Binge Drinking Can Increase Pregnancy Risk For Women On Birth Control Pill

Binge Drinking The Pill

It would seem taking the birth control pill is only part of the equation for avoiding pregnancy in during college years.

The other part, judging from a recent story on Canada's Open File, is for contraceptive users to make sure they don't vomit up the pill, something which -- perhaps understandably -- significantly reduces its effectiveness.

Judging from the college students quoted in the story, it seems the combination of binge drinking, subsequent vomiting and unprotected sex could prove to be a potent baby-producing cocktail.

"I puke all the time and have sex with my boyfriend after," one student said, according to Open File.

"I don't really puke when I'm hungover, but I puke a lot when I'm drunk," another said. "And ever since I started University, I pretty much have sex every weekend when I'm drunk."

One student complained that birth-control makers should mention that vomiting increases the ineffectiveness of the pill, but, as Gawker points out, that warning is indeed listed.

From Gawker:

But, here's the thing: that disclaimer is on it. It's not huge (and how huge is huge enough? Bold-faced? 24-pt. bold-faced? 72-pt. bold-faced? Serifs?), but it's there, right in the instruction and warning pamphlet.

The women's health organization Epigee explains that "vomiting within two hours of taking the pill will require you to take a replacement pill."

The organization also notes that "if you took your pill two hours or more before you vomited, then it is unlikely that you will need a replacement pill."

I would rather die before I sleep with a woman who already threw up.

I will admit that it has been quite a while since I was a student but I don't remember pukeing my guts out to be a turn on. Watching my date do the same thing didn't do it for me either. The old adage "Alcohol strengthens the desire but weakens the ability" is still likely current.

Here's a notion: take your pill in the morning, or at noon. 'Right before I start binge drinking' just seems like a poor time to take medication.

Is this "article" for the sole purpose of feeding the trolls? Why even bother posting it when you have a false premise that you rebuke with the last sentence? Lazy and pointless.

can you really throw up your birth control pill ?

There are other methods of contraception besides the pill, such as the IUD or the nuva ring that wouldn't be affected by vomiting. It's ridiculous that the IUD is only marketed towards married women who already have children in the US, in the rest of the world the IUD is a common form of birth control for single women and/or women with no children. After insertion, it can be kept in place up to 5 years.

There is also the option of NOT drinking until you vomit, and not having sex. Contrary to what the article states, you can get a college degree without having sex (I did, although somewhat regretfully). You can also stop at one or two drinks, or not drink at all...

Any amount of Drinking, binge or not, once a year at the office holliday party, a daily alcoholic drinker or a person who does drugs for that matter and MJ smokers too! Any substance people do to make them feel different and pleasurable increases the chance for fooling around. I'm sure vomiting up the pill dosent help but I havent ever known any women who had the delima og puiking up a pill they take once a day at a specific time and I have known some hard core serious partying drinkers over the years as most of us have. Seems there is a better chance a girl gets drunk for a weekend and forgets her pill all together for a day or 2. Normal people increase their chance of getting the spins and vomiting as they get more alcogol in their systems. Serious Alcoholics actually vomit and dry as the amount of alcohol in their systems goes down and they begin to withdraw, and shake, vomit till nothing left then dry heaving. Give em 4 strong cocktails or a few beers and the sickness seems to magically disssapear untill the alcohol levels go down again. Better chance a girl gets drunk and forgets to insist on condom use. This artical was really digging deep for some kind of story. I guess all the free and 10 dollar a month birth control is worthless if we dont solve the drinking epidemic?

As a former collegiate binge drinker, I'd have to say that roughly 80% of the people I knew in college -- and I knew a lot -- would binge drink at least Thursday through Saturday. Most of the women still managed to graduate in four years with whatever degree they were working toward, which ranged from communications to engineering. It seemed that the guys had a longer go of it, up to 6 years.

Binge Drinking Can Increase Pregnancy Risk For Women On Birth Control Pill and FOR WOMEN NOT ON BIRTH CONTROL. I think I will do a study on this. Where do I apply for my grant money for the study. DUH. Just think about how stupid the average person is and the you have to realise HALF the population is dumber than that.

You do realize that abortion is an extremely difficult decision for most people, right? Most women do not take it lightly, and assuming they do is just playing into anti-abortion rhetoric. It's simply untrue that any women use it as a regular method of birth control.

I can understand drinking too much once or twice on accident (because almost everyone has) but to continue to do it knowingly is beyond idiotic. Whats the point? How is barfing and or blacking out fun? It's dangerous in so many ways for men and woman least of all an accidental pregnancy. I don't think these kids can spare the brain cells the booze is killing.

I was always under the impression that one had to have a reasonable amount of intelligence to attend University. Obviously I was wrong.

Nope, they take anybody with a pulse as long as you have a means to pay. And with all the government-backed student loans, everybody now has a means to pay.
