because he poached all Forte's touchdowns last year and Forte was one of my fantasy backs lol

I hope Forte sticks it to the Bears by negotiating w other teams. We're going to lose another good HB because of the Bears in charge.

he's good, but not great. he wants top money, but isn't a top back yet. it wouldn't be the end of the world to lose forte to another team. the bears will need the money for Cutler's next contract.

He's not a top back yet?! Lol. Everything you say after is void after opening with that outrageously incorrect statement. You aren't seeing what everyone else knows....

Forte needs to get over it and realize that we now have one of the best running back combo's in the league, if not the best. I realize he wants to get paid and he deserves it (even thought he is making almost 8 million this year), but a sprained MCL can be re-occurring and I think the Bears may be wanting to see how it will hold up this season.

Forte is guaranteed $7 million even if there is no contract reached! He needs to grow up.

He is a race horse who will be put down the moment he's deemed no longer valuable. Looking out for his future is the grown up thing to do. They have a right to use the franchise tag, and he has a right to be unhappy about it.

Forte is a good guy. Forte has done everything right. He plays in the position with one of the shortest career lifespans in the NFL and he's right there at the end of it. He needs to hold out and take care of himself.
