David Steinberg sat down to talk with Kathy Griffin on "Inside Comedy" (Thu., 11 p.m. ET on Showtime) about her comedic influences and the evolution of her career, but he discovered that it's not easy to keep her on task. Especially when celebrity names come up. In more recent years, Griffin has made quite a career out of skewering those in the pop culture spotlight.
As Steinberg pointed out, though, when she started doing this she was doing it from a point below them. In the intervening years, though, Griffin has come up quite a ways from the D-List. Steinberg said she's now more powerful than some of the people she pokes fun at.
"Not Oprah," Griffin exclaimed, before going into a monologue about how Oprah really runs this country and even selected our most recent President. "I don't know how you do it in Canada," she said to Steinberg, "But here we let Oprah pick."
Griffin talked about how her rise as a gay icon came organically from her life. She was the girl who always thought she had a chance with the gay guy, and she's just always been surrounded by gay people. Through that, though, she's also learned that they can be a much harder audience to shock.
