"Smash" will get an encore!
NBC has renewed its critically acclaimed musical drama “Smash” (Mondays, 10 p.m. ET) for a second season. Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC entertainment, made the announcement on Thurs., March 22. The show is currently NBC's No. 1 drama in the 18-49 demographic. "Smash" premiered to more than 11 million viewers and its most recent airing brought in an audience of 6.6 million.
Starring Katharine McPhee, Anjelica Huston, Megan Hilty and Debra Messing, "Smash" follows the genesis of a Broadway musical based on the life of film legend Marilyn Monroe. Before the show premiered in February 2012, series creator and executive producers Theresa Rebeck told HuffPost TV's Maggie Furlong that Season 1 of "Smash" will end with "Marilyn" going on the road.
"The first season, the plan is to take 'Marilyn' all the way to an out-of-town tryout, so it's her first really public presentation. And then the second season -- if we're lucky enough to get there -- would be 'Marilyn' comes to Broadway," she said. "How does 'Marilyn' fare in New York?"
"Smash" is the second NBC show to get a pickup for the 2012-2013 season. The musical drama joins "Grimm" on NBC's schedule for the upcoming season.
