World's Smallest Business Card? (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: 03/22/2012 1:33 pm Updated: 03/22/2012 6:46 pm

The reports of business cards' death have been greatly exaggerated. Turns out, they're just shrinking.

Studio On Fire, a Minneapolis-based hybrid design and letterpress workspace, has made what could be the smallest business card in the world. The 1- by 0.6-inch cards -- designed by WAX partnership inc. for a small-business bookkeeper -- is about the size of a thumbnail, literally, and just big enough for the tiny printed words "Bookkeeping For Small Business" on the front and name and phone number on the back.

The stock is 100 percent cotton, 220-pound paper -- about four times the thickness of a typical business card -- which gives it "presence," said Ben Levitz, a principal of Studio On Fire. "It feels like a little puck."

It doesn't actually matter so much whether the card is borderline unreadable. With customers able to easily find business contact information and details online, Levitz said he's seen an increase in "clients interested in using business cards just to make a memorable statement." He added the statement made in this particular case is that it's a small card for small business, and succeeds because it's a "simple idea simply done."

It wasn't so simple to make, however. The card was too small to be trimmed on the company's paper cutter. "There simply wasn’t anywhere to hold onto them," Studio On Fire's website explained.

Levitz doesn't know if tiny business cards will be the next big thing, but he isn't surprised that in the digital age, business cards are evolving instead of dying. "People desire to be atypical with their cards," he said. "Business cards have developed into a game of one-upmanship."

It will draw attention for it's unique size. Or the cardholder is planning to shrink his expense in the name of remodeling the size of business card! But the new size is an unique idea, no doubt.

Well, here are some thoughts: 1) Smaller ideas - You've seen the tiny Holy Bibles, right? and the message-on-a-grain-of-rice necklaces?...my son gave me one that says, "Happy Mother's Day Mom Luv U." I bet secret agents could smuggle codes in on those...2) When I was a teacher, environmental awareness was really stressed, hence the slogan, "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" - I would say that is truly reducing...whether it is a waste is a matter of opinion, according to the variety of comments I see; 3) I think someone should invent a small, put-on-a-key-chain magnifying glass for all of the tiny words printed words someone has to read - I've seen doosies on medicine bottles, I mean serioulsy, I'd say a 2 pt. font or something...Is that so legally the company has given you the warnings and contents of the meds info? This is analogous to the key at the end of a radio ad spouting legalease at the end...not that I REALLY wanted to hear it, but did I have a choice?

Considering that it's four times the thickness of a standard business card, I doubt that there is a reduction in the amount of materials being used per card. I believe that key chain magnifying glasses already exist. There are even key chains with workable tools and calculators.

Print that on a cellulose sponge, then when someone wets it, it will grow to a full size card that they could read more easily...

Wait, been done already

It'd be neat if you could have that done on gum or rice paper something edible or with another function like a flash drive. This seems like something people will lose or throw away immedately.

I worked in the printing business for over 20 years and unusual business cards are nothing new. I've seen aluminum cards with the logos cut out (rounded corners for safety) and plastic cards which had the info sandwiched between transparent layers, lenticular cards with multiple images that show as you angle the card (very cool but expensive) cards of all shapes and sizes. Even a card for I believe an architectural firm that was a little 4 page folder with a pop-up drafting board inside.

If a liberal did think of it, at least they are working or would you rather have them collect welfare?

Stupid idea all around, and I have been in the printing world my whole life and love new ideas. This is a giant fail. Your customers with poor eyesight won't see your number without a magnifying glass. And business cards are mostly exchanged at business networks or expos, this will get swallowed up by the other cards you receive.

Physically smaller business cards? Keep going, let them get smaller and smaller. When you lose them, or can't find one that dropped on the rug, or need your eyeglasses to read it, then you'll agree they're "disappearing".

If you can't scan em, or put' em in fancy cases to show how cool you are, then they're worthless.
